Gulf Coast Radio Thoughts

Was on the Coast this past weekend visiting family and thought I'd share my take on the radio I listened to while there.

GO-FM: Listened the most to this one. Caught the Firday 4:20 Weerdout w/ Pat Benetar "Shadow's of the Night" Great song and great to hear it on radio again! Really enjoyed hearing Wayne and crew talk it up over the intros and Ken Ashley had a good promo for the night show. Overall the music selection is really good..
Enjoyed the first hour of Sunday's Flashback show.

Magic: They played one good song, then one that sucked...Just like they always seem to do. No weekend jocks which is a big downer. Noticed newer sounding sweepers/jingles and apparently they have w---ed out the studio naming rights to Butch Oustalet Mazada, just listen to the Tophour calls..."From the Butch Oustalet Studio this is WMJY-FM...", intrestingly no mention of the Magic moniker during the calls and the voice on the call is none other than morning man Walter Brown.

Coast 102: They are starting to sound more 'Classic hit(ish)' in the music vs. just saying they are, this being based on the last time I heard them a few months back.

Z95: Seems they want to give 105 some competition with their own 4 hour non-stop music block each morning. Outrageous Tophour though, "Broadcasting at a 100,000 Watts this is WZNF-FM Lumberton, Hattiesburg, Pensacola...Bhagdad...Z95.3," Must have foregot their studio is in Gulfport ::)

The big winner for the weekend: GO-FM for the music and Z95 for the Tophour

The big loser for the weekend: Magic for still airing that gawd alfuwl D-Bitch at night.

With 102.3 transitioning to Classic Hits (as are most Oldies stations across the country), this sets up an interesting competition with 105.9 (which itself recently transitioned from Classic Rock.) Will be interesting to see who wins this one.

Who's winning the Country battle these days? Last time I checked, K99 and Kicker were about even (?)

Finally, how is 104.9 sounding since CC flipped them to News/Talk?

Give Weerd Wayne kudos for remembering such a cool Pat Benatar song! I found that song in the record library at 94QID back in 1990 and played it a time or two... It was great to sneak in some classic rock tunes on the station that made 'em hits in the first place...

"Naming Rights" to the legal ID is the latest Clear Channel innovation. They do the same thing in Columbus, Ohio. One station has the "Cord Camera Shop" studios, another one has the "Nationwide Insurance" studios. It sounds stupid if you ask me.

Speaking of WOSM, what's the status of their upgrade? If I remember correctly, they have a CP to go from C2 to C1. This will give them a decent signal into Mobile.

Drew,

Some how I feel GO will have the market on Classic Hits. Coast 102 says they are Classic Hits and while they play a few newer cuts ,(for them at least ;)) they still have a very predominante oldies library. They will have to phase out the 60s and most of the early 70s, save for a few landmark singles, before I personally consider them to be Classic Hits.

As best I understand K99 and Kicker 108 are both still duking it out for top country honors, though I think both stations could stand a re-tool and K99 would fare better with different owners...

104.9 typical snooze feast to me. Standard right wing talk by day and Coast 2 Coast AM on overnights. It is only there because [EDIT] Channel wants in place for the next disaster much like their fiasco over in New Orleans with the former WRNO. As a side note, it apperas [EDIT] Channel has dropped piped in black gospel on 92.5 in favor of another urban A/C format...(as if they didn't learn the first time with V104.9), not ripping the format, but CC has seemingly foregot they already went there and lost...besides loyalty to that format belongs to Rip Daniels up at 94.5 and he is live and local

Kevin,

It's good to have someone like Wayne in the market. His experience and knowledge count for a lot and it shows with the way he programs GO. Speaking of WQID (R.I.P.) did you ever get your website with those airchecks back up? If so please let me know.

I agree on [EDIT] Channel whoring out studio naming rights. This is radio for Pete's sake, not a major leauge sports arena! The ------ bags in San Antonio don't get the message I guess...Hopefully they'll lose more money and have to sell even more stations!

NLW,

I did not nor do I plan to listen to WOSM. While I appreciate Cooper giving a local voice in the market, I have no support for his gospel music, but at least that is better than some evangelist shouting for money and telling people how to vote.

Here's what I've been listening to since it launched a week ago in Orlando:

www.sunny1059.com

They call it "Orlando's *Greatest* Hits." Musically, it's more pop than the typical Classic Hits station. More energy and personality vs the "Coast" and "My" stations (107.3/Pensacola, etc.)

The playlist spans from 1967-89. Real jocks, not just liners and sweepers. It's a CBS product, modeled after the successful relaunch of CBS-FM in NYC.

In my opinion, these guys got it right. Would love to hear one of these on the Coast.

sunny 105.9 sounds good.. Just heard MY GUY mary Wells 1964.so the playlist does dip into the mid 60;s to pick up the icon songs.Even Classic Hit formats can't ignore those songs...But mostly 70-80's with an Icon sprinkled in...kinda surprised they played it in the 7-mid daypart, instead of morning or mid day.

Sort of back on topic: I did mornings on Coast 102 and it got very boring playing the same oldies over and over again. Glad to see they are updating/expanding. In my opinion, there wouldn't be anything worth listening to on the Coast without Wayne keeping some of the legacy alive. Actually, I'm surprised that this many Coast stations are still surviving there. That said, I still miss the area. Maybe one day...........

Powerpig56: When were you on Coast? I lived in Ocean Springs from February-August, 2005. They were still very much traditional Oldies at that point.

Looking at your username, I have to ask: Did you ever work at WFLZ during the reign of the Pig? Now *that* was a radio station!

I was in Coast Radio for around 20 years. I mornings at Coast 102 around 93-94. I didn't work at the Powerpig but did steal the name.

Yikes, I remember how repetitive Coast 102 was in the mid-90's...other than mornings did they even have live jocks?

Between the tourists and the zoomies (transient audience) I can understand sticking to a 500-song playlist and hope you win in the cume but I rarely heard any of the "oh wow" titles that this format usually sprinkles in.

Powerpig, any insight on how Coast was programmed musically back in the day?

It's been a while, but I seem to remember a dos based software program named after a cat that handled the music. It was something like Cheetah or Jaguar. I then went in a fine tuned the music length. We were live in mornings and afternoons.

How does WXYK The monkey in Biloxi compare to WABB in Mobile? While WXYK only has 6000 watts, WABB's monster signal covers almost the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast.

WXYK is solid to about Gautier. East of there, it starts to get interference from WYCL-107.3 in Pensacola.

Ironically, WYCL (currently a full Class C) holds a CP to increase height from a new site west of their current transmitter location. However, this requires them to decrease power to 50,000 watts and decrease class to C0. Not sure WHY they would want to do this. They will lose coverage in Destin-Fort Walton and pick up nothing to the west. I'm assuming WXYK is the limiting factor which requires them to drop to C0 in order to make the move (?)

> Not sure WHY [WYCL] would want to do this

It gets them City Grade in Mobile. On the new tower location, the 70 dBu falls west of I-65. On the current location, the 70 dBu doesn't make it through Downtown.

Plus, it relieves them of a redundant transmitter site. A big plus. They'll be with the other big stick stations.

Never mind the 50 kW downgrade saves a few bucks on the power bill.
