HD Radio in NYC Thread

Unless WQHT 97.1 adds an HD3, I believe it is very unlikely that they will be broadcasting classic hip hop on HD. That is due to the fact that the HD2 is leased to HumDesi radio, which broadcasts to the Indian community. Emmis or any other major broadcaster would probably be happy at this point if they can get some steady revenue from an HD2 in a lease, rather than running their own broadcast with no commercials.
The format may be suitable for WWPR 105.1, if their HD2 is brought back. But Clear Channel tends to rebroadcast channels from IHeartRadio on the HD2's, and it does not have one for classic hip hop.
As I am not familiar with the genre, does WWPR Power 105.1 play a fair amount of older hip hop?

I forgot the HD-2 was leased so, yep, not gonna happen unless Emmis does an HD-3, which I highly doubt.

I don't listen that much to Power, but they do stand out for playing more recurrents (including older hip-hop) than Hot 97 does. Though eventually, as more of the youth continues to bolt from terrestrial radio, this COULD be a possible format on standard FM figuring that the demographics for the "old skool" are from their late 30's into the mid 60's? Hip-hop has certainly made it into the "oldies" per se and the older crowd will still listen to FM.

Could be a possibility down the road.

Power 105.1 for the most part does not play classic hip, hop although I suppose it depends on what you define as "classic hip, hop. Let's just say you wouldn't hear the Sugar Hill Gang or Curtis Blow on Power although you may hear some things from the 90's on rare occassions.
Power leans older than Hot but definitely far from classic hip, hop.

I suppose the oldest Power 105.1 goes are tracks from Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back". That's about as classic as they go I believe, but I have heard 90's stuff. Still classics. :)

I would like to hear a full blown soulful disco format on wbls hd-2.
Interesting concept.

Except I don't see the correlation between Soul and Disco, unless they are both from predominatly black artists.

I see Soul taking a back seat when disco took off.

True disco, 120 bpm, did not last all that long.

WBLS HD2 has always been a rebroadcast of sister station WLIB 1190 AM.
As WLIB plays plenty of music, it seems worthwhile to offer a means to hear it clearly over the air, day and night.
Unless WBLS' management wants to start an HD3, this rebroadcast seems to be a sensible use for WBLS HD2.

Brooklyndon, did you mean soulful house? That's where the correlation would be because you do have artists such as Inaya Day and Barbara Tucker that are in that genre.

I knew I should have stepped into this first, since I have an HD Radio for a long time, and I can consider myself an "HD Radio veteran" ;D! I agree on WLIB staying on 107.5 HD2. I think the following HD channels should not be touched:
92.3, 93.9, 95.5, 98.7, 101.1, 102.7, 104.3, 105.9, and 107.5.
93.1, 96.3, and 101.9 are not in HD, so I won't comment on them.
Nash FM should start to get some syndicated country that is not much interfering with the main format.
La Mega should get another Spanish format, not present in the NY market, like Salsa for example.
Either Z100 or KTU's HD2 get Club Phusion.
Any CC station, Lite in my opinion, should get WOR AM.
Lite needs the HD2 changed back to Classic Lite, or a WFEZ Miami like HD2 channel.
Once again, this is not important to anyone because no one listens to HD Radio!

Just a question. Why would any AM station run HD? I can understand (maybe) an FM to run the HD2 and or HD3, but what is the benefit of IBOC to an AM?

IBOC does seem to give an AM signal a more FM-like sound. It also provides a capability to broadcast in stereo.
But these advantages are probably more significant for stations that are broadcasting music. And of course most AM stations offer programming that is primarily talk, in mono.
Additional issues are that outside of cars, there are few receivers available with AM HD, and that it interferes with weak signals on adjacent frequencies. So DXers tend to strongly dislike AM HD. In addition, many AM stations (though not in NYC) now rebroadcast their programming on FM translators.
But IMHO, an AM station such as WCBS 880 with a strong signal does sound somewhat cleaner in HD.
BTW, with regard to a post above, WCBS AM is still broadcasting in HD.

How far south could WCBS and WFAN have solid HD coverage?

(I am figuring into Southern Monmouth County before it starts to break up.)

I was hoping to get up there and "field test" for myself, but it doesn't look as though that will happen before the summer and they may not be around by then.

WFAN AM dropped HD last year, when they started simulcasting on FM. That is fine with me, as it is now possible once again to receive WSM 650 AM at night. When WFAN was running IBOC, this was out of the question, due to interference.
I do not know how far south WCBS AM can be reliably received in HD. But the range for AM HD seems to be considerably less than the analog signal. At night I can often receive WBZ 1030 AM from Boston like a local station. But it has never come in with an HD signal, despite several attempts and a few flashes of the HD icon on my receiver.

Last October on my trip to Maryland I was able to receive 660, 880 and 1010 all in HD at night. The location was Easton to be exact. So it appears to go quite a good distance. During the day I was able to pick up HD at around exit 5 On NJTP on 660.

WABC dropped HD a long time ago ..
They are on WPLJ's HD3 now ..

It sounds as though when I do get back up there, there won't be any iBoc, left.

WFLA, down here, still uses it during the day only. But they stopped ID-ing it some time ago. Possibly when they dropped it at night.
