GLENN BECK HITS L.A. MONDAY!!!

RadioFanBoy said:
Radio Daily News is reporting that KMXE-AM 830 has picked up The Glenn Beck Show and it begings Monday from 7-9am

This makes what? The 7th format on this dog?

WHAT!!!?????

What happens to the Spanish language talk???

Are they going to all-English?

BTW KSPN now has the rights to all the USC football and basketball games (was on 1540 The Ticket last few years). The Angels games on KSPN that may conflict with USC football will be pre-empted and moved to 830 AM. After all Arte Moreno owns this station.

Note to David Eduardo: I don't know how much you know or don't know about Arte Moreno, BUT I would not sell him short on turning that station around and in time I would not be surprised to see whatever format Moreno puts on achieves the best ratings ever - not that that's saying much ;D I think KPLS made the book once or twice, maybe you remember, 'cause I'm not sure.

Not KABC ... I think I read in the OC Register that at first that was the plan...but then they changed it... Maybe part of the deal was that USC would have priority.... And since Arte Moreno owns the Angels and also KMXE it was decided to move the Halo's games to 830. I guess we'll know for sure on Sept 2nd ;)

So does KTNQ get the spanish broadcasts again?

Hopefully not.

Besides, the team owner owns the station. Apparently they are going to do the broadcasts bilingual, since they realized that Spanish-dominant Hispanics don't like baseball and, prticularly, the Angels. Absolute ratings killer.

Even the Dodgers cut the KWKW audience by at least half compared with the regular programming.

As RadioVisa, the last format, they made the book off and on. A few other times they popped up with a 0.4 or something. They did total no-show when doing catholic talk and, later, the conservative talk and the dance format.

The problem with the station is, even though it trnsmits non-direction daytime with 50 kw, it broadcasts from way out in Riverside County, and the low conductivity and mountains make it effectively directional-ize by the terrain and the site. It misses most of LA from downtown north daytime, and the 20 kw night signal only covers the OC and a tad of Southern LA County interference free at night.

It is just another partial signal, like KBLA... looks good to have 50 kw on paper, but it does not work competitively.

The thing will probably be a good promotion for the Angels, and they are smart to go towards English as incredibly few Spanish domiinant Hispanics like baseball,a nd even fewer like the Angels.

David, can you define: "Spanish-dominant Hispanics" for me?
Thanks

Spanish dominant: Speaks Spanish only or mostly
English dominant: Speaks English only or mostly.

There is no such thing as a bilingual There are only a handful of people who speak and use both langauges with 100% identical ease, comfort and vocabulary. SO nearly everyone can be put in one or the other of these groups. Arbitron puts bilingual Hispanics into English dominant.

David, I appreciate the response. I'm trying to understand why the Dodgers have had a Spanish-language radio broadcast of their games for 40+ seasons (Jaime Jarren still at it-- he's the Hispanic Vin Scully I guess :)) and the Angels for I don't know how many seasons. If it's true that "incredibly few Spanish dominant Hispanics like baseball", then I just don't understand why the stations even bother to broadcast these games in Spanish. Can you explain that? ??? OTOH Spanish-dominant Hispanics I presume would be big soccer fans... I think the station carries some soccer. BTW 40% of the Angels' active roster (10 out of 25 players) are Hispanic all born outside the USA. With Angels and Dodgers each drawing 3.4 MILLION plus every year now, I would presume that SOME Hispanics like baseball. Are they all English-dominant Hispanics??? I dunno. Were you simply referring to RADIO listeners in your statement I quoted above? Just wanna know....

On a side note, you could probably count on one hand the number of Angels and/or Dodgers games televised in Spanish each season.

BTW during lunch today I was listening to/sampling 830 KMXE and they (sounded like two guys and a gal) were talking about some boxers and how much money they were making for their next fight (around 12:50 pm). They were alternating between English and Spanish -- Spanglish. It was interesting in a way that I could understand the gist of the conversation.... BUT what's the purpose of this type of programming?

>David, I appreciate the response. I'm trying to understand why the Dodgers have had a Spanish-language radio broadcast of their games for 40+ seasons (Jaime Jarren still at it-- he's the Hispanic Vin Scully I guess :))

--> $$$. It is much easier to get advertisers for baseball than listeners. The audience on KWKW always falls, sometimes as much as 50%, in Spring and Summer.

> and the Angels for I don't know how many seasons.

--> We had the Angels on KTNQ. It was a ratings killer.

> If it's true that "incredibly few Spanish dominant Hispanics like baseball", then I just don't understand why the stations even bother to broadcast these games in Spanish. Can you explain that?

---> It is the ad revenue which for an AM is considerable. Since the Hispanic community is much younger than the general market, AM has even less use by Hispanics than by non-Hispanic whites.

> ??? OTOH Spanish-dominant Hispanics I presume would be big soccer fans...

In LA, where there are nearly no listeners from the Caribbean, soccer is the _only_ sport of interest among Spanish dominants (that is, those born outside the US).

> I think the station carries some soccer.

I think they have the LA Galaxy, but might be mistaken. The Galaxy is a US team, and of no interest. Only Mexican league and Latin American soccer is of interest.

> BTW 40% of the Angels' active roster (10 out of 25 players) are Hispanic all born outside the USA. With Angels and Dodgers each drawing 3.4 MILLION plus every year now, I would presume that SOME Hispanics like baseball.

--> Yep, secnd or third generation assimilated Hispanics who speak English. The Spanish dominants have no or limited interest. THis is mostly because there is very little baseball played in Mexico, especially the areas where the immigrants to the Southwest come from.

> Are they all English-dominant Hispanics??? I dunno. Were you simply referring to RADIO listeners in your statement I quoted above? Just wanna know....

---> Attendance and radio listening. The Spanish dominants do not have any background in baseball.

>On a side note, you could probably count on one hand the number of Angels and/or Dodgers games televised in Spanish each season.

Yep. They do have SAP, I believe.

>BTW during lunch today I was listening to/sampling 830 KMXE and they (sounded like two guys and a gal) were talking about some boxers and how much money they were making for their next fight (around 12:50 pm). ---> I have no idea who this appeals to.

AM 830 - Spanglish?? LOL!!

SRF: "They were alternating between English and Spanish -- Spanglish. It was interesting in a way that I could understand the gist of the conversation.... BUT what's the purpose of this type of programming?"

DE: "I have no idea who this appeals to."

CLASSIC!!! :D
Thanks for the responses David, I now have a better understanding... I wonder if the advertisers of Spanish language radio baseball games understand? ;) :-X

So, basically, this thread of messages has very little to do with Glenn Beck, and everything to do with Spanish language radio, and Dodgers baseball broadcasts.....okay, I get it!

The less Glenn Beck is discussed, not to mention heard, the better - for everyone.

Re: ??? HITS L.A. MONDAY!!!

Okay, I'll veer off the Beck topic.

Looks like All Access has the lowdown.

- Call letters will switch from KMXE to KLAA.

- They will pick up Spanish broadcasts of Ducks hockey for three years. Just kidding folks, it will be in English. All games will be aired live for the first time in team history, and move from its previous flagship, a station out of Mexico (XEPRS).

- English-language horse racing shows on Saturday and Sunday.

- Whiny drunken Headline News fat-head Republican wannabe on from 7-9 AM.

Thanks for the info.... KLAA (for Los Angeles Angels ... hmmmmmmmmmm I am sure the Angels broadcasts on KSPN days are numbered. Anyone know if the Angels team can break their contract with KSPN? (it runs through the 2007 season). Not surprised to hear the Ducks are gonna be on 830 (not the first time either).

Weird stuff department: In 1993, when I was OM of KKHJ and KWIZ, the Santa Ana station ran the Ducks games, all of them, in Spanish. We tried to position it as "soccer with a weapon" but there was just about zero listening... although the team paid good money to buy the time to try to increase awareness of hockey among Hispanics.

David KWIZ had two strikes against it running NHL games for a first year expansion team and to an uninterested Hispanic listening audience.

PS I always thought it was cool to have transmitter towers in the middle of a golf course! 8)
