Good cause, bad radio

Dale is definitely one of the exceptions! And he'd be out there collecting for the kids.

Unfortunately, there are too many other "volunteers" who are more interested in grabbing their own 15 minutes of fame instead of raising a few bucks to help an unfortunate child. :'(

Maybe the FCC in their infinite wisdom (?) should come up with "THE CHARITY CHANNEL!" This way...all causes...great and small...could be designated to that frequency or digital television station? ???

Listeners or viewers would then have a choice....put out the dollars for "the cause of the hour" or ignore the channel ENTIRELY! :-X

Is that what GBH is already?.. Oh that's right, they only raise money for themselves.

And Radionut, the point of this thread was to ask why radio for a good cause has to be so boring. There is no reason it has to, WEEI just seems to like it that way.

Hi Lucylu!

I might be mistaken, but charity isn't EXCLUSIVE to WGBH. NPR stations...in order to avoid selling commercial advertising...go the "pledge drive" or "let's make a donation for" route.

There ARE creative ways to raise (or solicit) money for charities of all kinds. But like so many car dealers who believe the only way they can get our attention is to scream at us-----I guess there are at least one or two charitable groups who feel the only way they can raise money is by making us ANGRY with the same tired appeals for help? :p

Good point. But have you watch a kid's show on GBH lately? If that Frosted Flakes 'sponsorship' isn't an ad, I don't know what is.

I think GBH probably gets around the commercial aspect with the disclaimer:

Promotional Consideration is provided by KELLOGGS---the home of Tony, The Tiger! ;)

Boring?....what should they have done?

Sure, i wanted to hear baseball talk, but i understand what they are doing for ONLY 2 DAYS out of the year....I can put aside my critics hats in respect for the seriousness of what they are doing.

This is a classic example of just wanting to have something to say about every topic....just like the complaining about Geffner's mouse thing...why?

Well said, It was only a two day event. I LOVE the Red Sox and listening to sports talk all summer, but It's good to hear all the stories of kids that fought cancer, and hear from the families of the kids that didn't win their fight. Going two days without hearing the regular idiot callers, and raising almost $4 million is well worth it. People who have anything negative to say about the Jimmy Fund Radiothon are the same people that bitch and moan about having to pay taxes after hitting Mega Millions.

Mule

PS: Why should you have to pay taxes on lottery winnings? Doesn't the state and the feds take a cut of all the money that comes in on ticket sales? Double dip, if you ask me. :p

Simple....because its income...just as simple as its a good thing that WEEI did what they did, and any person with a little compassion for humanity can see that
