grundig G5?

any of you guys own this radio? i just picked it up from radio shack to replace my eton e10 (finally :)). the damn thing died. i have wanted the grundig g5 for about a year now. let me tell you what!!! well worth the 149 dolllars i spent! this thing is soooo amazing! i'm here in altamonte springs just north of orlando and now i can get tampa and jacksonville stations like they were locals. i know it has been cold here but i can tell this radio has damn good reception. and for am? what can i say, some of the best am reception i have sceen. i'm talking car radio quality reception on both am and fm. and shortwave is good as well. that eton e10 was nothing compared to this radio. tonight i am going to do some more dxing and see what happens :).

I have the Eton E5, same radio as the Grundig G5, very good performance on SW, FM, and decent AM weak signal reception. My only complaint is that the SW/FM antenna fell off of the radio and I had a difficulty time to put it back in, and this was after frequent use opf the radio.

Well, I have an E5 and a G5 and they're basically the same radio. And, they are also my favorite radios to use - for all frequencies. Yes, the Sony ICF-SW7600GR can pull in weak AM signals a little better; but the SW reception is essentially the same as the E5/G5 and it's absolutely deaf on FM. Not to mention that it's totally digital so dial scanning is a chuff-filled chore.

For the price and size, your Grundig G5 is a really hot radio; I've enjoyed some great dx with it and it's a joy to use. Check out Eton's website for the description of the new G3 Voyager, which is essentially a G5 with selectable sideband, RDS and Air band added (see here: http://www.etoncorp.com/product_card/?p_ProductDbId=916030). Very intriguing......

Wow. I have an E-10 and I've been pretty happy with it, but now I want to check out the E-5!

The E-10 has been a very good radio, but not quite up to my Yacht Boy PE 300 and my DX 375. At least back in the day. The Yacht Boy headphone jack doesn't work, and the DX 375 has no antenna other than the ferrite core for am....and the speaker no longer works. But these two still do a fabulous job with weak signals. My main gripe with the E-10 is that it has no bfo. A relatively minor point in the grand scheme of things.

I have a Grundig G6, which is very similar to the G5, but smaller, cheaper, and with aircraft band. The aircraft band isn't really good, but it wasn't why I got it. It's a nice little radio on AM, FM, and SW. It's a great size for travel, and it's a great deal. They have the "Buzz Aldrin Edition", which can't be sold above $99.99, and I got it at Radioshack on sale for $79.99. I might spring for the G3 when it comes out, because the main reason why I didn't get a Sony 7600GR was that it lacked a tuning knob. The G3 looks like it does what the Sony does, but with a tuning knob, RDS, and aircraft band. My next radio purchase will probably be either the G3 or maybe the CCRadio-SW.

The CCRadio-SW is great for pulling in hard to find FM signals and is pretty hot on AM too. Really excellent on those bands. However, it lacks BFO - so no hams or navigation reports....at least not without an external accessory (which they sell for it). Depending on the price of the G3, which will have a BFO with selectable sidebands as well as a sync function, it may well turn out to be more bang for the buck. I think $150 for the CCRadio-SW is a bit high.

I have that exact radio and I can get FM radio stations well over 80 miles out just with the built in antenna. I take that thing everywhere. the lasttime I listened to it was while I was bike riding from my place just outside of Weatherford Texas. I managed to pick up a couple of stations out of Waco as well as Abilene. pretty good for a radio it's size.

looks like i may splerge one day and get the g3 as well. but one thing i know is that i love my g5 more with the day. i can't wait for tropo this summer. it should be quite fun.

If you really wanted to splurge, get an Eton E1. This is one of the most recommended portables. They have one that is XM ready, although they also have a model that doesn't have all the XM bells and whistles.

Does it have a better AM than the G5?

The G5 has been very good for me. Yes there are better AM receivers, but the G5 is good enough and great for traveling anyplace.
Has anyone bought a Grundig G5 from Radio Shack since Mid-November of 2008?

The reason I am asking is that on the Radio Shack website for this radio - in the comment section; people who have bought this radio the last few months have had some very negative comments about the quality of the radio. Audio problems, reception problems, problems with the external antenna, shorting out the radio etc.

It almost looks like the latest batch may have a severe quality control issue. Even some of the admirerers of this unit, admit that they had to take the original back (and in one case someone was on their third model) and it was the 2nd or 3rd one that made them happen. After reading all these reviews, I'm hesitant to buy one.

When I looked last week, the were on clearance at Radio Shack, marked down from the $150 level to $130.

Sounds like a bad batch. I bought mine at Radio Shack 2 years ago and it has always worked perfectly.

Hmmmm. I have this radio (Eton E5 version) for 2 years, no problems with the quality, sound and the reception. Like what I said in the earlier post, just the antenna that came off of the radio. However, I do plan to get the G3 whenever it becomes available if its RF performance is as good as the G5/E5.

I have a Grundig G5.

It's my favorite radio to DX mediumwave, because every night tons of stations 500+ miles away come in. Even KEX 1190 came in on my G5 like a local one night.

This radio helped me pick up my farthest catches (KVNS Brownsville, TX at 2021 miles, and WCKY in Cincinatti at 1965 miles.)

I LOVE IT!

Does it have a better AM than the G5?

Some of the reviews that I have read tend to indicate that it does not, unless connected to an external longwire. The basic comparison, from what I could tell, indicated that the E1 had a lower noise floor but that the E5 was more sensitive on AM, FM, and SW with the built in antennas. However, if you add an external antenna for any of the above, then the E1 is probably better. The consensus seemed to be that, for the money, the E5 was a better buy. It's also truly portable.

I actually have an E5 and liked it so much that I bought a G5. The performance of each seems to be equal. Oddly, the E5's whip antenna seems more solid but the performance of the 2 units is pretty much equal. I have traveled all over the place with the E5 and it's taken a beating in the process - including dropping it onto the concrete floor of my Calgary hotel's balcony at -26 F! Still works like a champ.

Thanks for the report BRNout. I likr the G5 also because of it's portability & it's worked very well for me.
26 floors is a good test! :D
