"GL" did air on CBS radio at 1:45 Eastern. At the time
the cast would do the television show live at 12:45,
then head for another studio and do the radio show--
live. Same episode, with some visual aspects removed.
I think I put this on the National TV board, but I saw in
"Soap Opera Weekly" that P&G has been talking with Lifetime
and Oxygen about continuing "GL." They have shown virtually
no interest, and a P&G spokesperson says that "GL has about
a 1% chance of continuing past Sept. 18."
A year from now I think we'll be talking about "As The World
Turns" the same way we're talking about "GL" now. And that
will mean that, for the first time since the 1930s, P&G has not
had a show on the air.
However, I'm not ready to throw in the towel on soaps completely.
Although I think the decline began during the O.J. Simpson trial
in the '90s, when people realized they didn't need their daily soap fix
(plus the fact that not many women are home in the daytime), I
don't see an end to "Y&R," "B&B," or the ABC soaps anytime soon.
