Lock time on HD sub-channels does not bother me if I am turning it to the station I want to listen to and leaving it there. However it can be a little annoying if I want to quickly scan for stations in a limited time in a new city but that is rare.
I have found no delay when switching from a station's HD1,2,3, back and forth all day.
Those delays I keep hearing about only seem to happen in places that have more than one station.
Once locked onto a digital channel, you should be able to switch back and forth, to your heart's content. If you change the frequency, it has to store up a buffer, so there's a delay. You don't notice it on HD1 because the analog signal is delayed too.

The delay comes when you tune directly into an HD-2, from another station, not the same station's HD-1. I don't experience any delay switching from HD-1 to HD-2. In my case, since the only programming I am interested in comes on HD-2's from different stations, I experience the lock time delay every time I change from a station with an HD-2 on my preset to another station with an HD-2 on my preset. The HD-1 formats of the stations are of absolutely no interest to me.
