Harpo - Laurie Cantillo Former PD 550 KFYI

Oprah's radio division sheds GM John Gehron and PD Laurie Cantillo

Even the Oprah Winfrey empire isn't immune to budget cutbacks, which claim respected veterans Gehron and Cantillo. Gehron helped found Harpo Radio - the basis of the "Oprah & Friends" XM channel - in mid-2006 and staffed it with people such as programmer Laurie Cantillo. They're both being laid off as of today, with Harpo Radio apparently to be overseen by Harpo exec (and former top XM programming executive) Eric Logan. The T-R-I newsletter reports that two other staffers will be promoted to help run the facility that's located in Chicago's West Loop. Gehron's email to the industry says "This has been a remarkable experience and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to build something here." His long resume includes programming WLS, Chicago and WCBS-FM, New York, being a general manager, a group head for American Radio Systems and then a regional executive for CBS and Clear Channel. His email is [email protected].

The Chickboss also was PD of KT'R before crossing over to KFWhyEye. It was at 5~Fifty the Chickboss realized Toaster Talk was a relic from the past and put together a lineup that KT'R couldn't beat on AM. Nurse Jeff and I have almost forgiven her for keeping Dr Laura on as long as she did!

Your right about her putting on a line-up that KTAR couldn't beat. I wish nothing but the best for Laurie. She's a very talented woman.

We can just picture Dr. Akbar and Nurse Jeff snuggling, spoon-style, while dozing through morning drive on KOY. Then off to brunch on McDowell, lingering over coffee for hours discussing the state of radio in Phoenix. Then, after 3pm, sipping martinis at Durante's discussing the state of radio in Phoenix. Then, weaving home west on the 10 for another evening of cuddling with each other while dreaming about radio in the Valley.

Is anything at all working for you Doc?

That's pretty much it...but you left out listening to Aunt Carlos' constant soap opera from St Johns. The time we spend with Oldiesfan on the banks of the Crosscut Canal waiting for the lamptimer to do it's thing on 14~Forty. Checking to see if it's safe to reinstall 94~Five on the Gremlin's radio pre-sets (and it isn't). Wondering if there's anyone more annoying than JD Blowhard on the radio. And our nightly seances with the Old Gringo at the Buckeye Media Hut to fill our little heads with all kinds of radio mush.

Is anything at all working for you Doc?

Dreams of Liz Habib....but don't tell Nurse Jeff!
