GSN gets "$ale" and more of "PYL," among other things

I'd like to see the syndicated nighttime version of Sale of the Century that had bigger money. It was never on to my knowledge in the Memphis area. For that matter, WMC in Memphis showed the NBC version very little because of their obsession with pre-empting most of NBC's game shows in the 80's.

GSN has gone to showing reruns of classic game shows in the mornings, so I won't be surprised to see Sale end up there as well.

When it gets about a week outside of premiering, I'm going to set that DVR! It's been forever since I saw $ale in any form on USA. (The reason I referred to it as $ale is because it's because that's how it was rendered on the title card; IIRC, this is how a lot of game show forums rendered it as well.)

I'm not happy that they took off Jeopardy although what they had been showing was Season 25 (2008-2009) which is a little too recent. I highly doubt they will show any 80s or most of the 90s shows again because they are older and are harder to play along with but I wish they could pick up something somewhat earlier that hasn't been shown like Season 15 (1998-1999), 16 (1999-2000), 17 (2000-2001), 19 (2002-2003), or 20 (2003-2004(they did show Jennings shows only from that season at one point)). I also wish they would show Wheel of Fortune again.

I think a good mix of new and classic shows is the right combination for GSN. Kind of like what they did several years ago. It is decidedly "new" in recent history. (Can't stand the latest incarnation of the Newlywed Game)

Last time I saw Wheel on GSN was around 2008 or 09. They were running 1994/95 episodes at that point of time.

I am younger than 55 years of age and I am very interested in watching "Sale of the Century" and the other past game shows the Game Show Network acquired recently.

My comment was made somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I am in the same boat as you. But apparently there aren't enough of us. Or at least not in Nielsen's National Peoplemeter sample.

The traditionalists here will continue to insist that it's more profitable to target a marginal slice of the 25-54 pie than to superserve any demo that consists of people 55 and older.

Quoting from the linked article:

"GSN announced today a host of new acquisitions of classic game shows and episodes, including the GSN premiere of SALE OF THE CENTURY, featuring 65 episodes that originally aired on NBC in 1988–89 with host Jim Perry."

I wonder why it's just the 65 episodes from that season (which was its last?) If Wikipedia is correct, the Jim Perry version started in 1983. Perhaps they are playing it safe by starting with a relatively small number of episodes to see if the show has a big enough following.

I usually rely on the Internet Movie Database for the first calendar years of TV programs rather than Wikipedia since the site has editors who would check the information they receive from visitors before deciding whether to put the information on the site or not (the database had 1983 for "Sale of the Century" also, by the way).

Could you explain "Jennings shows"?

Both the Perry version of "Sale" and "Press Your Luck" started
in 1983; "Sale" on January 3, "PYL" on September 19. This is
from "The Encyclopedia of TV Game Shows." "PYL" lasted until
September 26, 1986, while "Sale" continued until March 24, 1989.

I really wish they had been able to acquire "Scrabble" in the package with "SotC." Both were produced by Reg Grundy. Maybe these shows will help take the place of some of the back-to-back-to-back-to (well, you get the picture) airings of Steve Harvey's "Family Feud."

Which brings me to one of the big gripes about GSN's programming -- they find one show that gets them a few ratings blips and wallpaper their schedule with it. A couple years ago it was "Deal or No Deal" before that it was "Who Wants to be a Millionaire."

I hope that GSN decides to get more episodes of Sale Of The Century (the earlier Jim Perry episodes from 1983 to 1988) as showing 65 episodes over 13 weeks would burn out quickly. Are those episodes expensive to show since GSN only got 65 episodes of Sale?

Let's hope that GSN decides to air some of these classic shows during the afternoons both on weekdays and weekends. Definitely better than Dog Eat Dog, Minute To Win It and Deal Or No Deal which GSN has run to death.

And I would like to see GSN bring back Let's Make A Deal (70's syndicated episodes and the 1984-1986 All New LMAD) and Ray Combs' Family Feud.

None of those three have been in my favorites either, believe it or not! They do have fanbases, but I am not in any of them.

How much are classic Price is Right episodes?

I would love to see a run of the old Dennis James-hosted nighttime TPIR. He was hilarious! My Dad and I watched just to see what inadvertantly funny thing he would do.
