Goodbye Progressive Talk msg at wavz.com

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

Isn't that a return to sports on that frequency? Were't they ESPN Radio before Air America?

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

Hmm, I wonder if there's going to be a bunch of protests and whatnot like they had in Madison when they tried to flip to sports, hey I know, just tell Stephanie Miller, that'll get the whole thing going.

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

It may have worked in Madison and they're trying it in Boston..... but I think when people protest a format change like they are trying to do in Boston, they just need to get a life.

One of the biggest reasons for the change in Bosotn is the lack of advertiser support. Where were these people, their businesses and friends when the format was around? Support it when it's here, instead of bitching when it's gone, thinking you're owed something.

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

Website: it is indeed going up bit by bit (no mention of calls yet but note the "New Haven Weather" bit.

As for CCR Boston's stewardship of Prog. Talk:
--signals? Probably not the best but during the day at least 1200 and 1430 do half decently

--promotion? A few billboards and taxi-tops; since ClearChannel does billboards I thought they'd do more.
BUT those who are saying "we never knew the stations were on"--well, the Globe and Herald both did
many articles on WXKS/WKOX (the Globe fawned over how great AAR was) when it got on the air and at several points later on (like when Franken and Miller did remote shows from Boston). Ch 4 aired a piece about the
station(s) as well. And if you were a "progressive", you HAD to know about the stations if you used the Net
or maybe you heard about it from word of mouth

--Admittely the local content wasn't there and you can blame CC for that: late in the game, a Sunday
afternoon talk host, Jeff Santos, was hired, but that was it. There was no daily local host. Even
conservative talker WTTT (weak signal, non-existent ratings) had a daily talk host for awhile (Don
Feder, I believe). They couldn't hire one local host--only had to rely on Franken, Schultz, etc.
Even the prog talk stations in Western MA and Brattleboro have a local host. Local is important!

--politics: The entire MA congressional delegation is Democratic, as are 95 per cent of the Legislature,
Gov., Lt Gov, Treasurer, Auditor, Secy of the Commonwealth, Atty Gen. etc. You can't ask for a more
"blue" state. And yet they get the miniscule ratings they did in such an area? (One possibility:
the powerful WBUR's news and talk shows may have drained them of possible listeners)

CC might be liable for some of the blame, but the listeners ultimately chose to not listen (...unless
it's some kind of right-wing plot to keep ratings diaries away from liberal homes! :) )

>> lack of advertiser support.

That too, both in terms of local and national businesses. Low ratings would make some advertisers
think twice about spending money there. Also:

"(AIR AMERICA HOST): So yes, WalMart is very bad for America...it's all a right-wing plot! OK, we'll
be right back after these...er...public service announcements..." :)

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

Didn't they do poor at 1300 The Zone before so why go back to sports as ESPN Radio? Plus New Haven can pick up WFAN 660 out of New York City.

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

I guess the switch will happen with the Super Bowl. Jerry Kristafer on WELI this morning said the Super Bowl will be on "WAVZ 1300".

Looks like they can't say ESPN Radio 1300 yet. The station's new logo was on espnradio1300.com earlier this week but it's gone now. The title at the top of the web page still says "ESPN Radio 1300AM :: New Haven's Sports Leader".

WFAN comes in very strong in New Haven and way beyond. They make a respectable showing in the books too.

This is the only thing at wavz.com today (Saturday)....

Thanks to each and every one of you for being such loyal on-air/on-line listeners to the VOICE Progressive Talk Radio 1300 (theVOICE1300.com).

Effective Monday, February 5th, 2007, WAVZ-AM's program format will switch to sports as ESPN Radio 1300 (espnradio1300.com).

You're also invited to tune in to News/Talk960WELI (960WELI.com) for Local New Haven News, Traffic, Weather, & Sports... plus local information & coverage of events in your community on the News/Talk960WELI Morning Show with Jerry Kristafer, weekdays from 5:30-9 a.m.

Again thank you for your support of the VOICE Progressive Talk Radio 1300."

Fybush had mentioned it last Monday and a working version of the ESPN 1300 site started to show up...At least CC posted a goodbye message. On the WKOX/WXKS site, it just changed to Spanish on Thu 12/21/06 at
noon (and the new site for "Rumba 1200" quickly took its place) with no adv warning other than a newspaper
mention (usually buried in the biz section) and messageboards like this.

Did they mention how "local" the "Local New Haven News" is? :)
Guess that's another story....lol

Re: Fybush: WAVZ to sports?

ESPN Radio 1300 signed on at 4 PM yesterday, presumably with the Super Bowl broadcast from CBS/Westwood One.

It would make sense for 1300 to pick up the Red Sox. New Haven is firmly in Red Sox Nation but the Elm City isn't inclined to tune to 1080 to hear the Olde Towne Team. Plus the Evil Empire flagship WCBS-880 can be easily heard in New Haven.
