Groovin 1580

This is just what Lexington needed to compliment WBTF. Groovin 1580, an old school urban station. What I don't like is that they are taking shots at 107.9. The Beat will always be number one.

Lets just guess here and say Clear Channel has flipped 1580 from Espanol now havent they LOL. the last calls i remember 1580 in lexington was having WXRA to go with its old Sports format Xtra 1580

It is WXRA. This station DOES seem to have a "format of the month" kind of thing. I think it will do better with this than Spanish or sports talk as these two genre are already covered in the Lexington area.

Dose the new WXRA have a website yet?? Will they be streaming any time soon?

Also, what other station(s) in the Lexington market are programing a Spanish language format these days? WXRA dropped their Spanish language format on 1580 AM.
The folks that had the old Spanish format on WXRA had a LMA with CC so maybe
they will land on another AM station in Lexington market.

They were urban in the late nineties, IIRC they were called "The Beat". On a decent AM radio 1580 has good audio, but finding a good AM radio is the problem.

I listened a bit on Saturday. It sounded good.

The other Spanish outlet can be found at 1440 AM which used to be urban.

1440 as an Urban, now there is a blast from the past. WRPZ "Z-1440" tried as they could but threw in the towel and turned off the transmitter. Around the same time, late 80's, a non-com out of Frankfort signed on and tried Urban. The station, WVBA sounds right, tried to affiliate itself with KSU but they declined. It's life was short and left the air about the same time as WRPZ. Even though both stations were dark they still showed up in the Birch Ratings for a couple of years after their last broadcast. Speaking of Urban, what happen to WTLA, the cable FM operated by The Urban League?

I never heard WTLA since I don't live in Lexington. What about Power 1250. This, to me, was the BEST urban station the area ever had even though it was on a 500 watt AM stick. Do you remember Rhapsody in Black that was on Saturday nights on 91.3?, and what about Jo Jo's jam session on WMST 105.5. How about Night Beat on WVLK AM 590. These are just a sample of what used to be out there.

Besides 1440 AM, there is 105.7 FM out of Eminence but it is hard to pick up in Lexington. It is near Shelbyville, Ky. 101.7 FM used to be spanish but now they are a simulcast of WKRD 790 AM in Louisville. It is also in Shelbyville.

WTLA was a cable radio station. The company at the time, Telecable had an FM service. They offered a community channel but instead of offering it as public access Telecable gave it to the local Urban League. The fabricated call letters had meaning but I don't remember at the moment. WTLA was at 105.3 FM cable. Since the closest Urban station was WDAO Dayton (until they went to AM) WTLA had a following. They were still on FM cable when I left Lexington in 1991. I'm sure FM service is long gone and WTLA is no more.

There was a guy on WLAP-FM in the early 70's that did a nightly soul show, I can't remember his name. Of course no one has mentioned U102 for a few years and WVLK-AM's block programming. I was fill in at WVLK twenty plus years ago and did fill in for both "Night Beat" and "After Hours". It was odd transitioning from playing AC music into ABC news and then Urban Music. But then again it's more fun playing Cameo than Barry Manilow. Word Up!

U102 was a odd station to me. They never really got down to playing the good stuff to me but during their existence there was nothing else so I had to listen. I remember listening to 100.9 WIZF from Cincinnati as far as I could then switching over to U102 and thinking damn what is this stuff. They were WAY behind in their music sometimes. Same goes for WGZB in Louisville. I hated to lose B96 when I crossed in to Franklin county. Power 1250 was the bomb even with the weak signal and all. The music selections were "strong" alot like Z1440. On a side note, I was able to hear Groovin 1580 down into Tennessee the other day easily traveling down I-75. Great signal. I wonder how they sound north of the transmitter going toward Ohio. The maps I've seen show a huge "null" to the north. Anyone with experience please let me know how they do.

I was finally able to hear Groovin' this weekend. It was decent and being blessed with a wideband AM car radio I really liked the tight processing.

As far as the signal, it shoots it wad to the south and little to the north. It does have a small east and west lobe that covers Georgetown and Frankfort. The night pattern was the same but with only 48 watts. Prior to CC engineers rebuilding the system 1580 achieved 48 watts with a separate 1kw transmitter. You're saying big deal, well they fed the common point not with the main output but with the sample that was intended for the mod monitor. The rest of the 1kw fed into a dummy load. The 10kw rig was "The Blowtorch" and the 1kw rig was nicknamed "Pee-Wee".

I wonder how this station would do against Majic 101.3 if there was one in Louisville?

Looks like the call letters are WGVN now.

It would probably do pretty well against WMJM. With the exception of the current and recurrent Urban AC they play during the daytime, the playlist of "Classics" on Magic 101.3 hasn't changed in years.

Why can't I hear some '60s/'70s Soul, some Stax/Volt besides "Dock Of The Bay," Southern Soul, or Motown cuts that may not have crossed over large but was huge on the R&B charts on WMJM? There's plenty of that out there that would appeal to their core demo and fit the format, but some green researcher that never owned a 45 rpm record or vinyl LP waves them off of it. That's what I liked about WLBJ-AM, which operated in Louisville for about a year spanning 2003-04...they had a huge "oh wow!" factor and went deep into the mine for their gold. If WLBJ had competent management and sales, they'd still be on the air.

R&B Oldies is such a rich vein of music to tap...why give me the same old oldies with the same tired "Quiet Storm" presentation? WMJM gets a lot of default listenership from folks like me, who are 35+ and do not like the rap/hip-hop elements in mainstream Urban Contemporary radio these days. WMJM would be a better station if they opened up that classic playlist and ditched some of the Radio One UAC formula they were forced to operate under in years past.

I wonder how they stack against 107.9. Their website is better than 107.9's AND they are streaming already. But best of all is the signal. I can hear it on every clock radio, home stereo, walkman etc here in Danville with ease. I picked this station over into Tennessee on my car radio. Can't say that about the "Beat" which can barely be heard in Berea. The music is getting repetitive though. I guess I listen too much. I wonder how the night signal is in Lexington? I know here, it is inaudible due to WVKO, Columbus and WPGC, Washington D.C.

1580 won't beat 107.9 but they will cut into 107.9's upper adult demos.. question is how much, could leave 107.9 hurting for adult numbers. 107.9 will always win 12+.. Tom Joyner was on 107.9 for years, DJ Gold was in the market when I was there.. I think Gold has worked at every urban station Lexington has ever had.. both give 1580 instant credibility. Seems CC has the right idea and is willing to spend a little money on it.. should pay off if nothing more giving them an urban option to package and sale.

Does anyone know if 107.9 is responding to 1580?
