Doc, I'm a million years older than you but my dad had a base and mobile units too and we were required to have a license. I even still remember the number. We used them in the company cars to communicate because this was before cell phones. We were supposed to start the conversation with "This is KOR2222 base calling KOR2222 mobile 1". Things sure did change shortly after that. "How 'bout ya" was pretty much it.
