GMAZ Weekend Weather Forecasters

Meteorologist Pete Mangione started Friday May 10th. Introduced as the new weekend morning Forecaster. According to LinkedIn he was hired about 2 weeks ago.

I'm surprised Pete is doing GMAZ. Holly Bock seemed to work well with Kylee Cruz and Whitney Clark. Since I moved to Phoenix, overwhelming majority of AZ Family weekend Forecasters have been female. Maybe Holly likes weeknights better? Also Steven Sarabia can go back to full time reporting.
From what I've noticed Holly seems to like the remotes from different places in the mornings. Maybe having her be a weekend site reporter is where they are going with this. Just a guess.

We have to remember that Holly was hired as the weekend evening weather anchor, not for GMAZ. Steven Sarabia was hired as the weekend GMAZ weather anchor. Maybe they will now have Holly cover evening events/concerts/etc. -- as an Entertainment reporter. We'll also have to see how Pete does with reporting from events. He strikes me more as a traditional meteorologist.

Nope! 8pm Friday and Steven is filling in on weather. Apparently SIX meteorologists plus Holly is still not enough people to cover all the weather shifts. 🙂

Can someone explain exactly what Paul Horton des for 3TV? Sometimes he does the weather at noon and shows up with Jaime at 3pm to do the weather/traffic, etc. Sometimes he fills in for Sean/Royal later in the day. Oh, and he has a popular car wash for charity every year. What exactly does he do for 8 hours a day though?

A rare evening Paul Horton sighting! He did the 5/30 9PM weather. Sean McLaughlin did 10PM

In full disclosure, he did do evening weather on Memorial Day (Monday) as well...but I'm talking regular assignment. Someone in Gray management is eventually going to ask why they need 7+ weathercasters in Phoenix, where the big weather news is usually 2 or 3 strong monsoon storms per year.

Continuing...
Monday June 3 GMAZ 4:30 - 6, Kylee Cruz did the weather for Ian Schwartz, who was "in Florida." April Warnecke came in at 6. Why couldn't April start at 4:30? I forgot to see who did the weather at Noon, but Paul Horton could have covered the shift.

April needed her "beauty sleep", I suppose. Interesting that they didn't have Pete come in... Paul was on at noon on Monday 6/3.

Again, this part weekend (7/6 and 7/7), Steven subbed for Holly Bock on the weekend evening newscasts. I guess Steven is going to be the "go-to" person to fill in on weekend evenings, even though they have SEVEN people on the weather team.

This morning (7/8), Ian filled in for April. Do they intentionally let everyone go on vacation at the same time?

Just saw a weather monsoon season promo on KPHO (CBS Phoenix) after RNC coverage & it showed them plugging the fact the largest weather team & they showed all of them photographed on one screen & it was like 8 of them including Holly Bock & Gina Maravilla along with the reg. CBS5/3TV mets.

The size of the CBS5/3TV weather team is impressive, given that we live in a rather boring weather market (99.8% of the time). However, the need to have Kylie, Steven, and Tess fill in on weather is rather ridiculous. With 7 weather anchors, they should be able to fill in within the team, even if it means a longer than normal shift occasionally or giving up a day off on the weekend.

Bringing this topic back to note Pete Mangione was a great pickup for CBS5/3TV.

He files reports that go beyond normal weather information. He goes into the whats and whys of weather. You can tell he is a science geek. Pete brings another level of knowledge to the AZ Family weather team.

On Saturday July 12, Jason Berry posted on Facebook this weekend is Holly Bock is leaving weekends and moving to do "the weather weekdays* on 3-TV and CBS-5." He did not say who is replacing Holly.

Jason also did not say who Holly is replacing April Warnecke or Ian Schwartz.

*When I originally wrote this, I didn't comprehend Jason's words that I quoted: he wrote "weekdays." I took that to mean mornings. Could it mean Holly is replacing Royal Norman, Sean McLaughlin, or Paul Horton?

Interesting! Jason's comments on his FB post say that "nobody is leaving" and they're just moving people around among the shows. Either someone is getting bumped down to weekends... or maybe they're adding another weather position because they don't have enough now! 😉

I had to chuckle because someone made a comment on Jason's post that Paul Horton's family must never see him because he's "always there". We must be watching different shows because it seems to me that he works sporadically 2-3 days a week.

Well, this is certainly interesting news (err...weather). IMHO, while she seems like a nice person, Holly Bock is probably the weakest weather forecaster at Arizona's Family. My guess would be 4:30am to 6am on GMAZ or the Paul Horton noon/3pm shift. Maybe they will take this opportunity to shift Pere Mangione to weekend evenings (as pointed out above, he is a wonderful weather talent).

So, I've noticed this week that Holly has been doing wildfire updates during the evening newscasts. Has anyone seen her doing weather?
Not me. Noon weather was April on Monday/Tuesday and Pete on Wednesday/Thursday. Sean and Royal in the evenings like always. Not sure about the others.

Today was Royal at noon and Holly at 5pm.
I can confirm Royal were there at 3pm (caught a few minutes of that).

By the way, I was not impressed by Steven doing the Sunday evening forecast. He said all evening that the high was 96. A quick look at the NWS forecast page for PHX showed that it was 97 at 12:05am. So, he didn't bother to check just after midnight. I know it's a minor point, one degree, but still sloppy. The weather folks at 12 and 15 got it right.
