Yeah, they've definitely opened it up! I heard them play Red Hot Chili Peppers going in to LMFAO "Sexy & I Know It" this morning.
LMFAO, Nirvana, Ke$ha, AC/DC, Killers, Eminem, and Linkin Park on the same station is quite unique. At least they're pressing forward with newer stuff and not reverting back to AC. Perhaps they think adding more rhythmic stuff will help in the target demo (30s females) which we have no idea about their performance in.
I have to agree with your second paragraph. That's definitely true with a lot of stations towards the end. You sort of hear desperation. I hope that's not the case with MY. They have flaws - like other stations - but I would miss it as a listening option.
