Glenn Ordway is out at WEEI

Felger and mazz realize that they can be replaced by cbs sports radio if they have one or two bad ratings books it was sobering what happened to ordway and loBel a few years ago

Fybush column today mentioned in 2009 Ent. gave Ordway his $1M/yr, 5 yr deal and all seemed great.Months later the competition arrived and it wasn't some crappy AM signal...

>>Had WEEI quickly shifted gears to FM itself, it might have staved off “Sports Hub,” but instead Entercom held its fire and remained on the AM dial for two long years – which also, unfortunately for WEEI, turned out also to coincide with a downward slide for its bread and butter, the Red Sox.

Add to that, as Scott says, the high cost Ent. paid for the Sox deal...(and Vahey has mentioned them losing $3M/yr last yr)--Ent. had clauses in deal in case ratings, etc. couldn't be met
of course.

CBS Sports Radio will not replace anything local on the Sports Hub. Their national shows have no Boston edge to them. Like Doug Gotleib or Jim Rome would play in Boston? Are you serious? All the local guys are safe.

If you're replying to scranton, I think that he's saying that F&M realize that it doesn't take much to knock them off. Ordway and Lobel were on top a while back and now they're out of work. They weren't replaced by national shows. I still can't believe that Felger has been so successful, but he is.
If you went back a couple years and said Ordway would be unemployed, even the people who didn't like him wouldn't have believed it.

The local guys are safe from national shows, but not from other local guys.

In simple sports terms, WEEI has become the Miami Marlins with Ordway being the big salary dump.

If Ordway made one fatal blunder it was having the ratings benchmarks in his contract.

I expect the next shoe to drop when D&C return to Boston from Florida.

I don't think Holley is strong enough to be the #1 voice.

After repeatedly saying that last Friday was the last Whiner Line, Holley just announced that there will be a Whiner Line at 5:45 today. I guess they just meant it was the last one with Ordway. It doesn't take too much to confuse me, I ate a lot of lead paint when I was a kid.

I don't know why Lobel is being paired with Ordway. I don't think their impact or dismissals were similar.

F&M have more protection from being fired because they don't have the monster contracts that Glen and D&C have. I don't recall where I read this, but I think Sports Hub hosts are making less than half of their competitors at WEEI. TSH can be a lot more patient with them.

Cbs radio itself is at risk. Cbs investors consider it a"non-core" business

That's not true. CBS has stated repeatedly that radio is an integral part of their business, particularly in major markets and in markets where there are synergies with TV properties. CBS isn't leaving radio in Boston any time soon.

I believe I heard Fred allude to his contact recently (in a droll way). Suffice it to say he's going to want a bump (I'm thinking before his deal is up).

I'm not really buying into the FM explanation as to why EEI lost. It's part of it certainly--no question-- but I happen to think they would have got beat anyway.
If they had made some key moves early it probably would still be very close (with EEI only having a slight advantage).

After a recent (6 to 9 months ago) ratings period that T&R did well in, the two of them were absolutely giddy about getting a bump in their pay. I recall it was a bump up and not a bonus. They made it seem like the dollars involved were significant.

see what a unexpected vacation can do?

How? He has mentioned the internet, but I doubt he would get any traction with people who liked him.

My god. The guy who got gassed is not only right behind the plate during a telecast of the team his former employer owns radio rights to broadcast, he
a) Was there with a sponsor who is canceling
b) Was recognized on the TV Broadcast
c) Apparently was having a hullva time at the old ball game

Great week for Entercom. A guy given a 30 percent pay cut defies industry tradition and walks. A guy who got fired lives to laugh at them.

Ordway's situation should be kind of interesting. He developed a network of haters because he was the only game in town and he seemingly got lazy and let the show get stale. Generally speaking I think he's pretty well-liked in the community. He has no controversies, no Metco type incidents, and he never came across as mean-spirited or nasty. It was pretty evident that his politics were conservative, but he never pushed it.

So now what happens to his old show? If they regain #!, is it because Ordway left or Salk is really good? Or is it because Felger's act has finally run its course? I sense a lot of displeasure with F&M on other boards. Mazz has been the target for a while, but I guess that lately, Felger is accusing every team in town of skuldugery and it seems to be wearing thin.

I am not sure how much Ordway "let his show get stale." The changes to the show's format were not Ordway's decision. They were top-down. As much as some of the old co-hosts were lame, the old format of rotating co-hosts seemed to work.

I don't think gauging F&M popularity by the comments of a dozen people on a web forum is really telling you much, when the ratings continue to surge, or at least hold steady.
