GM at CC GSO Bites The Dust

At least they waited until after Christmas! ;D I think his name was Tex something, but anyway, he's gone. CC will probably bring in some unknown hatchet person, or have one of the other market GM's cover so they can save the cash. Not a great way for Tex to start the new year.

The real surprise is that Kim Pyle is back in charge of Greensboro ..... 22 years ago she said I'd never make it in this business .... Boy was she wrong. It will be interesting to see how she will manage a sinking ship.

Kim Pyle is a knowledgeable veteran with experience in turning things around. She has a rough road ahead of her and with CC Corporate as support will be difficult. BUT, if turnaround is possible, she'll do it. She's a seasoned fighter who doesn't like to lose. She's also a visionary leader with a good eye for talent.
 
Personally, I don't think they're sinking, but WTQR HAS taken on some water. Wolf has wounded them, but they're not down for the count and I think their new Morning Show is helping them mount a comeback. WMAG has had some slippage from so many competitors in the market, but they're "fundamentally strong" and the Christmas music book will give them their usual boost. The biggest problem with CC GSO has been crappy managment...typical CC BS. There's still a lot of talent in that building. It just needs leadership and direction. KP can do that.

Radio success is 2 things..... Ratings and Revenue .... something CC in Greensboro NO Longer has.

With 5 FM's only 1 (WMAG) regularly breaks into the top 5 in core demos.

From a revenue stand point the CC cluster in GSO finished the year at a loss around 5-6 million.

These 2 elements alone are sinking the ship .... add a revolving door of staff and negative press and the ship is sinking.
 
Been there, done that on two tours with Kim Pyle. Lovely lady. Can't manage worth a s--t. Kim is like those perpetual loser NBA coaches who keep getting hired. Her name is bigger than her track record. realradioplayer is correct....it's too late for that cluster. Entercom has better leadership and they have avoided the round-robin management mess of Clear Channel. Kim may enjoy the homecoming (although she will miss her beloved Razorbacks) but she'll hate what she's walking into.
 
Maybe it's time for some fresh talent at CC GSO rather than CC re treads.

Tex was brought in from their Roanoke cluster to fix GSO......Dick Harlow was brought backl to the market to fix GSO.....now Kim Pyle?

Anyone who doesn't see a sinking ship just off Hi-way 68 is not paying attention.

And how about Satterfield...he rarely gets mentioned on these posts. He has a bunch of failing brands....maybe they need a change in that position.

TQR is floundering..Buzzard is missing huge opportunites and MAG only is successful when playing xmas music.


As for TQR's new morning show, I think Roper falls into that same "NBA loser coach" analagy. Big name...but what's he done lately? We'll see.

Poor Tex was like a lamb to the slaughter....at least he hadn't sold his house in Roanoke yet.....
 
I agree with Eyewitness. Kim Pyle has no shot at fixing CC/GSO. Ain't gonna happen.

No surprise there!

People are losing jobs and you're beating them like a Pinata. Sad.

We're $8/hour board ops like you, Surf. I don't know exactly what your problem is. I haven't criticized Tex and I think that CC/GSO sucks. I can back that up in lots of ways. Just look at what The Wolf has done to TQR. What about the awful numbers the Buzzard puts up? What about their pathetic showing with 105.7? MAG continues to rock on, but there are rumors that the high-priced team members (like Flynn) may be pushed overboard (I'm against that, for the record). You see, that is called EVIDENCE. It is also a fact that CC is not looking to invest in their properties and that does NOT bode well for this cluster.

One day I hope to have the positivity and humanity you have. Until then, I will just have to rely on this little ole facts.

I think the "fresh" talent has been the biggest problem. People who don't know this market, don't know the players, etc. You can say what you want, but the GSO stations were thriving under some of the oldtimers like Dick Harlow and Kim Pyle. They've had nothing but terrible management since Morgan Bohannon was hired there. He started the downward spiral and it's only continued.
 
As much as I despise CC, I talked to a close friend of mine who formally was CC and said he was sure that Kim Pyle, if anyone , could turn the GSO CC operation around!
 
I agree...Kim Pyle is a great (re)addition. I worked there when she was GM the first time and I think she will do a great job. Although, I do agree about the talent. Buzzard in particular. I think they are trying to have an image of attitude, but sound very vanilla. Call me, Tim. I have some thoughts!!!

WGBT 94.5 bills about $75K a month ... and outside of 18-34 rarely breaks the top 5 ( or 10)... makes since though since most Hispanics in the market are 18-34.

BTW - from what I know there are a number of advertisers like McDonalds and Budweiser that have Hispanic specific ad budgets that came into play when the market exceeded 7% Hispanic popualtion. I will also say that La Preciosa has done a good job getting out into the areas where their listeners really are.

what's funny about these boards sometimes is that much of the time, the $8 an hour board ops have no idea who they're talking to....
