Good Karma To Lease 880; WCBS News Programming To End

If WINS follows the lead of sister station KYW in Philly they will pick up the CBS News TOH but only broadcast them late evenings and overnights.
CBS-FM used to air the CBS TOH news overnights during the 80's and some of the 90's.

This is what was probably the final nail in WCBS' coffin... May 2024:

"Audacy News 880 WCBS slides 2.0 – 1.8 – 1.5 for what Ratings Expert Chris Huff notes is an all-time record low for the station."
Not shocking given that Audacy did that given that they have the data showing more listeners tune to WINS since they added 92.3 FM. There used to be an argument that 880 AM's audience was mainly in the New York area suburbs and 1010 WINS audience is mainly in the five boroughs but that statement was before PPM existed. At some point Audacy had data to show that suburban listeners tuned to WINS either through 1010 AM or 92.3 FM that discredited this argument.

It would be interesting to see the WINS AM vs. FM audience, but Audacy probably would not want to release those numbers.

On that note, what will happen to the CBS-FM news block weekday mornings at 5:30-5:45? I believe that was produced by the 880 news crew, right?

No reason why the WINS staff can't take on that responsibility.

Of course, I have a better (but wishful thinking) idea: Hire Anita Bonita to be CBS-FM's newsperson.

It was a straight simulcast between 5:30 and 5:45 AM.

Thanks. I had no way of knowing that.

I still would love to see Anita rehired. I knew she was meant to do news from the first time I saw her as a guest on the MSNBC incarnation of "Countdown", and I understand her last interview on WCBS was with Keith Olbermann on Thursday. (I am open to correction if I heard wrong.)

The good news for Anita is she does everything: Radio, TV, writing, hosting.

The bad news is that budgets are shrinking everywhere. My first call if I was her would be to iHeart and Total Traffic.

But after that, look outside of broadcast. Lots of digital options.

I haven't had internet since I moved to Idaho and just got around to a Wifi hotspot.

All I can say is a shocking end of an era. I'd think WCBS-AM would still be relevant to New Yorkers, but I guess not. Times 'a changin. Everybody gets their news from their PHONES NOW. And some don't even bother watching or reading the news anymore.

The irony is that I listened to Dave Ramsey on a local AM station in Yakima before I moved...and often I'd hear the PSAs from the NAB about the AM Radio in Every Car Act...and how millions would lose access to AM radio and news/sports if the bill wasn't passed. This decision to flip WCBS and a news format that has lasted GENERATIONS...may have killed the bill from passing.

No, that ship left the dock years ago, when they started carrying baseball.

You think the politicians are paying any attention whatsoever to this? 🤯

If that was it, and I think it was, Levon Putney had two nice goodbyes, before Bloomberg and then again after the final Jodi Vale traffic report.
I clocked the Levon Putney farewell at 8AM this morning, unless it was prerecorded...

That is correct. It was a somewhat emotional conversation and worth a listen.

Tracked it down and listened to it. I love how Keith tells the Lou Adler story, even though I have heard it countless times on his podcast.
