Globe: Rumba debuts Thu. at noon

I'm grateful for the downloads and streaming, which is how I've been listening to prog talk for a long time anyway. I really hope that a home can be found for some of the shows... Steph, especially, even Ed Schultz, although I don't really like his show.

>>tuning in on the computer

Howie Carr has been saying "eventually there will be wifi in cars" meaning that someday you'll be able
to use an external computer, or some kind of special internet radio, that would enable you to hear
live streaming of shows you can't normally hear in your area.

that would be awesome

talk radio and politics in general...

Whether you are politically right or left - people listen to (or support, or vote for, or donate to) stations or candidates
with whom they already agree. They are "preaching to the choir"... They are not trying to change anybody's viewpoint -
but , rather, reinforce their existing point of view...

For the most part yes but some liberals have been heard as callers or guests on Carr, Ingraham, Hannity, Rush, etc. Some people may enjoy listening to a certain host for the entertainment value even if they don't agree with them but yes, most probably do agree...

by the way a post on Dem. Underground says they talked to someone at CC Boston and were told they are "too far along the process to turn-back now, but that in six months they'll "look at" perhaps putting AAR back on the lower-powered 1430 station when 1200 moves up to higher power."

the saddest part of all is that the last thing heard on this station was Elaine Boozler and Mearl Markoe doing their usual overly enthusiastic shrill talk- forcebly laughing at everything eachother said. Also, neither one fo them would allow the other to finish a sentence before interupting with another "witty barb." I was getting a headache.....it really was depressing to go out this way.
And how about the fact that they didn't take any calls from Boston? Stephanie would usually take 3 or 4 calls a day from Boston.....seems kinda cowardly, but probably not their choice.

I sat in my car at 11:53 and waited for the "flip". It was dreadful - 3 minutes of silence, some truncated commercials came through, then a foreign language that is too complex for its own good. English immersion will only help people who are stuck in a language with a Latin root that uses too many words to get a point across (much like this run on sentence). OK< sue me for attacking a language. I love all cultures, but some languages are in serious need of makeover. Spanish is one of them.

A number of issues:

1)I've been saying all along Clear Channel made a point of not promoting Air America and the Jones network.
The PSAs told us what they were thinking: drive an audience away

2)Raccoon is heartfelt about his love for Conservatism, but he lets that get in the way of the facts.
Conservatives allow plants on the air, when they do let a progressive speak it is to hit the mute button
and ridicule them. They don't play fair.

3)There is a conspiracy. Big Business is still too afraid of this format. It is not user friendly.
Rush is a user and is user friendly, thus, they like Rush, despite the fact that he seems to be
ratings-challenged in the Boston area. I suspect Rush's peak was a few years back.

4)WXKS AM did not present a good mix of Progressive talk. Stephanie became overbearing, Franken was
inept, ums and aws and uhs, Howie Carr would've probably done a Wizard of Uz except it would promote
another station.

yeah, put the internet in Car Radios, or get Sirius or XM. We just lost another station, but Clear Channel will make a bundle on something that won't compete with their other properties, and will address a community that wants a voice.

>>Three minutes of silence

You mean it wasn't The Best of Al Franken? :)

Spanish may sound complex but I've heard English is a tough language to learn, including such things as
pronunciation (tough, cough, plough, dough don't rhyme...)

>>too many words to get a point across

Though I've heard the same in English, too. Laura I. plays something called "Find the Sentence"--usually
a bit from a Pres. press conference in which a reporter (hi David Gregory) practically makes a 5 minute
speech before finally getting to the question! :)

I can't say whether or not each side allows a "plant" for their side (or the other side!) on.

Libs need to get someone hooked on Oxy Contin and put him/her on the air!

A liberal--overbearing? :) (So do conservatives, Mr. Savage...)

"Our station"--well explain to me how many conservative people are on 'BUR... :)

I'm a little gleeful yes, but this could actually help AAR/prog. talk: a more powerful station might choose one of the abandoned
shows. Would you rather hear Ed Schultz on WKOX or ...WRKO? WTKK? Steph Miller, etc.

Also I've heard a lot of the better shows (maybe more moderate, or more entertaining) might be coming out
of the Jones stable (see above), and maybe those would catch on...though yes AAR could continue with a new buyer. See, I'm not totally against having libtalk on the air--doesn't mean I'll listen to it, of course. But I couldn't get into the "molasses-dripped voice" of Al Franken and seeing this happen did kinda bring a smile to my face.

But give the people what they want: a protest against CC in Madison resulted in their station being
"saved" (put your hand on the radio, brother, and testify!) and who knows, maybe an effort here in
Boston could get libtalk back on the air (besides NPR...) To paraphrase the Beastie Boys, you gotta
fight...for your right...to hear lib talk...

Meanwhile I'll be digging Howie.

Speaking of the new Rumba, I wonder if they might want to consider getting the rights to
run the Red Sox Spanish network--maybe even become the flagship. Salem's WROL 950
had done it (with some games airing on sister station WEZE 590 when there were shows
like Irish Hit Parade on 950) but here you have two full-time Spanish stations, and putting on Ortiz y las Medias Rojas de Boston would be a natural.

I have said many times that I really can't stand much commercial talk radio. It is designed to polarize, play up differences, and demonize. These are all primal emotions....red meat to a snarling audience who want simple answers to complicated issues.

My main complaint is that most of the hosts are cynical actors who know exactly that they are playing the audience like a fiddle, yet market themselves as "concerned, looking out for you, etc etc" Like Bill O'Reilly is really all that upset about some appliance store that says "happy holidays", like he really, truly believes that the New York Times "wants to see the destruction of the United States Of America" (direct quote). He's pushing lunch-bucket buttons and some people believe that he is sincere. And on the other side of the aisle, Randy Rhodes can scream all she wants about "everyone in the Bush administration is a crook" or that "All Republicans are on the take", but I don't buy that wholesale brush either.

You will notice that this kind of WWF talk radio did not really explode until the elimination of the Equal Time Rule. With no equal time rule anymore, ANYONE can say ANYTHING and not ever get challenged. In the old days, if you said that Kerry lied about his Purple Hearts, or that Cheney has a secret cash flow from Hallaburton, they could challenge that statement and receive equal time.

I would much rather have the audience hear a station that features Rush, Stephanie, Hannity, and Shultz, instead of a 24/7 service of one point of view.

By the way, I like Al Franken. I think that he is very bright and his opinions are very well formed. Unfortunately, he is not much of a radio performer, and comes off dry and tentative. Sad, because--again--he is probably one of the smarter guys around, even though I don't always agree with him.

I don't agree with this. First off, Spanish is a quite user friendly language. And English is known as one of the toughest languages to learn, so I don't understand why you say Spanish is too complex for its own good. It's our language that is stuck in an antiquated spelling system.

Secondly, Spanish radio is about Spanish music. I like Salsa, merengue, bachata, and cumbia. 90% of the time they are sung in Spanish, just like 90% of the time opera is in Italian or German. I don't agree with the idea that providing these music forms to the market is about keeping Hispanics from learning English. It's about people, both Anglo and Hispanic, enjoying a music genre. Mike -FM might like to claim that 'we play everything'. But they don't. If I want to hear Carlos Vives, India, or Juan Luis Guerra, it's going to be on Rumba.

Imagine if a company got the rights to the Spanish language Red Sox broadcasts....and turned an FM station to a Latin format. Spanish Red Sox broadcasts would come to FM radio sooner than English broadcasts!
