Guarding Central Avenue

Nurse Jeff is cruising the parking lot of the men in secret underwear, carefully removing sharp objects in light of P1. The once mighty six-20 is now #10 and appears in a freefall. KFYI? Tied for #2. And AirheadAmericaPhoenix resides in the ratings basement, bested by a Flagstaff FM that plays Sinatra, Dean Martin and other faves of the Otis Elevator Co. Oh well, eventually this carnage on Central will get someone's attention down there!

It time KTAR need new ownership to keep the ratings up once again from #10 to the mighty #1 place again.

Or a talk show that appeals to someone under 55.

Of course, as to KXXT, the LWers continue to make it an issue about "free speech". They just don't get it. Well, if a tree falls in the forest of free speech...

Doc, it's worse than #10. Because of ties, there are actually 12 stations ahead of KTAR...in effect making it #13. In my 20 years in the market, that's the lowest I remember. It was only six years ago that I was appalled when, on Laurie's watch, it slipped to #6. Tisa took it back to #1 (where it was for most of the 4 years I spent there), but shortly after dumping Preston, it fell to #11. This could in fact be the all-time low. The last time KTAR wasn't doing well, there may not have been 13 signals in the market.

It's important to note that none of this can get laid on new PD Russ Hill. He's still working with what he inherited.

Finally, as to the gap between KFYI and KTAR, it's been worse...in Fall '04, it was 2.6 share points. This trend, it's only 1.5.

The KTAR ratings disaster reminds me of what happened to KFWB News 98 in Los Angeles. Back in the late 70's, when KFI was still AM Top 40, KFWB was one of LA's big news powerhouses. They had cume and ratings. Now they (like KTAR) have Dodgers baseball, crappy ratings and ride way back in the pack. I don't think KTAR will ever fully recover their successes from the past. They still, however, are at the top of the pack in revenue.

CBS needs two all-news stations in Los Angeles like Sheriff Joe needs another phto-op! KFWB makes money for CBS with baseball and doesn't siphon audience from KNX. It's a combination that makes a lot of $ense! Meanwhile, KT'R ratings matter as the men in secret underwear are at a disadvantage to the Clear Channel Cluster Buster combination.

CBS needs 2 all-news stations in LA like you need a new act. or at least a new set of cliches.

You got it exactly backwards in LA.

KFWB bills on its cume during daylight hours. Baseball is a drag on the audience, which has moved away from radio baseball in general and the Dodgers in particular (now that a cheapskate carpetbagger has bouught the team - strike that - was given the team by Fox).

KNX's audience has siphoned away over the years to KFI, NPR or anything else. Although David Eduardo has analyzed the top-secret chicken entrails and says otherwise, the NPR affiliates point to their increasing listener base, and KNX's decreasing base, as evidence for this.

And now, the inevitable contradiction from D-E:

> CBS needs 2 all-news stations in LA like you need a new act.
> or at least a new set of cliches.

I do not think anyone would object to having two stations that are billing over $30 million. This is the same reason why the same company has two news AMs in NY.

Baseball on radio in LA, which is so highly ethnic, is a drag just as you say. Add your other point about the softening of radio as a vehicle for baseball and it can be seen that putting the team on KFWB was a horrible idea.

NPR in LA is not NPR in DC, SF or some other markets. Sure, it is a fragger but as long as the market only has 100 share points every station freags every other one.

Actually, I agree in part. And, if you separate revenue from ratings, I agree that neither KNX nor KFWB are doing particularly well... although KNX has been moving upwards, especially in 25-54.

Now I'm totally flummoxed. I've baited both KM and D-E and no one wants to play.
