GMAZ

Please let Tara go on vacation PERMANENTLY! Scott and Kaley are beginning to really click and make an excellent anchor team.

formeraa,

When I first read your post I interpreted it as Tara Hitchcock was currently on vacation. Well I tuned in this morning and immediately recognized her voice on the voiceover and had to switch back to Channel 10.

You got my hopes up buddy. LOL

I don't know if anyone has seen the latest commercial for GMAZ. It starts with several views of people and scenes around the Valley and ends with Hitchcock, Pasmore, Warnecke and O'Kelley standing outdoors. Where was Gina Maravilla? I was hoping that the next time they did their imaging they would include a picture of Gina, who's on GMAZ as long/longer than the other 4.

Sorry about that. :D She was gone for a few days -- don't know if it was scheduled vacation or just the flu that was going around. Kaley and Scott were really having a lot of fun without Tara. I personally struggle with mornings in Phoenix...there's not a single newsteam that I really, really like. I do generally like GMAZ without Tara!

Yes, brain4, I have seen it several times. They run it a couple of times per half hour over on Cox Channel 14 (the AZ Newschannel). I'm guessing that it is difficult to have more than four people on the screen without looking cluttered.

I was just amazed that they would do a branding piece in this day and age. It reminds me of what we used to see back in the 80's -- "Hello Phoenix/Hello Arizona" anyone?.

Brian,

I too have seen this commercial and to me your average viewer it comes off as very dramatic. That is really the best word that comes to mind when I see it. I see it on the weekends when I'm watching GMAZWeekend.

Charlie.

Charlie --

It did get your attention, though! :D :D

Historically, these branding pieces were very dramatic or overly upbeat or over-the-top cutesy (like the 3TV "Arizona's Family" with the Charlie Chaplin-looking guy, the bouncing ball, and the kids -- see the video on YouTube).

Or just downright folksy. Gari executed it right in the 80s with Hello... and Turn To..., which turned them into the undisputed leader through the 90s in news music.

Yeah, Raymie, you're right. Hello was definitely "downright folksy"! "Makes no difference where I go...you're the best hometown I know...hello <insert area name>, hello <insert broader area name>...you and channel xx" ;D ;D

MusicFan,

I think the commercial is well done. You don't realize it's about GMAZ until the end. However, I think Gina, since she's there most of the 5 1/2 hours, should be in the clip.

I used to like the "Good Morning Arizona" opening when everyone talked about a topic and said "GMAZ." However, when they had several team members it took a while to get through all of them.

I can see it now:

1. Tara -- "Charlie Sheen said more outrageous stuff, GMAZ"
2. Scott -- "The damage in Japan continues to mount, GMAZ"
3. Kaley -- "3 Car Pileup overnight, GMAZ"
4. April -- "Weather's Hot and Dry, GMAZ"
5. Gina -- "Traffic's a mess as usual, GMAZ"
6. Javier -- "I'm live in downtown Phoenix, GMAZ"
7. Bruce -- "I'm at 59th Ave and Camelback with the latest on the car into a house, GMAZ"
8. Tess -- "I'm live at Schneff Farms, GMAZ"
9. Yetta -- "I'll have the latest gossip from Hollywood, GMAZ"

I think they would use the entire half-hour doing the intros!! :D

I've been watch Fox 10 mornings over the past months. Last week I turn to GMAZ at 4:35 AM and see Javier Soto and April Warnecke at the anchor desk. Warnecke was actually reading the news! This was in addition to doing the weather. I thought that Kaley O'Kelley was on vacation but she shows up at 5:00 with Scott Pasmore. Warnecke anchored/weathered for a couple more mornings including today 19 April.

Does O'Kelley get 30/90 minute buffer like Pasmore/Tara Hitchcock?

Maybe 3 is trying something different (I'm usually not up at 4:30am). As we've noted here, Kaley has a very long shift (4:30 - 10am) and sometimes doing the weather as well. Perhaps they're trying to give her a more reasonable schedule. Javier and April are competent enough to anchor 30 minutes worth of news and weather when hardly anyone is watching!! :D

That said, I was up at 4:30am about a month ago. Javier and Kaley were anchoring that day.

Real news isn't much on TV any longer. But if you are into comedy of errors it's much more fun to watch 10's morning show and/or the noon news.

They know how to make you laugh at the Termite Terrace.

Saw a Gina Maravilla commercial. Talks about her deep Valley roots and her traffic reports. Very nice. However I wish they still had her picture as one of the members of GMAZ,

I'm sure that she will have her day. 3 is spending a lot of money on talent for GMAZ. Before they star in commercials, they need to show that they can pull in the ratings and beat Fox 10!

Have to look at the other side of the coin too.

Been watching GMAZ for about 15 years now, both when I lived in Mesa and since I've been back in Tucson.

GMAZ FAR exceeds any of the local morning shows here in Tucson, and our household enjoys Tara and the rest of the crew, and glad the local Fox affiliate carries it.

It was obvious that when they brought in Kaley it was to groom her to replace Tara, the company that owns the station has been on the cheap ever since they grounded their chopper crews, so any chance to reduce payroll will be welcomed by them.

Isn't that why Brad and Dan and others got chopped?

Don't be so quick to chop up Tara, she and Scott carried the show when everyone else got cut out or replaced.

A little respect out there to be fair..

Hate to break it to you, Old Tucson, but Tara is just not a nice person. :-\

And, don't be so quick to think that Kaley is replacing Tara. Tara is liked by Belo ownership, and she just re-upped in December. (Unfortunately.)
And, Tara is 40, and Kaley is 37-38 or so...it's not like a much younger woman is lurking about, trying to replace an old anchor.

Sorry, but we're stuck with her for awhile!

In addition, Old Tucson, Brad and Dan had both overstayed their welcome on GMAX. For whatever personal reasons, Brad had changed from funny to bitter and sarcastic. While Dan had been around forever, his segments got very stale and dull at the end. I'm sure he drew a large salary for a contributor because his longevity, but he really wasn't contributing much.

As much as I make fun of Tara, she certainly has carved out her place on GMAZ. Unless the ratings tank, she has her fans despite often being "over the top" and telling everyone's business.
