GUILDING LIGHT CANCELED AFTER 72 YEARS

Don't know how accurate this is, since I saw it on
Wikipedia, but supposedly GL is moving to YouTube
on September 21. Will they be new episodes or
reruns? Stay tuned.

You Tube? I am taking a guess to say that if it does happen it would be reruns since CBS already has an account there. Now for new episodes that "could" still be possible, but if it does happen I wonder if the actors would even get paid since there is so much on that site where videos are done on a lark.

I'm not holding my breath that it'll go to YouTube,
or anywhere else, for that matter. "GL" is hardly
an advertiser's dream. And to be honest with you,
although I'll miss the fact that "GL" is no longer part
of the daytime scene (after all, it was well established
before I was born in 1955), I haven't enjoyed the
show in years.

And again, my source was Wikipedia, not known for
its reliability.

What are some sources for old "Guiding Light" radio transcriptions, kinescopes and videotapes? I'm interested in the oldest extant radio and video sources available.

And on what date did "GL" leave CBS Radio? I believe it was shortly before "Ma Perkins" ended the era of radio daytime serials in the fall of 1960.

By the way, I forsee game shows of some type replacing "GL" in the CBS Daytime lineup...I can't see CBS returning 3:00:00-3:57:27 PM ET to local affiliates, although CBS does have good relations with its stations, better than ABC and NBC.

The program's last radio broadcast was on June 29th, 1956 at 1:45 PM (probably Eastern time). You can listen to recordings of "The Guiding Light" from its radio years at the following address: http://www.archive.org/details/GuidingLightOTRKIBM

Sad to say, I have to agree with those posting on this thread that GL is an anachronism. Why Procter and Gamble has stayed in the TV business to this point is a thorough mystery to me; I cannot figure any other reason than inertia and tradition.

I very well imagine the next several years will witness the increasing dissolution of network daytime--nobody is doing great right now against the audience erosion brought on by CNN, Fox News, and other "reality" alternatives to the make-believe world of daytime serials. Even daytime's last remaining network game, The Price is Right, has fallen considerably since Bob Barker's retirement; Drew Carey could do an about-face with his hosting style and it still would not matter.

The void will be filled not only with the flotsam of talk and so-called "reality" shows, but I suspect that NBC's expansion of the Today Show to four hours may be the model for ABC and CBS to expand their respective morning news coverages; probably the only thing in the way of that on some stations is the continued popularity of Live With Regis and Kelly in syndication. If that show ever peters out--and believe me, it will when Regis retires--watch out. It is not entirely outside the realm of possibility that we may well see the Today Show last until 2 or 3 p.m. in the future (and/or Good Morning America). You heard it here first!

"GL" did air on CBS radio at 1:45 Eastern. At the time
the cast would do the television show live at 12:45,
then head for another studio and do the radio show--
live. Same episode, with some visual aspects removed.

I think I put this on the National TV board, but I saw in
"Soap Opera Weekly" that P&G has been talking with Lifetime
and Oxygen about continuing "GL." They have shown virtually
no interest, and a P&G spokesperson says that "GL has about
a 1% chance of continuing past Sept. 18."

A year from now I think we'll be talking about "As The World
Turns" the same way we're talking about "GL" now. And that
will mean that, for the first time since the 1930s, P&G has not
had a show on the air.

However, I'm not ready to throw in the towel on soaps completely.
Although I think the decline began during the O.J. Simpson trial
in the '90s, when people realized they didn't need their daily soap fix
(plus the fact that not many women are home in the daytime), I
don't see an end to "Y&R," "B&B," or the ABC soaps anytime soon.

I'm hearing that "Let's Make A Deal" is off to
a good start in "GL"'s timeslot. Anyone know
any details?

Also, earlier today I was glancing at "Soap
Opera Weekly," and get ready for a shocker:
"General Hospital" is tied with "ATWT" at the
bottom of the ratings! It also looks as if
"Days Of Our Lives" may be settling in at
number three, behind "Y&R" and "B&B."

I was trying to look for the first week ratings for Let's Make a Deal, but to no avail. I mentioned before that I though it was OK show, but I just don't think it can survive as a one-hour show.
