Whenever discussions turn to requests, many DJ's report that they are often innundated by joke or gag requests for really unpopular songs. After all, anyone can call in and request a song. Requesting a really lame song is seen by some listeners as a fun prank to play on a disc jockey.
Just last Thursday, three different guys from my office phoned the station that's playing Christmas music that a fourth guy had put on the office radio. In the office, the standard practice is that the first guy to arrive in the morning puts on a pot of coffee and gets to pick the radio station. The guy who arrived first on Thursday picked the Christmas music station, but he hates that Dominic the Donkey song. So, all the other three guys all called in to request "Dominic the Donkey". As soon as it started playing, we got to switch the radio over to WDVE.
The rest of us in the office all agree that when it gets close to Christmas, then it's time for Christmas music at the office. We regard "close to Christmas" as the week before December 25th.
That anecdote is a true story. I'm inclined to think that Christmas requests for novelty songs like Hippo or Dominic are right up there with drunks yelling "Play Freebird" at every concert they attend.
