Goodbye KCDX

As has been noted in another thread, it appears that KCDX is using their new transmitter site southeast of Florence. Unfortunately, their new antenna pattern has totally erased any coverage they had into Phoenix. Before, KCDX could be heard with a good radio all the way into Phoenix and was quite clear on a regular car radio throughout the east valley. Now, they appear to be non-existent in the east valley. From their new predicted antenna pattern (http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KCDX&service=FM&status=C&hours=U), it looks as if they have better coverage into Tucson than Phoenix.

It's kinda sad because KCDX was a unique radio station that played deep classic rock hits 24/7. Plus without the commercials, it was like a classic rock IPOD.

Phoenix radio listeners have really taken it on the chin recently with the departure of alternative music and now KCDX. If it weren't for the Lumberyard and their wacky reverse Lamptimer, what would we do? ;D

On Saturday night I went from Tucson to Phoenix and couldn't hear KCDX anywhere along the route. They cannot be heard in Tucson. Very likely the station is completely off the air at the present time.

For many years the real purpose of KCDX has been to tie up the channels around 103.1 to prevent anyone from using that part of the dial in Tucson. I believe that the game plan was that when the Tuckers were ready to move in a station (most likely from the east), KCDX would get out of the way and move closer to Phoenix. After that, both stations would be sold at a huge capital gain.

When I'm in the car and it goes off-air, I go to their website and stream it from my phone.
Usually sounds better from that than from their crappy signal! :p

I was visiting Phoenix last week and was very disapointed when I couldn't pick up KCDX in my rental car. It came in very weak even in Mesa and Tempe. Too bad.

I'll still listen to the stream. Great station.

The station is also very weak in Casa Grande where it should be really strong. I wonder if they are operating with less power?

Not audible in NW Tucson - at least as of Friday.

Wonder if it's like KRDX's power supply situation down in Vail - a hybrid of solar & wind power. :p

It's back as of Suinday March 18, 2012. Signal is about the same as it has been in the past.

I'm hearing interference from possibly another station where KCDX usually comes in clean. I've also noticed that adjacent-channel "splatter" from KNIX can be heard as far up as 103.3 on my car radio (and I'm not even close enough to receive signal overload from South Mountain). I'm just guessing, but the exciter in KNIX's transmitter possibly blew a cap and the engineers have yet to notice (or no one has complained).

Looks like KCDX might be back to where they once were in terms of power. I can pick them up easily in the Central/Camelback area. If this stays like this, they might get their preset back in the car.

They've been back to their old selves for about a month. Strong all over the southeast valley, but fading a bit as I drive further west into Ahwatukee.
