Goodbye John Boy and Billy

Wow! I didn't mean it to sound like that at all, Gregg! After reading this response...I can see how you would take it that way.
Sorry..that's not what I meant.
I'm not pretending to know you...why would I do that?
Sounds like a little self-flattery to me.
First I heard of you was in Selmer? I was in Jackson at the time.
We've both come a long way, and now that I'm out, I guess that makes you the man.
I gave you some shiznit about some certain commercials several years ago, and have teased you about the irony of the name "Shut Up And Rock" show, but never claimed you lacked anything in the talent dept.
I meant the respect part. It goes without being said that if you weren't talented, you couldn't still be doing it.
Dang! Read any of my posts and see if you read anything negative about Gregg Rivers!
I personally don't know you, but I am aware of you by profession.
I've never heard anyone say a great deal negative about you...so chill, dude.
I think your Elliott guy is a jerkwad...and you think he hung the moon.
Other than that, I'm aware of no problems.
I like the old rock and roll, good times with great friends, and my family.
Sounds like we have some things in common.
And trust me...my BS tolerance level is less than most. ;D
I think we'll have a great time tomorrow night. Maybe if I can get past security and into the "meet and greet", I'll buy you and the whole band a beer.
I can afford it...I'm no longer in radio, remember? hahaha.
All joking aside...I hope to get there and shake your hand.
All's well.

Missed ya at the show there Meep! ;) And YOU missed a great show! Packed house and Jimi was awesome!

Getting back to the original topic...looks like the original poster was right. I'd been hearing rumblings of JB & B coming back to west TN, but apparently, it's been confirmed. Was checking out some websites and noticed that SL100 in Dyersburg will start carrying JB & B in Feb. Could be interesting to see how that goes...

I had heard some of those rumblings, too. I've known for years that "Maxey" was trying real hard to become a Jackson station. I just didn't figure that it would happen because JB&B is probably pretty expensive. They'll have to pay someone to ride the board about as much as they probably would pay a jock.
That just makes it an added expense. I would imagine it'll take a while to come near paying for itself-much less showing a profit.
Sounds to me like a bad move for SL-100. I don't think there was enough loyalty to JB&B in the Jackson market to make much of a difference for SL100.
Besides, even though they cranked the power a while back, it still only picks up fairly well on the Dyersburg side of Jackson.

Besides, in all honesty, have you listened to 92 in the mornings lately?
No BS, No uneccessary chatter, etc. Just an occasional liner, to-the-point news and weather, and great music. Like I said before...I hate to admit it, but the minimalism is working for me. I've heard others comment on it, too. If they kept it through a book or two, they might be surprised at the numbers.
The playlist is terriffic-the production is professional-the imaging is pretty good.
There are some on the air that front and backsell the same song, and I'm not much on having to have some type of station element between every song-but the overall sound is good.

It's great to see a station with a great signal and stick not wasting it.

The John Boy and Billy Big Show on WYNU has consistently been number one or two in the Jackson metro with Men 25-54 for the last seven years and they do well in the overall 25-54 numbers. In fact, for the last several books, JB&B was the only thing pulling numbers in the metro for WYNU.
Their show has been number one or two in the TSA as well for years, so it makes perfect sense to put them on a 50,000 regional signal. (By the way, the show is automated. There were no board ops at WYNU.)

Also, regarding "Maxey". He took his 2.5 million dollar inheritance & a case of Dr.Pepper and retired. :)

As far as the current WYNU morning show... I think they should put Gregg Rivers on. He would be perfect. (Of course he would have to get up at 2 am in order to get to the station on time)

HA! Ya know that's going to happen! Actually that's another position I'm not interested in. I'm the Production guy. I'm HAPPY with that.

So, Roger?!
Was it you that talked Dr. Pepper man into the John-Boy and Billy move?
Maybe it'll be gang-busters.
As long as everybody is into NASCAR and has some kind of connection to North Carolina..JB&B is money!

What do you think about Rick and Bubba? I hear they're coming close soon.

Yes, It was my idea to put JB&B on.

As I stated earlier, they've worked in this area for years. The North Carolina thing was never a factor at WYNU. Listeners like compelling content. It doesn't have to be local to be relevant.
Even if you don't like "redneck, NASCAR humor" you have to admit that JB&B is a well produced show.

As far as Rick and Bubba go, I'm not sure how well they'll do. I do know that they didn't do well when it was on WZDQ in Jackson a couple of years ago but I think that was because the show wasn't a good fit with the younger skewing active rock format.

Oh...I liked JB&B just fine. I think it fits a country format better than any other. The Rock wasn't bad.
I read Gregg Rivers response to an earlier JB&B post stating how highly they were related.
He seemed to say they weren't that successful. I didn't even know Arbitron did Jackson very often.
When they do, isn't it just a slam dunk for Superwolf's old station?
I'm not overly familiar with Rick and Bubba-I think it's probably a good fit for country also.
Is the format of SL-100 still considered AC or what?
Hey...best of luck there. I think Dyersburg deserves good radio...anything you can do to get it will be just great. ;D

R Vestal, where the hell did Maxey get a 2.5 million dollar inheritance?

Actually, I think it was proceeds from a lawsuit.

Turns out, the glue from his hairpiece reached his bloodstream and caused some problems.

Ha! Ha! I'm sorry. I couldn't resist.

Maxey's really okay. ;D

Well, I've been out of the loop for a while, That's what I get for minding my own business down here in Selmer..

I hope that JB&B Does great on SL... they need to be on around around here... even if I am doing a morning show and will never get to hear them...

and Meep, I've noticed not many people listen to my posts, but I sais earlier in the thread that Jb&B don't need anyone in the studio to run the boards.. it can all be done by computers...

I was the Guy at 92.3 covering the computer's behind.

Hope all you guys are doing well in the larger markets...

I'm having fun myself.

As for JB&B's "numbers", I'll bet that if 92 keeps the morning show as it's been recently, the numbers would be pretty close to the same. Don't get me wrong...I listened to Jb&B very often. Gregg (I believe)was talking about JB&B's numbers NOT being so great and not being the only thing that was listened to on 92, while Roger is touting them.

Let's not forget that 92 is a 100,000 watter on a HUGE stick with a HUGE coverage area.
If they sold strictly on "Jackson" numbers, they'd be wasting their time. It is a "regional" station that has listeners all over West Tennessee. The main draw is the MUSIC. Period. (Although I am hearing "Black Betty" pretty regularly)

I didn't know there were "Arbitron" numbers pulled very often for Jackson, but I'd have to think that 92 would ALWAYS show up pretty strong (non-ethnic-wise), if for no other reason-there is not much rock competition and the signal is big.

I know Roger is saying that SL-100 is regional, and they use terms like "Tri-State" and all, and I know he would like very much (As Maxey did) to believe that they can tap into the Jackson area market. But even after the power increase, how much of it do they reach?

WYNU IS regional.
WASL, no, at least NOT yet.

I like SL-100 fine. I don't hear it much, but I enjoy Paul Harvey when I can catch it. I think they do a fine job in Dyersburg and the surrounding area. But as far as ever being a serious factor/contender in the Jackson market...I don't know. As long as he's been around...if they can do it...Roger Vestal will probably find a way.
Obviously, part of his plan is to try to capture the JB&B loyal listeners. How many were there, and how many of them were in Jackson proper, and how many can pick up SL-100?

I don't know what the big deal about getting into Jackson really is. There are plenty of stations there struggling for listeners, and many people in Jackson-just as Dyersburg and Ripley, still list Memphis stations as the ones they listen to most often.

To agencies and to the general public, I fear there's not much difference in a Jackson station and a Dyersburg station to them. I KNOW I've never seen any Arbitron numbers for Dyersburg, so I'm not sure how Roger will measure these things.

The station in Covington, (93.5 FM) is trying to take back some Tipton/Lauderdale/Dyer County KIX listeners with a "New Country" format to go head-to-head with KIX. Bill Thomas has the LMA and has sunk some cash into the project. They are "Highway 51 Country, 93.5" now, and I don't really know how they'll measure their success. They aren't after the Memphis KIX listeners, they are trying to get the country listeners from Munford/Atoka north to Dyer County (especially along the HWY 51 corridor) that listen to Kix.

I don't know how that's going to work either, but both of these will be fun to watch.
As always...the key will be "Live and Local" (except for morning shows, I guess)
Good luck guys, have fun doing it.

John Boy and Billy have always done well in the TSA (even better than they did in Jackson metro). I'm hoping the listeners that made them #1 or #2 in Dyer, Gibson, Obion, Lake, Crockett etc. will tune in to them now that they're on WASL. So far we've had a number of new listeners calling to thank us for putting JB&B on (several from Jackson).
I hope to increase our listenership in Jackson but my primary focus is to continue to grow the numbers in the TSA.

And I still think the Gregg Rivers SHUT UP and ROCK show should be on in the mornings on WYNU. :)

LOL It can be! ("The Shut Up and Rock Show" in the morning I mean) Only "Gregg Rivers" wouldn't be there! In fact, I may ask the new morning team to consider calling it that! :D Hey Roger ole buddy! I miss ya man! Love to Alley & Miss Vicky!

TSL is what the old big signalled AMs used to tout when an FM competitor was killing them in the metro. "Yea, but you should see how we play in the outlying counties"!!

After a few months, just wondering how JB & B are doing on SL-100. Does the show gel with the rest of the format during the day.

Just wondering.
