Groove 105.7 is a Dance CHR

Project 9-6-1 is doing too well...#2 in men 18-34 and tied for #2 in men 18-49. Total persons 6+ means very little when you're targeting young men. Doing well in those demos gets Project on media buys for beers, cars, Cheshire Bridge Road establishments, etc.

I didn't know that Project fans were such radio geeks. ;)

Id like to see them stay old school, but more dance intensive with Freestyle and miami bass like MIA 93.9 in Miami.. thats prob my fac rhythmic ac next to KTU, and I only like KTU for the current dance...
I don't remember well enough to know if Power 99 played much freestyle, but if they did I bet they stuck to the basic Debbie Deb, Lisa Lisa, Planet Rock, Egyptian Lover type stuff, and maybe some Shannon and Pretty Poison. Half of Lisa Lisa's hits were not even freestyle. Not sure if any Cover Girls, Expose, or Nocera was played, and I'm sure no Lisette Melendez, TKA, George Lamond... besides, during those days, they were still calling it Latin Hip Hop or break dancing. I do, however, remember someone playing "I'll be loving you" by Collage AFTER Power 99 died, but BEFORE I discovered Star*94, so I can only wonder who was playing that. I don't know why I think it was V-103.... hmmm..... But other than that, I'm sure many people are confusing "freestyle" with "freestyle rapping". Do they even have freestyle concerts in the A? And if so, which station promotes?

I listened to Power 99 quite a bit in the late 80s and while I certainly wouldn't say they embraced freestyle, they did play some of it. Also, as far as the Atlanta booty bass goes, Power 99 also played Kilo's one big hit (can't remember the name at the moment). Anyway, one other station that was short lived, but actually played a lot of the freestyle and rhythmic dance hits in the late 80s was WZGC after they moved from mainstream CHR to rhythmic CHR as "Hot New Z93" (around 1988). As I said, the format only lasted a couple of years before they went classic rock, but they did play a lot of the late 80's dance and rhythmic hits for a while in Atl.

Well I'm currently listening and I've heard two dance (remix) hits so far and the original version of "it wasn't me" by Shaggy. What's funny is that they are not mixing, so they just straight up played those two dance remixed hits back to back in regular rotation.

By the way, my favorite Kilo hit was "show me love". There was another song by Black Dave called "this is not 4 free" that came out after I left Atlanta, so not sure how that one did there, but I surely used it a lot in Phoenix despite the fact no one knew what it was here.

Anyway, I'll keep listening to Groove a little longer to see what happens. I wonder if anyone is playing the new house tracks by Clinton Sparks ft Jermaine Dupri, the new David Guetta ft LMFAO & Fergie...etc.? Any Dj Class, Dj Mad etc. and - WHOOOOAAA - I just heard NESSA's voice! Now THAT is funny. I remember when she was on our KZON before she went back to KYLD in San Fransisco and started syndicating on our KZZP during Club Kiss on Kiss FM. I can't believe they are using Nessa in Atlanta! Anyway, speaking of freestyle, I miss the good ol' days of KYLD. Now all those stations have become pretty much basic rhythmic top 40 stations... except of course for groove which is Rhythmic AC. Nessa + Rhythmic AC = Funny.. but I love Nessa. I just don't think of Nessa as an AC person, but I guess as long as they (The Groove) keep the music 2000+ during the mix it makes sense.

Well... KYLD was THE BEST when it came to freestyle and the west coast latin house & freestyle sound. In many ways, I'd say even better than the old Hot 97 days. Although they played a lot of hip hop, no one else was on Angelina, Lina Santiago, Jonny Z, Jocelyn Enriquez, El Presidente, Rockell, S.F. Spanish Fly, Dj Laz, M:G, Corina, Lil Suzy, Planet Soul, La Rissa...etc. like KYLD, especially in the mix. Not even KPWR. KYLD was THE OFFICIAL Party Station in the late 90's. (Well, ok there was WPOW with the house, bass 'n' freestyle, but still..)

Those days are now a thing of the past, but some Rhythmic AC's and Rhythmic Oldies, depending on their type of formatting, are still kind of giving people a touch of what those days used to be about. I guess for the kids growing up today, their freestyle sound will be Akon "beautiful", Jay Sean "Down", Flo Rida "In the ayer", Missy Elliott "lose control", Justin Bieber "baby"...birthday sex uptempo remix...etc, but I doubt anyone would call it freestyle and a new name will probably be given. Then, they could look at Dj Class, Dj Mad, Pitbull, Black Eyed Peas, David Guetta..etc as this generation of house. In about 10 years, most of this will be beneficial to The Groove, if they keep the format as it is now.

By the way, I'm kind of liking The Groove and their top 40 ways of mixing. Hopefully Cascada comes on or something... or Mike Posner..

Honestly, WWVA's dance mixes sound like something WSTR would (and used to) do. Remixes of pop, pop rock, and r&b hits in the mix. No bass or breakbeat remixes yet.. That's one thing I liked about WBTS mixes! The breaks and modern freestylish electrofied bass sound and remixes their dj's used. Also, there should be shorter edits of some of these songs! BTW, WWWQ was just doing some modernized rhythmic breaks and bass!

The Kilo song that I was talking about that Power 99 had in heavy rotation in the very early 90's was "Hear What I Hear". It had that booty/Miami Bass type sound that was also prevalent in ATL at that time with artists like Kilo and MC Shy D. Here's a link to the Kilo song on You Tube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnpSj23stEk ). It would be fun to hear Groove play a few ATL bass tracks like this that were big in the late 80s and early 90s. Another cool regional one was MC Shy D's "I Wanna Dance"( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4YiFl3U6Jo ). Groove should spike a few of these in for an "oh wow" factor. Plus, it would really relate to the people who grew up in Atlanta at that time.

To be honest, I was really more bored than anything else, but a mix is better than no mix at all. The mix was good and clean, but there was a lack of action and liveness. I have a perfect example of how to sound more hype. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA860qp_NMQ

Hits from back in the day and today, and none of that entire 6 minutes of every dance remix with the same exact drum beat pattern all the way through! Mix it up a bit.. bass, breakbeat, freestyle, house, ...etc. ..And I bet no one knows what freestyle song the beat and female vocals in Flo Rida's "low" came from in my mix, or has heard that electro freestyle remix of No Mercy's "where do you go". Oh, and which Armand Van Helden song did the intro sounds sample come from? What instrumental or sample was used behind the Lady Gaga "Just Dance" acapella? What beats did I use during the first verse of lady gaga's "Just Dance" over the sweet dreams background? Power 99 really should've stuck around for that entire era of sound because I have a feeling that most people will only be able to answer one of the three questions!

This would be the perfect Groove quick mix, too!

i miss the 105 minutes of commercial-free lunch. right after the V-103 old skool lunch mix with elle duncan ended at about 12:25, i would switch it up for a long mega mix of some good stuff.

Taking a look at their playlist and also by what is heard, Groove is definitely heading into the direction of a Dance CHR. Guess they want to take on the Beat and Snore100.

It's "Snore 94" and "Rob Thomas 100"... :)

The music is very upbeat, but maybe its time to dump the older R&B songs. Ex. Next "Wifey" is a great hit, but hearing that followed by Gaga doesn't mix.

They had a shot filling the oldies/rhythm side with the Elvis morning show. Now it's just a wanna be Beat/Q except not as good as either by a long shot. Another CC failure in Atlanta. Who had that in the office pool? Oh, everybody had it.

I still don't know why they didn't come as top 40 or at the least a rhythmic. This whole situation just baffles me beyond belief. How much do you want to bet that the oil leak is solved and NASA is fully back in business before the top 40 situation is solved in Atlanta? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the idea of a Rhythmic AC!

Agree totally, LOL.

I thought when Star went in a younger direction a couple of years ago that it would force Q100 to step it up and work for that "All the Hits" branding...I never would have imagined that both stations would slide back into Daughtry/Buckcherry/Maroon 5 AC territory.

It's laughable and ridiculous at the same time. I was in Athens Saturday and listened to Power 100.1 all day. Their music mix is dead-on, although someone needs to pitch some of the music down a bit, LOL.

I agree. I want a real CHR in Atlanta so badly.

A real CHR reflects the trend of the day. The format goes through multiple cycles during any given decade driven by demographics as they move from cell to cell as a decade unfolds. We're currently in the "mommy and me" cycle, which consists of former 18-24 year olds who grew up with the format since the early 2000's, and their kids. The next phase is the doldoms where top40 and AC will share a lot of their playlist and young adults will start listening to top40 less in favor of rock and urban. When the doldroms end we'll be in a rock cycle and all the AC gold and recurrents will disppear along with many of the air talents currently in the format. Then will come the urban backlash, possibly a year or 2 of dance, and we'll be right back to where we are right now. To digress a bit, when the doldroms end many top40s segue into full blown ac while others reset to the current trend and start all over.

Will all this happen before modern radio goes out of style or before it's surpassed by the new technologies to come?
Lets hope that if internet radio should take over, no one will buy or own ALL the stations! Lets also hope that the freedom to choose your format if you can afford your own net station continues to exist, whether or not it is corporate.
