WOw. Another great. Too bad the dorks running radio have silenced such gems.

Never heard of it. Was it just some "local hit" somewhere? Don't blame the "dorks" for not playing something that was never even a hit back in the day.

It made the Top 10 in Chicago. WRLL had it on their playlist.

Link Wray, Duane Eddie, and the Ventures are probably my top picks as for rock 'n' roll instrumentals. It's a shame you don't hear much of these... and as for a lot of the posts under this topic, I don't think I've heard them at all!

KOOL, that's because modern day oldie programmers can not or will not take that leap of faith and play something that has not been auditorium tested to death. Of course these songs will never be tested because the P.D's and consultants only test what they think is safe in the first place. I speak from experience.
I mentioned a mid charted instrumental to an Oldies P D for a major chain, who said "man, there's only one safe instrumental and that is Walk Dont Run by THE VENTURI'S." YES that is what he said.
It's really difficult for a 30 year old to pick music that is older than they are.

P.S. I didn't even correct him on the artist, it would not have mattered.

At the risk of talking about satellite radio on this board, let me say that XM radio's Channel 6 plays this kind of music for an hour (commercial free) every Saturday at 11:00 p.m. E.T.

I hate to have to say it Fonz, but good oldies are where you can find them. I have made a life out of radio since 1963, but I got XM just for the oldies they do.

Underwater by The Frogmen was the theme song of Frank X. Feller on WIBG AM&FM 99/94.1 Philadelphia. Folk in the Delaware Valley to the Jersey Shore are certainly familiar with it. Wibbage radio was a monster at the time with no major competitor, only 1kw AM rimshots in the suburbs.

WOW I remember that was his theme song!! Another SUPER theme song was Hy Lit's "Night With Daddy G" which really was also the backing music to Gary US Bonds' "Quarter to Three". Yeh I lived in Central New Jersey (New Brunswick area) growing up and I loved WIBG tho' its signal was not the best in Franklin Township (Somerset) and of course at night bye bye. Thank God they had WIBG-FM which I DID get most of the time!

Here are a few more I have not seen mentioned yet:

Al Hirt - Java
Al Hirt - Cotton Candy
Commodores - Machine Gun
Martin Denny - Quiet Village
Electric Indian - Keem-O-Sabe

Morris Stoltoff- Moonglow/Theme from Picnic (wow! WHAT SOUND!)
Nelson Riddle -Route 66 Theme
Perez Prado - Patricia (1958)

A couple more "commercial" instrumentals:

Billy Joe and the Checkmates - Percolator Twist
T-Bones - No Matter What Shape (You're stomach's in)
Brass Ring - Dis-Advantages of You

Now - what TV commercials are they from?

I stand corrected: Maxwell House, Alka Seltzer, Benson and Hedges One Hundreds

The T-Bones became Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds, right? Now what was the song we did the "Teaberry Shuffle" to?

Speaking of Herb Alpert, what is the title of the instrumental that was used on the Saturday Night Live bit with Peyton Manning as a basketball player. The teams' coach played a cassette of the song that his coach used to inspire him. My wife says it was the theme from Casino Royale. Anyone know for sure?

From Saturday Night Live. I can verify that it WAS the Theme from Casino Royale, the Peter Sellars movie.

I love opening and closing almost every one of my "Relics & Rarities" shows with some great obscure instrumental from the late 50's thru mid 60's. Go to http://www.davetherave.com and then go to audio tab and/or setlists. Simply listen to the first and last song of every show and you will hear/see some very cool instrumentals!

Nothing like one of those great instrumentals to set the tone of the show! For example...anyone remember "Mad Gass" by the Royal Teens? Just one example of a great unknown instrumental!

Dave the Rave

Just realized that my closing instrumental for every show is on the archived audio, but in most/all cases, only the opening instrumental is listed on the setlists.

Dave the Rave

And some real great instrumental treasures too that Dave plays(amongst others)---tune in for sure, a great fun show!!

Dave "Baby" Cortez played (my favorite) a Hammond Organ to do Rinky Dink.

Dave Brubeck made the top 40 chart with Take 5, a Jazz classic in 5/4 time. A Catholic, Brubeck also composed "Sing of the Lords Goodness" to the same beat as Take 5. The song graces many Catholic hymnals.
