...Got Talent? - Does ANYONE in Seattle?

Shark said:
KISW in the '80s (pre-KXRX split) used to promote Beau Roberts as "Seattle's Youngest DJ" even though he sounded like he'd been sucking down a couple of packs a day for 10+ years. I'm not sure how old he really was at the time but my guess is that it was some sort of inside joke.

I remember listening to Beau Roberts one night long ago when he was on KNBQ 97 FM when he said on air something like, "I'm down to my last cigarette folks".

I forgot what he said next but Beau Roberts made the fact that he smoked known on air.

Unfortunately many of you on air talent smoke(ed) and that is why many of the greats are already gone, and some will be, "way too soon." Bottom line...snuff the habit if you possibly can! As an ex-smoker easier said then done I know, but please try...

Preaching done!

"But to say that Monti is among top talent in Seattle TAKES THE CAKE. I do listen a fair bit to MOViN'... my kids like the upbeat sound and I do admit to enjoying hearing some of those songs from my younger years myself now & again. But Monti's stilted delivery is all but unlistenable and she has NEVER YET had anything interesting nor entertaining to say. She fits the station well for the backfill announcer approach that they are clearly taking, but she is anything BUT "top talent in Seattle." Sorry. And while I've got my rant-and-rave-hat on, the morning guy over there is an embarassment too. "

Nice rant and rave on KQMV. Always good to hear somebody trash a morning "show" that is only a few months old. I'd like to hear the reasoning behind the new guy being an "embarassment," considering that you went to long lengths to berate Monti. However, I do agree for the most part. It seems like the few females on that station all sound a little too much alike; not a lot of variety there. I love the music, but I would love to hear something amusing and attention-grabbing from Monti once in a while. It seems to be an endless rotation of traffic and promos.

Paul (his real name) is also BLIND in one eye and has to read live copy right up to his face -
-everyone at the Q back then (80's) WAS INDEED a smoker!

Here's a VERY RARE :13 KGRG-FM Jingle - that Beau created at the Q studios for the college station back in 1982:

(**RIGHT-CLICK ONLY to "Save Target As")

That 'ripping' sound effect in there was someone's 'coat zipper' they used....

I'd have to agree that Movin's morning show blows and no amount of time is going to fix that. Isn't Monty the ONLY girl on the station?

Beau definitely was a smoker. And he also had a valid driver's license until he had a couple of accidents in his POS brown Toyota. But as for everyone at the Q being a smoker? I don't recall ever seeing Crazy Steve Randall smoking. Gary Bryan, maybe very occasionally. When Ichabod came aboard, no...never did he smoke. Nor do I recall Mark Pierce inhaling tobacco products. And I certainly didn't indulge. Perhaps before I was there or after I departed.

I love the smoking in radio! Probably the ONE profession is which you should take care of your voice. Alas, the stress makes you hit the nic.

Would you even call the Movin AM guy a 'show'? Id say its much more of a 'jock shift' than anything else. Than again, that seems like the whole stations aproach.

FYI....best talent in Seattle is Lazlo! I was on to him from back in his KC days. Amazing talent hands down. Although I think he may benefit from not being the PD also, he could become sharper if a 3rd party was there to focus him. I swear I heard a 7 minute break the other day!

Steve Randall DID smoke - 'CIGARS' - and IN the studio during his afternoon shift

Does anyone have a 'CRAAAZY STEVE, SUUUPER-STAR' jingle around?

Wow! It's funny how the mind blurs memories over the years. Now that you bring it up, I do remember Steve and his cigars. I don't recall him fogging up the studio..perhaps since I preceded him on the air. And I would imagine the red "sound-proofing" shag carpeting really grabbed the smoke fumes.

LBB, no...unfortunately I lost track of Mark many years ago as well. What a terrific guy. And he always sounded great on the air. He married Gayle from the station. Another outstanding person, but I believe they broke up a long time ago. Perhaps if you emailed Ich at KMPS, maybe he knows Mark's whereabouts.

Steve Randall Update:

'Crazy Steve' Randall lives in California and has his own audio studio. He does voice imaging and voice overs' for radio and TV commercials.
He no longer smokes cigars.....he also retired Crazy Steve due to "health related" issues.

I think they have a weekend girl and of course the morning show "producer"...

You know what cracks me up.. all you dorks were bitching about MOViN having no talent... when it was just Brad and Tasia... well it sounded better with no talent.. now you whine because of the talent.. geez, obviously nobody is much better or you'd be in Monti's place right now, wouldn't you?!?

On the morning show for MOViN.. one of 2 things needs to happen..scrap it and pump the more music mornings.. put traffic and wx in and that's it... or do a full blown am show.. hell, the syndicated morning show Kidd Kraddick would fit nicely on MOViN!

Pretty interesting comments on the whole talent question, but I can tell you Mark Pierce in Tacoma with his lovely wife Gayle. He has been battling various illness' and I'm sure everyone's well wishes would do a world of good. He is a great guy, one of kind!
