Apparently, having vocals on an "instrumental" doesn't disqualify it from being considered an "instrumental." "Soulfinger" has been mentioned here, and I remember an oldies DJ playing "Tequila," and saying something to the effect that the shouted "Tequila!" didn't disqualify it from being an instrumental.
I also remember "TSOP" by MFSB, and the Three Degrees, with their "doot doot dootley doo, doot doot"s and "let's get it on, it's time to get down" did not prevent that one from being considered an instrumental.
And according to my Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, at least one of the Silver Convention's hits were considered "instrumental" (had the "I" after the title).
I hope someone can clear this up for me. When is something considered an "instrumental," and when is it not? Thanks!
