Grandma is NOT getting run over by a reindeer on 3WS

Whenever discussions turn to requests, many DJ's report that they are often innundated by joke or gag requests for really unpopular songs. After all, anyone can call in and request a song. Requesting a really lame song is seen by some listeners as a fun prank to play on a disc jockey.

Just last Thursday, three different guys from my office phoned the station that's playing Christmas music that a fourth guy had put on the office radio. In the office, the standard practice is that the first guy to arrive in the morning puts on a pot of coffee and gets to pick the radio station. The guy who arrived first on Thursday picked the Christmas music station, but he hates that Dominic the Donkey song. So, all the other three guys all called in to request "Dominic the Donkey". As soon as it started playing, we got to switch the radio over to WDVE.

The rest of us in the office all agree that when it gets close to Christmas, then it's time for Christmas music at the office. We regard "close to Christmas" as the week before December 25th.

That anecdote is a true story. I'm inclined to think that Christmas requests for novelty songs like Hippo or Dominic are right up there with drunks yelling "Play Freebird" at every concert they attend.

Can someone tell me how Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne" is considered a Christmas song? It's about two unhappy people, going through a mid-life crisis, drinking beer in a Saab parked outside a liquor store – on a night which just happens to be Christmas Eve. In reality, it is promoting open containers of alcohol and driving messed up (impairment begins with the first drink) during the holiday season. Oh well, I’ll just turn to make my way back home before the snow turns into rain.

Personal preference here, but I think today is an OK day to start. I call it the "12 days of Christmas" (yes, i know the song meant the 12 days AFTER Xmas).

I do most (all?) of my shopping between now and Dec. 24, so give me some Xmas tunes.

However, as for a 24-hour format--wait until Friday, Dec. 23 at 4pm, thanks.

Oh man, I totally forgot about "Dear Mr. Jesus"!! I haven't heard that one since my CHR days in the 80's! ....can't say that I've missed it...(LOL)

Hearing "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" is much better than having to hear "Christmas Shoes"!

That sounds like a choice between being beaten around the head and neck with your choice of a baseball bat or a hockey stick. Neither one is very pleasant.

"Christmas Shoes" blows, but what's your point? If they play one horrendous song, they should play them all?
