I have said many times that I really can't stand much commercial talk radio. It is designed to polarize, play up differences, and demonize. These are all primal emotions....red meat to a snarling audience who want simple answers to complicated issues.
My main complaint is that most of the hosts are cynical actors who know exactly that they are playing the audience like a fiddle, yet market themselves as "concerned, looking out for you, etc etc" Like Bill O'Reilly is really all that upset about some appliance store that says "happy holidays", like he really, truly believes that the New York Times "wants to see the destruction of the United States Of America" (direct quote). He's pushing lunch-bucket buttons and some people believe that he is sincere. And on the other side of the aisle, Randy Rhodes can scream all she wants about "everyone in the Bush administration is a crook" or that "All Republicans are on the take", but I don't buy that wholesale brush either.
You will notice that this kind of WWF talk radio did not really explode until the elimination of the Equal Time Rule. With no equal time rule anymore, ANYONE can say ANYTHING and not ever get challenged. In the old days, if you said that Kerry lied about his Purple Hearts, or that Cheney has a secret cash flow from Hallaburton, they could challenge that statement and receive equal time.
I would much rather have the audience hear a station that features Rush, Stephanie, Hannity, and Shultz, instead of a 24/7 service of one point of view.
By the way, I like Al Franken. I think that he is very bright and his opinions are very well formed. Unfortunately, he is not much of a radio performer, and comes off dry and tentative. Sad, because--again--he is probably one of the smarter guys around, even though I don't always agree with him.
