GPB Radio expands reach into Atlanta area

WJSP-FM 88.1 has just filed a license to cover for an big upgrade to its signal from class C1 to class C. I guess it will be two weeks before we know how much more of the Atlanta market will get a signal.

Hmmm... I had thought they had already done that. About six months ago I noticed reception on the west side of I-285. I even occasionally got an HD lock. If the upgrade has not happened, then I really look forward to it. It would be nice to have an alternative to WABE.

They're keeping the same site, but adding another 35m of height and a full 100k of power. Nulls to the east, west, and southwest. Looks like they will get all of Cobb, Fulton, and DeKalb, and parts of Gwinnett.

I don't hear any difference. Have they lit up the new antenna yet?

What is exactly wrong with WABE? I personally prefer them over GPB radio considering we all live in Metro Atlanta.

WABE is owned by the Atlanta Board of Education (hence the call letters), and is not owned by nor an affiliate of GPB. Compare with the relationship between WPBA Channel 30 and WGTV Channel 8. Both are PBS but WPBA is owned by ABE and WGTV by GPB.

I still don't see the issue. I live in here in Atlanta and would like to hear the local issues from an informed perspective.

It's nice to have a choice - even in public radio. Unless things have changed, WABE and GPB have different pledge weeks which means you can get live programs like A Prairie Home Companion on one while operators are standing by on the other.

I agree with trusty. I just want a choice. Sometimes I am not interested in classical music and the other station may have some other talk programming that I might like. Also, GPB has some Georgia produced programming that is not on WABE.

Both organizations (Atlanta Board of Education & GPB) have an Atlanta TV outlet, but GPB is virtually absent from metro Atlanta. Is there a historical reason for that? Was there any legislative pressure for it to be that way? Even with a power increase at Warm Springs that looks like it is going to be less than solid coverage. I doubt there is going to be significant coverage of the northern and northeast segments of Atlanta Metro out of the Warm Springs transmitter. Why is there no significant GPB radio presence in maybe Gwinnet or Gainesville or in Dawson/Lumpkin county that would cover the north and northeast side of Metro Atlanta?

Trusty- Does Warm Springs carry basically the same content that WNGU carries out of Dahlonega?

GPB Radio did not exist until the early 1980s. The GPB television network made a move on several non-comm licenses that were held by universities. They tried to get Georgia Tech's license and the Georgia State license. There was major alumni push back. I was managing the small FM station at Southern Tech (now Southern Polytech). I got calls from several student managers of other Georgia college stations to organize a push back to GPB's move to get the licenses. Technically, all of the college licenses are held by the State of Georgia because the Board of Regents is part of the state. Anyway, between applying for new licenses and buying some around the state they created the network. Because of the bad way they handled the colleges, there was never a deal made for an Atlanta stick.

Yes, WNGU and WJSP carry essentially the same schedule. A couple of the GPB stations break off for local news breaks or other programs, but I don't think WNGU is one of them. The one that differs the most is WUGA in Athens. Unless it has changed in the last few years, WJSP runs the network schedule unaltered. It's probably the closest thing to a flagship.

About 7 or 8 years ago, GPB tried to get the FCC to grant a waiver allowing a booster in the Atlanta area on 88.1 (boosters normally have to be located within the 60 dbu contour), but it was denied. Unless someone wants to sell, GPB is essentially shut out of most of Atlanta. Maybe an HD subchannel/tall translator might be an option.
