Groundwave vis-a-vis Skywave AM Recption?

On December 24 while driving on I-10 abeam Casa Grande, AZ (between Phoenix
and Tucson), I picked up KLO 1430 Ogden, UT between 12:10-12:25 PM MT.

The station was airing Dennis Miller (guest: Seinfeld, I'm sure it was a rerun being
Christmas Eve and a national holiday) and I also heard a local KLO promo.

Good catch! approx. 583 miles (938 km.) http://www.geobytes.com/CityDistanceTool.htm? 25 kW daytime and directional to the south, anyone know what KLO's Effective Radiated Power is going south?

Speaking of KLO, where I live down in Phoenix, AZ, KLO's daytime signal is so strong that when skywave kicks in before sunset, their 25,000 watts causes some hash to spill over to a fan favorite local station out of Scottsdale, KAZG on 1440 AM. Looking at KLO’s daytime coverage map, their signal out of Ogden heavily favors the south of Utah and may explain why it is strong enough to cause interference with our local, even though it’s on an adjacent frequency. This interference continues until either KLO powers down to their prescribed 5000 watts of night-time power or KAZG’s lamptimer kicks in and abruptly shuts down the Lumberyard for the day! ;D

This morning KMOX was in well at 9:15am here in Charleston. KDKA, WBBM, WNCT 1070, 1530 from Cincinnati, and a couple others were also in at that time.

Skywave stations start coming in just after 3pm, meaning there's less than 6 hours in a day where regular daytime signals come in, maybe less.

I've been getting skywave at noon even here as far south as 32°45'40"N. That seems to say that at this time of the year there is NO time when reception is strictly groundwave.

I've noticed the same thing for the last few years around the winter solstice. Sometimes it manifests itself as fading at shorter distances at high solar noon.

Yes this time of year is the best for possible daytime skywave.
