Great Intros that really "grab" you

I got this idea from another thread a while back, when talking about Todd Rundgren's "I saw the light". I loved the intro to that song right away, the first time I ever heard it. Are there some songs that you like the intro to as much, or possibly more than the rest of the song? For me, there's certain songs that just hooked me in the first few seconds that I never get tired of hearing.

Some that come to my mind right away...

"Baba O'riley" by The Who. IMO, the intro makes the song, and sets the tone for the rest of the entire LP. I always have to turn it up when this song begins!

A real obvious one: "Smoke on the Water" - who on earth doesn't know the opening riff? Love the intro to "Woman from Tokyo" just as much pr more that that one.

"In a gadda da vida", has to be in that category. And then there's the epic beginning to "I'm Your Captain" - Grand Funk (LP version intro, not the short 45 version)

I'm sure I'll think of others, but those are some of my favorites. A great intro doesn't have to be long, it just has to speak to you. It doesn't have to be an epic rock song, some one-hit wonders can fall into this category too. I really like the intros to "My Baby Loves Lovin'" (White Plains), "How Do You Do" (Mouth & McNeal), "Silverbird" (Mark Lindsay), "Ride Captain Ride" (Blues Image) and many others. It always irritated me when the DJ's talked over the beginning of these songs, since I wanted to hear the intros!

"Sweet Home Alabama"
"Bette Davis Eyes"
"At The Hop"
"Sea Cruise"
"In The Mood"
"Sing Sing Sing"
"Classical Gas"
"25 or 6 to 4"
"Born To Be Wild"
"California Girls"
"Clap For The Wolfman"
"Come Sail Away"
"Don't Fear The Reaper"
"Don't Stop Believing"
"Go All The Way"
"Hawaii Five-O"
"House Of The Rising Sun"
"It Don't Come Easy"
"Layla"
"Low Rider"
"Shambala"
"Never My Love"
"Red Rubber Ball"
"The Breakup Song"
"Third Time Lucky"
"Time After Time"
"Hey Little Girl"

I've heard all of these songs probably 3,500 times apiece and I still crank it from the first notes of the intro:
One of These Nights - Eagles
Go All The Way - Raspberries
Backstabbers - O'Jays

Go All The Way...very high on my list of great rockers! What an awesome song. God, I miss the Raspberries ;D

I know exactly what you mean, I love to crank it up when one of these begins - I might be too old for "loud" music, and I already have Tinitus, but I can't help myself when one of the songs I love come on (or I play it from a disc or MP3). Just like you, there's certain songs I never get tired of hearing, even over and over. But it's even sweeter when the intro blows you away. It's hard to choose but if I had to choose just one song from my list that I just have to "blast", it would be Woman From Tokyo - Deep Purple. Baba O'riley is a very close second.

Of course, who can forget the great long intro to "Jet Airliner"? I hate that they chopped the intro down to a few seconds on the radio, even today many rock stations won't play the long version. Most of them cut out all of "Threshold" off the beginning anyway, as well.

"Dancing in the Street," Martha & Vandellas
"Reflections", Diana Ross & Supremes

I Wanna Be With You - Raspberries

Also, "The Message" by Cymande (1973) & "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey (1972)

I've got lots of intros to that grab me, and I'm with the person who listed "How Do You Do" by Mouth and MacNeal.

"I'm Not My Brother's Keeper" - Flaming Ember...A mysterious beginning
"I Saw Her Standing There" - The Beatles
"Mississippi Mama" - Owen B. (Peaked at #97, but played a fair amount on radio in my neck of the woods)
"(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - Rolling Stones. Another classic riff.

Many, many more.

There's a reason for that. The version with the extended intro (the album version from Book of Dreams) is the version with the line "funky shit goin' down in the city," so most radio stations simply can't, or won't, play that version. The 45 edit version with "Threshold" at the beginning of it came from their '74-'78 Greatest Hits album, and that one seems, to me, anyway, to be the version that most stations play nowadays. If they play the 45 single version without "Threshold," then it is probably because they are a classic hits station, not a classic rock station.

I can remember some stations playing the "funky shit" version years ago, but I don't recall hearing it lately. I wonder why they were able to play it back then and not today? Has the FCC cracked down on this? I remember being shocked the first time I heard the "giving head" line in "Walk on the wild side" and that was back in what, 1972? You'd think things have progressed since then...maybe not. ;D

I would have to say Smooth Criminal by Micheal Jackson, that intro makes my heart race! No radio station ever plays the intro, except last year when Jay Fox was doing Saturday Night Dance Fever at the Iron Cactus North on 98.9 in Austin.

i would respectfully submit 2

That has been my experience, too. I can only surmise that the reason why we don't hear it anymore is because we now live in a politically correct, post "wardrobe malfunction" world. If the FCC is cracking down on it for any reason, that might be why. I don't particularly like living in a "nanny state," myself. But they didn't ask me. ::)

I just heard that version of Jet Airliner yesterday but they custom edited it, they did a needle scratch sound over shi.

WLS used to play their own custom edit of the album version, with the "funky kicks" flown in from the single edit. That makes more sense than some ridiculous "needle scratch" over an obscenity. ::) Not sure why they would actually want to draw MORE attention to an obscenity. ::)

"Sausalito Summer Night"-Diesel (ignore my spelling, folks!)

Oh yes!

[I believe Sausalito is spelled right, but I think it reads "Summernight" (one word).]
