Has the end finally come for............

Art Steinberg at Q106? He's been removed from the web site. I tried listening yesterday, but it wasn't his usual time. BTW, check out their web site, www.theqrocks.com, it looks as though 2nd Grade Steve and his classmates are the ones doing the updates these days! There really is no excuse for spelliing errors. Proof read your work! Oh, so that I don't get flamed for only bashing a Nassau station, Clear Channel sucks!

Too bad, a loss for the company and for listeners who have listened to Art on the Q for YEARS! He left to move to Massachusetts.

TOLD YA SO

I tried to tell you there was a big change coming...I hinted, I dang near gave up the ghost, but did you listen? No, Did you even bother to respond? No.
Art leaving the Upper Valley is a major event. Like him or not. Like the Q or not...

Maybe THIS time, you will listen...here comes the hint:

This is not the ONLY big change coming....

'nuff said

Hey, I'm just keepin an eye...

You're right, after 114 years with the same station it is noteworthy that he's gone now. To who I'm not sure. As a former client of Q106 it's a good sign. I never had a good experience when dealing with the guy. He did an awful remote for me and his production was subpar in my opinion. He seemed angry whenever someone didn't agree with his work or ideas. How did he manage to hang for so long? Did he have naked pictures of $hapiro or what? He probably had a few shots of $hapiro rolling around in all the cash he hoodwinked out of Nassau.(that's kind of a funny visual) Now if they would just cut Imus loose and put a local show on that's actually good. Not like the Deuce and half over at KIXX. We need a good local morning show. Right now there just isn't one. Why don't they build a Classic Rock morning show around Garrett? He must be dying on the blue hair station. I'll never forget his prank call to 99 Rock when he had that kid lowering the power and stuff!

Is he going to another station in Mass??? He's been at the Q since the 80's when they were CHR.

Art

Art deserves more respect than given on this board. He is the last of the old generation; the last one that reflected back when Q106 was a great station, with great dj's that lived for that station. When you think Q106 jocks, you think Guy Dark, Scott Antovitch, Tom Hoytt, Ken & Christy and you think of Art. Now, you "youngsters" who like think that it's time to "get rid of the old and bring in the new" probably don't agree with this, and I could care less.

Yes, he leaving Q106 is a major event for all of those who grew up with him on the radio. 20 years is a long time! Think of it this way. You take a 20 year old man who listened to him when they were playing Def Lep in the 80's STILL listened to him now playing Def Lep! There is something to be said about keeping a heritage jock on the air.

Besides his on-air work, he did fantastic production for the station and it's clients alike.

His duties will be sorely missed and I wish him well.

Can you shed some light on Scott Antonivch? I heard that he is now working at WKNE doing promotions? Do you have any info on this?

YOU HAD ME UP UNTIL THE END

I got to this line, and as I read, I honestly became nostalgic, UNTIL you lumped TOM HOYTT into the ranks of Guy, Scott, and Ken...

"back when Q106 was a great station, with great dj's that
lived for that station. When you think Q106 jocks, you
think Guy Dark, Scott Antovitch, Tom Hoytt, Ken & Christy
and you think of Art."

Are you kidding? That popmus putz is in no way a part of the Q-106 Hall of Fame. He tried to be an imus wanna be when he board opted...trying hard to be sharp tounged...he ended up sounding sad. I ask again: Are you kidding? When he walks in a room, he waits for the hush as people realize he is there...looks around for people to be in awe...really, it happens. I've been there. Hey Tom-The awe is only in your head when you look in the mirror.

The point, however, of the passage is true. Art was the last of the real Q-106 Superstar DJ's...the guys that were cool by just being there...even in the past WKRP days, these guys worked for about 15k a year, lived like rock stars and loved it!!! You did miss a couple, Dave Aston and Wally Wilcox...

It doesn't matter what you think of Art, personally or professionally. He loved WHDQ. He is a true Q Hall of Famer..The real deal.

As for Scott, I beleive he is down at KNE...I saw his name on the website a while ago....

Call WKNE and ask. Report back to us when you're done.

I worked with Art for five years and I personally thought he was a good guy that always did solid production, and I enjoyed listening to him on the air. I'm sorry to see him go. Best of luck to Art. He will be missed in the world of UV radio.

Sorry to hear that you thought I sucked. All I ask is that in the future when you comment about that fact that I sucked please spell my name correctly..there is only one "T" in Hoyt.....thanks.

Re: YOU HAD ME UP UNTIL THE END

What is it about the small markets that cause folks to take things personally? The phrase "TOM SUCKS" was NEVER used, nor implied. At least in this forum. All that was referenced to was that Tom Hoyt (with 1 "T") isn't nearly as talented as he finds himself. Do not misread that is "sucking" or even not talented. He is quite capable. It was mearly a comment on the way he carries himself, and how many folks may have found his on-air presence.

And there was no offense meant by leaving him off the Q Hall of Fame list...just that there were many moew talented people who earned their way.

Geesh, lighten up..take things for what they are worth...in this case, just some old fool keepin an eye on the radio!!!

You are correct, you never said I sucked (by the way it's me Tom Hoyt...home phone is 298-7976 is you want to discuss it) what you did say was:

I guess I thought the "popmus putz" part implied you thought I sucked (my bad!). All I know is that when I started for Dynacom is November of 1984 they had just bought WECM/WTSV for $600,000. As an employee I saw my main job function doing everything possible to increase that investment. A few years after I left they sold to Nassau for $36 million....'nuff said !

Re: Upon further review

I think my point is made about people taking things personally...

The deal is: ART, GOOD LUCK!! YOU HAVE WORKED HARD IN A BUSINESS THAT OFTEN FORGETS TO SAY THANK YOU... VERBALLY OR WITH A BIG FAT PAYCHECK!! AS SOMEONE WHO HAS LISTENED TO YOU FOR 20 YEARS, THANK YOU.

WHAT?? I cant even follow the point??????

Re: Upon further review

Well, the knives are out now. Yes, Tom's style may have rubbed some the wrong way but it is undisputable fact that Tom Hoyt was a very important part of Q106 history. Tom was a personality and not a liner card reader, and he played up the "personality" thing to its fullest extent. There's not enough of that in radio today, and there are ways of doing it without being overbearing.

Tom Hoyt was an "acquired taste" but I always enjoyed his stewardship of Imus (and his days doing weather for now-defunct News 31).

Seriously, with the venom being spewed on this board, you'd think Hoyt poured sugar in all your gas tanks. The man hasn't been on the air regularly in years. It's over. Get over it. All the best to Tom.

Now that Art is gone, all Nassau needs to do is put Imus on another station (the Wolf) and re-brand Q106 as The Hawk or Frank. Maybe it's time.

Re: Upon further review

You may be right. Remember all of the Hall of Famers started in 'old school' radio. They all paid their dues. I believe Tom, Art, and Scott all started as board ops at 1 time or another. They had the passion for radio. Its good to hear that Scott Antonivoch made his way to Keene. I think he probably fits Top 40 better than Classic Rock...although he also did well on the Oldies format. Although I havent heard him on the air.....and he doesnt appear on the wkne website.

Tom saw the light sooner than the others. Do you think Tom misses broadcasting? Probably not. He is making allot more $ at Mascoma Bank. He got out of WNNE before they were defunct. Tom made an very smart move when he did...and he is much richer for it.

Art should have left the area LONG ago. He could have built a better career in a larger market. He does have production skills. I would love to see Art start his own imaging/production business. It isnt hard with computers these days.

Guy Dark is still rockin' and always will. That dude will die with a mic in his hands. Of course, he may be the most successfull out of all the Q106 Hall of Fame guys. He certainly has been in some impressive markets.

Ted Bilodeau was left out of the Hall of Fame mentions. 80's Ted Bilodeau is worth a mention. 90's Ted Bilodeau was a corporate 'yes' man. His agreement with Shapiro to take a percentage of 'saved' promotion budget at the end of the year is what put Q106 on the road to the dump.

Leif, Brian, and the latest class...lack the 'fun' wildness the other guys had. Yes, Leif knows allot about the music....but he just didnt have the personality to go along with it. Brian is the same. It seems like they were afraid to say or do something someone wouldnt like to hear. Scott Antonivoch was known for being racy, wild, and spontaneous. 80's Art as well. These guys knew how to be more than just musical knowledge databases. Yeah, maybe it is time to have Q106 be a Jack, Mike, or whatever. Either that....or get talent that can surprise the audience a little. There is allot more to life than music knowledge and liner cards.

I agree that the "latest class" lack in the 'wildeness' department, but look at how the Q106 format/presenation changed over the past 20 years. Classic Rock is simply a much more laid back format. I think Doug Daniels tried to fuse the two a little bit but was hit or miss, but when he was on he was a lot of fun. I think that rubbed off on some of the other jocks like Leif and even Art a little when they were all there. If they weren't wild, there was at least an iota of passion there, now even that's gone from the current lineup. A few years ago they were in good position to try to improve Q106 but it never happened. Both Doug and Leif have moved onto bigger markets like them or not, not sure what's in store for Art but hopefully he can find something.

RIP, WHDQ. 20 years is very respectable in a small market in this day and age, but it's time.

ITS NOT OVER YET

I don't disagree that times have changed, not only in the jocks of the Q, but the format itself. Back in the day, at least at the Q, there was less liner cards etc, prior to selector, who didn't dig a little deeper into the 3x5 cards in the power rotation...Paly a request for a free pizza or give a shout-out for a free...nevermind....There was that sense of wild, becuase they were. They had to be creative and fun or they were dead in the water!

I don't think the Q is dead, nor the format...Q-106 is so in the minds and the hearts of anyone 18+ that it will only take some modifications to breath again... Get the music right, get original jocks, and get away from liner cards...you have something. Classic Rock with a lean on 80's hair bands and power ballads, southern rock mixed in, and you in the money. The teens who listened to Brad, Jennifer, Wally, Dave, Guy, Art, Ken and everyone else are still here. They remember those days...

Q-106 is light years from the little white building on Washington St...but the myth still lives...

Were they ever Q-106 from that building? I recall them doing AOR as "The Mountain" in the early-mid 80s from that dump, but I thought Q-106 didn't come until they'd moved.

Re: ITS NOT OVER YET

After the station was sold to Dynacom, it operated from Washington Street before the current building was constructed.

In the fuss about Tom - it's been forgotten what a solid sportscaster he was. With Bob Lipman, he did a kick ass job covering sports in the Connecticut River Valley.

Unlike many of today's liner card readers, Tom was a real broadcaster. Salut!

It was over for FUVMI long ago......

Leave it to FUVMI to imply that he's due some sort of gratitude or special thanks for HIS efforts. Here's a quote from one of his posts.

"As an employee I saw my main job function doing everything possible to increase that investment. A few years after I left they sold to Nassau for $36 million....'nuff said "

Hey if it wasn't for FUVMI, the largest ego to ever hit the UV, the stations wouldn't have been worth half of the untold millions $hapiro fleeced out of Nassau. Get over yourself FUVMI. Your voice has always been a cue for me to change the station. It was always all about Tom when he was on. Big fish, very small pond. Remember, fish swim in their own poo!

Here's another quote, this time from a later quote in the thread.

"Tom saw the light sooner than the others. Do you think Tom misses broadcasting? Probably not. He is making allot more $ at Mascoma Bank. He got out of WNNE before they were defunct. Tom made an very smart move when he did...and he is much richer for it."

Tom's making more money at Mascoma for sure, but not a tremendous amount more. We all know that his real money comes from the bank account that he married! It's clear that Tom still has a need for attention that's not being met at his great gig at Mascoma.

The only person who really deserves any credit is the broker that got the schmuck from Nassau to agree to that price! Those stations were on shaky ground before the sale, and judging by the way they sound now, not much has improved. If only you could all be more like Cat Country! Geez I crack myself up!
