Greatest Intros in Rock

deltas69 said:
all very worthy entries to be sure..but i would propose the greatest intros are the ones you recognize with the first two to four notes.."satisfaction" for instance..many more i'm sure most would recognize with just that first two second riff..... ;)

Unless you're into bass you may not appreciate an intro I like, but the bass is the lead in this record:

Rescue Me--Fontella Bass

There are many, and these two come to mind without a lot of thought:
"Who Are You" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" - the Who

As long as you're speaking of the Who--"I Can See For Miles" has a good intro too.

If someone hasn't used this as an intro for a radio program yet,
I hereby nominate the start to
Karn Evil 9 (1st impression, Part 2) by Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Many people know this song by its opening words:
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends!

Alan Freeman a very famous UK DJ used to use that on his show opening "Pick of the Pops".

If not mentioned:

"Red River Rock" by Johnny and the Hurricanes

"Jupiter C" by Pat and the Satellites.

And the "tune-out" factor in the first couple of seconds in some of these. For instance, the other day, I heard Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" on Mix 92.9, and I hit the dial to change it as soon as I heard the "If I" at the intro!

For these guys, my vote goes to "Call Me Lightning"

Another one I thought of....

No significant U.S. airplay to my knowledge....but Canadians (or anyone familiar with can-con) might agree with me on "Thirsty Ears" by Powder Blues (an early 80s Vancouver group). Another Canadian hit that comes to mind with a great intro is "Sunny Days" by Lighthouse. That one did briefly chart on this side of the border, if memory serves.

Unless I've missed it being mentioned previously, what about "Smoke On The Water"?

Also...

Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Communication Breakdown - Led Zeppelin
Love Removal Machine - Cult
All Night Long - Rainbow
Glad All Over - Dave Clark Five
Slide It In - Whitesnake

The list goes on.....

The Little Man - The Tractors

Classic Rock Intros"

Midnight Rider - Allman Brothers
Natures Way - Spirit
Rock of Ages - Bad Company
Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Takin care of Business - BTO
