Greg Kihn out at KUFX

casual observer said:
Announced today. This is how it appeared in Radio Ink. http://www.radioink.com/Article.asp?id=2533556&spid=24698

A press release just sent to Radio Ink states that Greg Kihn, the Classic Rock Radio morning man in the San Francisco Bay Area and KFOX FM have parted ways as of September 14. Mr. Kihn just celebrated his 16th Anniversary with KFOX FM, which is believed to be the longest reigning radio industry tenure for a morning man with a single station west of the Mississippi. Regarding radio, Kihn states, “I am unemployed, along with a large percentage of my fellow Americans, but I am an optimist. I believe for every door that closes others open. Surely, another broadcast studio door will open and I’ll be back on the air soon doing what I love to do most; entertaining my loyal fans.”

Another reason I'm glad to be on the beach...though gainfully employed. 8)

This looks like a play to grab disaffected listeners from K-FOG.
Pretty interesting that two stations with such similar names were allowed to co-exist in the pre-PPM ratings environment. Did one send a C&D letter to the other at any point?

I hope K-FOX's changes don't mean that The Bone's playlist will start to skew even older than it does now. Bone needs to play more rock from the 90's and 2K's, not less.

The irony is the GM of KFOG who sent the C & D to KFOX is now the GM at KFOX. He probably made the decision to hire Big Rick, Webster and Annalisa as well as the production director away from KFOG.

speaking of KUFX, how can metallica and No Doubt playing next to each other.
and The Bone playing dinosaur rock.

Is like two stations playing classic rock format but completely different style of music.

K-FOX is clearly intending to lean more "Classic Hits" than "Classic Rock" -- they're also playing "I Just Died in Your Arms" by Cutting Crew and stuff by America -- making for some trainwreck segues so far. I don't see why they're shifting, they've been beating The Bone pretty consistently of late. "Disaffected Fogheads" may indeed follow Annalisa to K-FOX, since KFOG's morning show is pretty dull, but Fogheads want more than hearing "Margaritaville" multiple times a week. And they can get that from Oldies 103.7 too.

If I'm not mistaken, the call letters and branding for both stations existed before they competed against each other. KFOG has been playing rock since the early 80s (IIRC), and the same call letters attached to the previous format on 104.5 - Beautiful Music. Both corporatations probably decided there was value in keeping an established identity.

Besides, despite their alphabetical similarity, the words "fog" and "fox" have different meanings...obviously.

I still can't get my head around KFOG as a rock station. When I left S.F. many years ago KFOG and KABL were the two Beautiful Music stations and had foghorn and cable car bells as jingles respectively. I always thought that made S.F. unique among radio stations across the country.

I can think of a couple of other examples along those lines - LA had a Beautiful Music station in the 70s called "The Coast" (KOST) with a bird logo (seagull, maybe), and lots of branding references to the ocean, waves, and the beach. The KOST call letters are still in use there...for a soft rock format, I think.

Another example is in NYC - the famous "Seventy-seven, W-A-B-C" jingle from their Top 40 days, which used the tune from the song "I'll Take Manhattan." From what I've read, ABC actually paid royalties to the composer so they could use the tune.

I still can't get my head around KSAN as a country station, and that's been over with for fifteen years.

Same thing happened to me one day in 1983 (I think) when making a biz trip to the Bay Area I jumped into my rental car and flipped on 93.3 expecting KYA RnR and Country music came out!!!

ARGH!!!!!!!!

Yeah, the KSAN rock to country transition was traumatic for me back in 1980. Parked my car in the morning after commuting listening to rock. Got back in the car after work, turned the key, and...country!!

(Hasten to add that I like a lot of country music...just don't like a great radio station converting its format.)

Its weird that KFOG didn't transform from a beautiful music station into a AC, maybe like Foggy 104.5. Back to KFOX, it seems like they are trying to target sf now, they ID 102.1 first and then 98.5. Are the KUFX call letters headed to 102.1?

I would wager that, Greg Kihn would not give a hairy rat's A** about the KUFX call letters being moved to 102.1 in San Francisco. He could care less about anything dealing with KFOX. He is only focusing on finding employment in this new era of Radio. For many of us, we'll get up in the morning go to our jobs. But poor Greg will be out there humping and schelping his on-air demo reel and resume hoping to find some work as a morning on-air personality.

I'm guessing he's got quite a bit of coin in the bank, unlike a lot of guys his age who get unexpectedly laid off. He's a musician with a back catalog -- they're called "residuals". ;)

I dunno who's right but, KUFX's Wiki page saying CLASSIC ROCK FORMAT. NOT classic hits.
Is Grunge qualify as classic rock.

It's going to have to if the format can survive--just like oldies/classic hits had to admit the existence of disco and New Wave.

uh, that page also says Greg Kihn hosts the morning show so clearly it hasn't been updated yet.

Lucky for them, there probably won't be a hockey season -- having to run the Sharks every other nite for 6 months would be a hindrance when you're trying to broaden your audience and attract more women.

I've been surprised they hadn't moved the Sharks to 95.7 "The Lame", maybe now they will.
