HARRY WEST ON WILK

GG and Ron Allen often felt people were forced on them by outside influences. Worse yet, Ron used to get his hackles up because George would hire someone he liked, while completely ignoring Ron's thoughts on the matter. Unfortunataly, the victim in these situations was the new hire, and the poor soul had done nothing other than accept a job. I could cite several instances where Ron didn't speak to the "new guy" for literally months. It could be a really weird environment.

And then there is Dale Cleveland. Haven't heard his name in years, and do believe he is deceased. Dale had that "Voice of God" set of pipes, and could read a news cast like few others in the business anywhere. Post-WARM, I'm not quite sure what happened to Dale, anyone know? The story I heard is that his "finding Jesus" experience pretty much happened overnight; one day he was a heathen like the rest of us, the next day a new man. And, yes, I did hear he was a bit over-zealous with it all. He's another one who didn't last long. Like I mentioned down earlier in this thread, the early to mid-70s were really unstable at WARM, people came and went very quickly.

Ialso believe Dale Cleveland has passed away. He became Dale Quentin Cleveland later in life. Toward the end, writing letters to television and radio stations, and newspapers wasn't enough. He stopped by frequently, and was even banned from one property in town.

I think between the DALE, the QUENTIN, and the CLEVELAND, his given name was in there somewhere, but I'm unsure of the right combination. Nigel is right, the man became unwelcome at several media locations in the area, but I just can't recall what his agenda was. If my memory is any good, I think it was hard to figure out what it was he found so upsetting. I would love to know what his story was, anyone here know?

Don Donovan came from WNBC, I believe, and his background made a big impression on Susquehanna

Didn't make an impression on my gang. I hung with a bunch of WARM junkiies and I remember Donovan's first show which was highly promoted. We piled into this one guy's car (we were juniors in high school at the time) and tuned in to WARM to hear the guy. The news guy makes this fanfare about Donovan's
first show, the guy starts out with Lynn Anderson's "Rose Garden", doesn't talk up the post, and then at the end, says, "I'm Donovan and I'm here". Then he goes into a block of spots and that was it.
I think he was gone by the fall of '71.

That's very true. Jim Gannon was treated a bit that way. On one of his first shows, he was getting feedback and Ron Allen came up to him after his shift and said something like "Get a different headset" and walked away. Other say Allen was a great guy. I guess it all depends on "if" he liked you or not. of course, Ron wasn't treated all that good by the home office. Didn't they hold up him on his contract for some time and then brought in Bill Kimble and returned Allen to just sports? Seems he moved in and out of the PD office more than once.

Who might you be ? I did afternoon drive at WYNS in 1977-78.

Fascinating thread for a number of reasons. First, it being about the once legendary WARM and its many personalities. Second, I noticed the thread was resurrected from 2007. Third, because of references to the Byzantine Rite. When I saw a post that referenced St. John Chrysostom, I had to wonder if I was really reading a radio message board. I'm originally Byzantine (Diocese of Passaic) but now Roman and I found the religous references particularly interesting. I'm surprised that anybody in a Byzantine seminary would be given the lattitude to do radio. If you know the Byzantine Rite, you know what I mean. It has a history of being more rigid, mystical and ceremonial than other Rites of the Catholic church. Really enjoy visiting the NEPA board.

He is still alive, but once again off the radio!!... I am no longer working with Jim... I think his radio days are over FOR GOOD!! (Or at lest I hope so!, or should I say "Pray" they are!!)

From a 2008 Church Bulletin at St. Joseph's in Girardville, PA:

FATHER JAMES N. DRUCKER was ordained to the priesthood on 4 December 1978.
He quietly observed the 30th anniversary of this momentous event this past Wednesday.
Fr. Drucker is a priest of the Ruthenian Catholic Eparchy of Passaic. Last year, he retired as Catholic Chaplain of the Lebanon Valley VA Hospital. He lived in St. Joseph Rectory, Pottsville, until both Fr. Connolly and he were evicted from their quarters. He has found a home in Girardville and we are happy to have him as a friend and helper.
We wish him all God’s blessings as he reflects upon the past thirty years of priesthood.

Did anyone ever notice how few of the Sensational Seven had as good a second half of life? I see Harry these days as a tired, lonely guy whose wishes he could push re-wind. Ask Harry, Tommy Woods, GG, Jerry Heller, Len Woloson; given a chance to re-live those times they'd go back in a heartbeat. All of them came to see, some painfully, that the "station was the star" and it could thrive in those days almost regardless of who got plugged in. There are exceptions to the after-WARM realities, but not many. Those who were there in the 70's saw WARM become the corporate beast and it was a nasty place to work.

I see where my name was mentioned. I'll have everyone know that I had a teriffic career after WARM. Fran and I are still married after 46 years. We have a son a daughter, four grandchildren and one on the way. I still do part time news on WILK...I couldn't ask for a better life. I heard that one of our sensational seven said I was a loser. Far from it.
That person should take a good look in the mirror.

Tom,

You have the life many of us in current or post- radio days dream of - you have it all - including a WONDERFUL marriage! I've heard that statement "the station is the star" made by someone several times. And, if it is who I think it is he really DOES need to take a good long look in the mirror (he marriage is in the toilet by the way - maybe that's why he's giving YOU crap!).

Yonk, Your correct. Donovan was not on the air at NBC. A terrible "jock". Then the mightly GG started to give him alot of preasure, wwhich Donovan even mentoned on the air. He was gone as fast as Lenny W was let go when they found he was checking off spots and NOT playing them. Donovan played ALL the spots, but wasn't the magic that York thought he was and was out the door. Then came The Woody guy if my mind isn't too cloudy. There might have been someone in between such as Billy Kelly before being moved to noon to 3pm

A classic Jim Drunker was when he leaned on the old WARM News button they used for the beeps, such as "WARM News, Nanticoke Beep Beep Beep" during the entire McArthur Park song. It wasn't used when Father Drunker was there, but they never unhooked it until this happened. Guess it was on Charlie Morgan's 'Do do list' LOL

If you drove by WARM when Drunker was working, it was like a drive in in the aprking lot. It's amazing "GG" or someone never found out. Remember the sign at the WARM studio window "No visitors"

Since I did work there, it's kind of embarrassing to even ask, but what was the chronology of morning talent at WARM, let's say, from 1965 to 1975? Woloson was enormously popular, but got himself in trouble and was gone. Harry came, went, came back. GG did mornings for a while. Kim Martin(McClintock)was a real short-timer. And apparently Martin did not have a contract, or he wouldn't have been allowed to walk. Unless what I suspect is true, and stated before, that GG managed to work his contacts in Philly and get him an offer. I wouldn't rule that out, GG had lots of contacts in Philly, good friends in influential places. As an aside; contrary to what most believed, WARM was not big on contracts. Harry and Ron Allen were the only two that ever had them, and has been mentioned before, Ron's came late in his career with WARM.

Here's another one I have no answer for; what, if any, airshift did GG ever do on a regular basis? As long as I knew him, he was management, and outside of voicing an occasional promo, he did nothing on the air at all.

GG did 10m to 12p for years

By the way if you want the true WARM historian, the guy who loved it as a kid and got the break that made him a celebrity, It's Joe Shaver. Lives in Harvy's Lake. He lived it all, good and bad.

Shaver a "celebrity"? Does anyone know why GG fired him in 71. He was waking out the door when the sales manager (Jim Durkin I think) offered him a sales job at the bottom level.

Jim Pastrick --

>>>I'm surprised that anybody in a Byzantine seminary would be given the lattitude to do radio.<<<

Not much different than in a Roman sem. In my first year, this was the conversation:

Rector: "I turned my radio on and you were on it."
Me: "Yeah. I do radio. Got a couple of shifts in a local station."
Rector: "You should have asked."
Me: "No. I'm bumping 40 and I've done radio since I was a teen. I do radio. I get my stuff done and I like being on the air."
Rector: "Well, if you get a job at another station, you ask me first."
Me: "Maybe."

I did air for all three years I was there. Also had an amateur radio station in my room.

Good luck trying to ask GG or Len Woloson, they both passed away awhile ago.

Tommy Woods had and still has a great career after his WARM days. A true pro.
