Harry Smith jumps to NBC

I like Harry Smith. He has been screwed countless times by CBS over the years and it is high time he moves on. Good luck Harry..

I think that the CBS morning show was at its best when Harry Smith and Paula Zahn were the hosts. (a long time ago)

Scott Pelley being awarded the Evening News job instead of Harry was pretty much the final straw.

That and/or Harry being booted from the Early Joke, er, Early Show.

Funny, CBS has a great Sunday Morning show but the last time I really wanted to watch CBS before going to work on weekdays was when I worked at a CBS affiliate in the early 1980s and had to watch the morning show (from which Sunday Morning was essentially formatted as a classier weekend edition of the daily show).

(That requirement about watching the network, as we were a CBS affiliate, also got me hooked on some soap operas, but that's another story.)

Harry has a chance to be a senior statesman at NBC, perhaps on a par with Bob Schieffer at CBS.

That, and even longer ago when Bill Kurtis and Diane Sawyer headed up the show (early 80's.)

Personally I miss Hughes Rudd on the old CBS Morning News in the 70's. Delightfully cynical and sarcastic (although I will gladly forget the Sally Quinn aberration from the early 70's, which was painful to watch.)

Harry has been under used by CBS for a long time. There is something 'likeable" about him. Probably he should have been given the CBS Evening News chair. I hope he gets more airtime at NBC.

I hope Harry is happier and kicks butt at NBC!!

I concur. He's been passed over time and time again, decade after decade, by CBS as they brought in new heads of their news department. I wish him all the best and good luck and definitely look forward to seeing him pop up on NBC News programming and perhaps msnbc as a guest or to talk about current events on Morning Joe or something of that nature.

Other way around..."Sunday Morning" came first, in 1979, and it wasn't until a few years later (1981-ish, maybe 1982) that CBS tried to expand the franchise to weekday mornings, using Charles Kuralt and, if memory serves, Diane Sawyer as co-anchors. It was a noble effort, but the slow-paced Sunday show didn't translate well to weekdays and it was replaced after a year or so.

Though NBC has one of those, too, in the form of Tom Brokaw...

Time has been more kind to Brokaw than Schieffer, though. Schieffer is seems increasingly uncomfortable on the air, and only appears on Face The Nation and special coverage for CBS such as presidential speeches. I feel like he should fully retire. The problem is that CBS still can't replace him on Face. They had Gloria Borger; she stepped to CNN. Then they tried Harry Smith, who completely failed at moderating Face. Now he's leaving too. They've brought in Norah O'Donell, and it appears CBS will try to groom her for Schieffer's post.

Wow this is a shocker.I did not know Harry was leaving CBS.For a minute I though Harry was going to take the CBS Evening news job over from Katie Couric.before Scott Pelley was picked.Good luck to Harry.

I'm sorry to hear this. But he was too warm and fuzzy to be any better than Katie in that job. He made a good substitute.
