Good job Kicks 101.5 !

Kudos to Kicks 101.5 for "tweaking" and improving their playlist! Noticed today that they are really mixing in alot of the "older" artists and songs that haven't been heard in quite a while. It sounds great...Keep it up!! :)

I noticed that today also heard some Garth, Pam Tillis, Clay Walker, Ricochet. Change is good sometime. :)

Amen,I think it's great that Kicks is adding some older music, there is nothing wrong with the new stuff but put on a classic from time to time.

From what I remember in the late 90's in passing through Atlanta, Kix had a great mix of old and new and then just stopped playing the old stuff. Great to see them going back to it.

Kicks slogan in the 90'swas today's hot new country and your all time favorites, but in 2000 when Y106 changed to Eagle all of the old songs went to 106.7.

So maybe this may help the Bull somewhat, if they can draw listeners over from Kicks who aren't so much into the old school country. Instead of "The Most Country, Guaranteed, maybe, more of Today's Country, something like that. Wasn't there a reason Eagle and the Legend were killed off?
To me, this is the Bull's biggest opportunity yet, don't blow it.

I think it's good that Kicks has added some of the older music,I don't believe they will go as far back as Eagle did,but adding in some of the 90's music is nice.

The 1990s were boom years for the country format. The music of the decade brought in a lot of rock fans who didn't like rock's shift to grunge, active rock, etc. and were tired of the same-old-same-old Stairway to Hotel Freebird on classic rock stations. Then country had one of its periodic delusions of AC grandeur (Shania Twain, Vince Gill, et al.) by the end of the decade, and that was the end of "rockin' country" for a while.

The comeback of "rockin' country" may explain why going back to 90s country is so attractive. There was a lot of good stuff back then that would work well with the stuff today.

jabba 17 I agree, there is nothing wrong with following a Taylor Swift song with Garth Brooks,it's time to let the new generation of country fans hear the people who opened the door for today's stars. The 90' was a good decade for country music,Kicks use to do the 90's nine @nine.

Good point. Bull might consider going after the younger male demos with artists like Colt Ford. All the teenage kids know who Colt Ford is - he is just one artist of a whole new catagory of country that most country stations ignore for demographic reasons.
I would love to hear a high energy CHR approach to country focusing on some of the newer artists.(Some of you may remember when Y106 first brought Bob Neil's CHR approach country format to Atlanta.) Some of Miranda Lambert's songs are down right wicked(!!!).....but radio is only playing the songs of hers which appeal to the "35 to dead" audience typical of country stations. Country is playing Taylor Swift but there are many others that the kids think have that "cool twang effect."
You can still make money with 18-34's.....but those older demo numbers are the Holy Grail for radio sales. It will be interesting to see how The Bull reacts.

If I were a betting man,I'd say no,although it is a nice thought about Rob Lee bringing back Country Gold, since it orginated on Kicks with the late Mack Berry. What Kicks is doing helps the former Eagle listensers who came over during the changes.

Who's calling the shots over at the Bull. Last I heard that their latest PD left and Lance Houston was filling that role until a new PD was hired. Has that happened?

According to Arbitron's 2011 edition of 'Radio Today' the country format ranks second with teens (it was third last year), second with adults 18-24, and #1 with males 18-24, as well as being #1 in TSL with listeners aged 12-24, and #2 in TSL with adults 18-34.

I also agree that exposing the legions of new listeners to the early nineties stars such as Garth, Clint Black, Lorrie Morgan & the rest is a superb idea.

I think a well done Americana format just might work in Atlanta.
The problem with most Americana formats I've heard is they tend to lean too much towards rock flavored bands and all up tempo cuts. There are times of the day where this is the right fit but there are also other periods where slower and more country is better.
There are Neil Young/CSNY cuts that will cross, there are Lynerd Skynerd cuts that will cross....and there are even Eric Clapton cuts that would blend well. And there is a lot of new "progressive" country music out there performed by handsome/beautiful artists wanting/waiting to be stars. If someone were to skillfully image such a format it might just go somewhere.
I have teen kids at home and they like country music just as much as the 96.7/Q100 teenybop stuff. But not the KHX or Bull stuff (- with exception to Taylor Swift.)And they would like a high energy approach with "star" DJs....and lot's of glitzy digital to augment the on-air presentation.
Bob Neil made Y106 a really exciting station to listen to - it was showbiz through and through. Even the audio was loud and in your face.....it was perfect. Scared the hell out of everyone at WKHX including the engineers!
(You have REAL competition when the engineers are so freaked they're sneaking shooters in the parking lot on breaks.......)

Kicks sounds so much better with the music shift and Macho sounds so good in the afternoon. Terrific talent and a great guy. NOW...if 106.7 can get back to the good music station it once was with good oldies and it sounds like they are making the move.
