Has Jason Wolf been fired at WEEI?

Brilliant as Salt Lake City is so much like Boston - they are more clueless than I thought

tweet from radioinsight:

Boston Sports Media Watch reports Kevin Graham, PD of 1320 KFNZ Salt Lake City to replace Jason Wolfe at WEEI

via http://www.bostonsportsmedia.com a bio of Graham:

>>Kevin Graham is no stranger to Utah Sports Radio. One of the original architects of 1320 KFAN in 1996, Kevin returns to rebuild the heritage sports talker into the dominant sports radio station in the market. After leaving KFAN Kevin went on to a successful programming career assembling and building sports stations in Columbus, ESPN Radio Pittsburgh and New York City, as well as Detroit before returning to Salt Lake to host the highly popular Monson and Graham afternoon show for five years on the old 1280 The Zone.

He then went to Phoenix and left to do his own sports radio programming

Today’s news of Jason Wolfe comes at no surprise as “Big Brother” is taking more control.
In the coming months and into 2014 there will be major money decisions on the rest of the on-air talent. Its not only “Whose Next?” but “What’s Next?” for WEEI!

Could it be "ESPN 93-7", with the only local content being local play-by-play sports, ceding local sports talk to "The Sports Hub"??

And perhaps mostly or entirely syndicated content at WRKO-680??

As the ratings on 850 show, Boston does not care for national talk. They will stay local but on the cheap.

I don't believe anyone thinks that Wolfe made the right decision on D&C they should have been gone a LONG time ago!
I'm all for some "guy talk" and jokes on the morning show on a sports station because it's not all die hards that listen to that format during that day part but their constant political talk just got so old so fast that I stopped listening to sports radio in the morning all together and would listen to ANYTHING else until the mid day show came on and i'm not the only one who did so!
Add in John Dennis' numerous paranoid thoughts, public feuds with other talent in this market as well as one guy who is outside of the market and all over the most trivial of issues, let's also not forget their suspensions which happen with "edgy" jocks but when you get suspended for racial comments and have a pattern of doing so well then you're trouble for the sake of trouble and not worth keeping around!
If EEI wants to save itself they should dump D&C and bring Big O back, put him on in the morning, give him a solid Producer and a great sidekick and watch the station blossom!
I was one of those who thought it was time for Big O to be moved off afternoons, I'll admit it and my posts would bear that out but if you want to save WEEI you need to overhaul the station top to bottom and begin with the morning show.
How about Big O & Reusillo? You get the heritage sports talk guy, known in this market with the local guy who's been off doing ESPN radio for years with an eye on Reusillo eventually taking the helm of the morning show when Big O retires.
I'd also overhaul Mut & Merloni, Salk & Holley they're growing on me, i always like Holley and think Salk is a solid pro they've just needed some time to gel and as for Mike Adams, love Mikey but really it's time to get a younger voice in there who doesn't treat his show as a joke fest because night times IS when the die hards are listening!
I think Big Jim Murray who's doing nights in Atlanta right now would be PERFECT for that slot, die hard Boston fan, has the pipes, the knowledge and creativity to do a compelling night show.
Those are the changes I would make!

They're bringing in a guy who's built a sports station from the ground up, expect BIG changes at WEEI.
I don't however see them abandoning live local programming, even if he isn't from Boston if he's been in this business long enough he knows what this market is like sports wise and nationally syndicated programming a majority of the day won't fly and will just drive the ratings even more in favor of the Sports Hub.

The dumb asses at WRKO under Entercom - particularly Kahn and Wolf - together they may have had half a brain - should have keep Jerry Williams on as the station's Andy Rooney doing short commentaries just like the old curmageon Andy Rooney. No, they just threw the guy who made WRKO the then Number 1 Talk Station in the market on the street like yesterday's gar-
barge.

Maybe Howie Carr would have tried to nix it but Carr would have been just another back bench tabloid ink stained wretch without Jerry Williams.

As Arthur Miller so appropriately wrote in ' Death of A Salesman', " Respect must be paid..." and no Jerry Williams was no Willy Loman. Perhaps, Willy Highman...

I am reading over on the Patriots board that this new guy is a Jets fan who has had bad things to say about Brady and the Pats via Twitter.
If true, sounds like WEEI could have made a better hire..

ha, it'll be great listening to him explain away his tweets and how he really thinks the Pats are great, really great

RT @KevinGrahamKFAN: I despise the Cardinals but obviously hate the Pats more. Would be a big help to my Jets if Cards can hang on

Tweets from Howie: "Jason Wolf (sic), serial killer of Boston radio stations, will not be down for breakfast. No, Jason, I would not like my fries supersized...Now we really have a reason to celebrate tonight at the Barking Crab! See you there for 3-7 show, then party time!...A Gore Vidal memorial tribute to Jason Wolf (or is it Wolfe, who cares?): "No talent is not enough."
Twitter @howiecarrshow

Like the school yard bully he is, Howie enjoys nothing more than kicking someone when they are down. I couldn't believe when during the recent Michael Wiener scandal, which I found quite uninteresting, Carr kept demeaning NY Rep Jerry Nadler by calling fat and fatso.

I hardly know Jason Wolfe, never worked for him but I did make a nice piece of change via him years ago finding a home for the BC Hockey games he couldn't air on 850. Oddly enough, the last time I saw him was at RKO's 25th anniversary party as The Talk Station. A private event that Carr and Nancy aka Sandy tried to turn into a promotion for Carrs book.

Wolfe made some major blunders and it wasn't hard to program the station all the years when they hardly had a competitor but a 22 year run at the same outlet is quite an accomplishment.

He will be fine. PD's are like Political Campaign consultants win or loose they still seem to get work.

Agreed. Wouldn't worry too much about his future to make a living in this business.

I'm sure most of the posters here have successfully managed a two-station 40-person staff
in the #10 market on the daily basis during the course of their professional careers.

Anyone who thinks Jason Wolfe was calling the shots on major talent is clueless.

As for Mr. Carr, there seems to be reason to question where the money goes from his most recent book (and by book I mean the movie script he's been hawking)

Clearly the sources for much of it are people who would not be allowed to sell their story for a profit. Howie is allowed to make a profit telling the stories these people are not allowed to profit from telling.

Howie is telling their stories. And getting paid for telling the stories they told him but from which they can't profit from telling.

Follow the money.

I think Jason did have that power at one time but it was muted in the past few years.

Now why does Julie still have a job?

From what I'm told, Julie can sell and can motivate others to sell because they want to sell for her, and is rather well liked for a broadcast executive.

A former insider said they let her keep her Boston market manager title and promised not to burn her publicly to keep her and made Brown New England Market Manager and gave him the managerial responsibilities. Or maybe it was the other way around.

Here's a re-edited version of the above:

From what I'm told, Julie can sell by making people want to buy and can motivate others to sell because they want to sell for her, is rather well liked for a broadcast executive and pretty smart.

A former insider said they put Brownin as Market Manager but took great pains to make sure she stayed and not with a face saver job but because she is good at the sales thing.

And sales with that company's facilities is not easy; it's the worst set of stations of the major market players, which also includes CBS, Greater Media and CC.

Remember, Entercom bought what CBS didn't want during a forced divestiture and ended up with two AMs, which even at 50K directional in the mid 90s had a limited life expectancy, and two rim-shot FMs while CBS kept 'BMX, the former FM side of RKO which is now competitor BZ-FM.

Don't worry D&C fans--Entercom has got their back!

Right.

>>Callahan, a Herald sports columnist, said Entercom Boston general manager Jeff Brown told him and Kirk Minihane, who was added to the morning show in February, that “we’re going nowhere.”

That's the trouble. They're going nowhere in the ratings.

>>both Dennis and Callahan have a year remaining on their contracts and the station’s move last February to dump longtime afternoon drive host Glenn Ordway didn’t do anything to improve numbers.

So for those gleeful that you may be seeing the end of D&C and Howie...both shows have
a year left on their contracts, so...
