Goodbye CD 102.5 (going internet only)

New member on the board here.

I'm still getting a decent copy of WWCD's signal 60 miles away on 102.5 MHz.

Mix of classic rock / 80's "hair" band music heard with no commercials heard. Station ID also heard at the top of the hour.

If I'm not mistaken don't this station broadcast from an old AT&T Long Lines Microwave Communications tower ???

Yes it does.

I will say – the folks over at Lazo Media “La Mega 103.1 WVKO-FM” can not be happy about this move by Radio One/102.5.

In the press release, Urban One says that the station will program a "regional Mexican and tropical" in a mix aimed at Mexicans, Central and South Americans.

If that is true, La Mega has nothing to worry about. That's an "oil and water" mix...

do you even know what WVKO plays? They have the same mix and seeing how they were sold for a few million dollars it sounds like it works just fine for them

That is pretty cool that you were able to record that. I'm sure Columbus like many other cities has a bigger latino population then what is accounted for

Have you had a chance to listen yet? I actually enjoy it, but of course, I'm not the target audience. The music is, as you might expect, all over the place -- from romantic ballads, to accordion-heavy Mexican tracks, to reggaeton numbers full of heavily processed vocals. Oh, and they're using the positioner "Solo Exitos!" (That old-fashioned word again!) All I can figure is that Columbus doesn't have a dominant national origin for its Spanish-speaking population and Urban One thinks it might be able to scare up advertising from all businesses serving the different Hispanic ethnicities in the city rather than just the ones specifically catering to Mexican or Dominican or Colombian, etc.

I like it! it's a Spanish jack fm! Good for radio one for trying something new!

Per Radioinsight, it looks like CD might be going to the 92.9 translator?

Interesting but I don’t see Delmar/ICS whatever you want to call them leasing out both 1550/92.9 Delaware and 1580/92.9 Columbus to WWCD.. The issue if they only lease 1580/92.9 is 92.9’s translator in Columbus downtown only covers a small portion on the east side and if your anywhere north of I70 your likely to be picking up W225CM 92.9 out of Delaware, OH. This move would ONLY make sense if they can also lease the Delaware translator/signal.

And if they do only get 92.9 / 1580 that means they only cover a small portion of the East Side (not really their demographic area) with an FM and most would have to listen to AM 1580 and I don't think many alternative fans are going to flock to AM radio for music.

Keep in mind that they will get a royalty discount if they stream an OTA station. If they're stream-only, they pay full rate.

Oh I am aware - Also they can still sell a signal to their advertisers.. I just think being only on 1580/92.9 downtown Columbus/east side won't make them happy in the long run. The 92.9 downtown translator is pretty much non existent in most of Columbus thanks to 92.9 out of Delaware.

Yep though it's iheart meaning they are running a nexgen computer in a closet at 5th Ave... There are only a handful of local people left in Columbus on air and it's not any talent at 105.7.. Heck they can't afford to have local talent on 175kW WNCI 24/7! (cough ryan seacrest mid days)

We'll see how well they will do - I don't see CD102.5's "core" base tuning over to iHeart's attempt but this should at least net them some listeners - heck they were not doing well with the previous format on 105.7 so anything is worth a try.

Poor Rover got dropped by Rochester NY and Columbus OH the same day. Whew!

They're talking about putting Rafferty in afternoons. I'm expecting Woody will show up in morning drive.

The last few times I've listened, the music has been virtually all regional Mexican, most of it very old-fashioned sounding. So apparently the "mas variedad" referred to in the slogan on its stream player page is only "variedad" in the regional Mexican genres played and will be targeted to an older audience. I like this music even though I have no connection to Mexico through ancestry or language. It's too bad there aren't enough Spanish-dominant residents of Mexican descent in Connecticut's cities for any station to bring such a format here.

See I told ya so. Smart move. The Brew was dead in the water. It was stupid of 105.7 to dump the format the first time (Fox Sports 105.7 was an epic fail).
