Harvey/Thompson

Just wondering if anyone heard Fred Thompson filling in for Paul Harvey this morning/afternoon? He will, apparently, be taking over for Paul once he retires/dies.
Personally, IMHO, once Paul's gone so is the long running feature...for all intents and purposes...
If you heard the former Senator/actor today, what did you think?
Also, how many stations will drop ABC News once Paul's gone? (lots!)

I agree with you. I'm convinced that Paul Harvey will never die. After all, News and Comment has been running since 1951... that's before _my father_ was born. Imagine being the network suit who has to sell something else to affiliates. He might get better traction by selling a show composed of old fragments of tape melded together to make it sound like Harvey is actually still alive.

Paul Harvey was, in effect, the first podcaster.

Fred Thompson sounds like someone who's doing an immitation of another man, which... he is. The script from this morning (Saturday's) newscast was pure Harvey (If you haven't heard it, you can stream it at PaulHarvey.com), but his delivery was his own. That's not a knock against either, just a tribute to how Paul has basically defined an entire concept in radio. Many more years to him.

Once Paul Harvey finally dies, that's the end of the commentary feature.

Oh, ABC may hire someone to try to salvage a few stations, but otherwise, forget it.

It's just like "The Price Is Right" on TV. Paul Harvey and Bob Barker are soul mates. 80-something performers in an outdated format. Each pulls numbers due to older (I mean REALLY older!) demos and a curiosity from everyone else that these are the very last of a dying breed.

When they both go, that's the end of their broadcasts. Enjoy them while you can. Those two are the last of the last of the last.
Edited by HHH on 04/16/06 06:53 PM.

HHH - - Well said. Paul Harvey will be the end of an era. To try to receate that personna is an absolute attempt at futility. There will never again, in our lifetimes, be a broadcast newsman SO dominant and so influential.
