HD Radio just got yet another sale!

Usually the headphone cable goes first before the jack for me, but I have had 1/8" TRS jacks go bad on my Sangean (non-HD) portables. They can be replaced fairly easily on these units. The ultimate connector? A mini TNC perhaps, but the cost would be prohibitive.

My Insigina loses it charge just sitting! My 1962 Zenith 'portable' doesn't do that.

My now non-working Directed Electronics (DICE) automotive add-on tuner unit is now dead locked up with no audio;
I'm sure that its death is under 2 years had something to do with the fact that I could make toast on the tuner box portion it was so damn hot. DICE will not respond to my requests for technical assistance or a replacement unit.

The DICE add-on tuner DID have good selectivity, but horrible distortion from the RCA jacks, and excessive heat. The DICE HD unit would not get and HD lock on any AM station if I had any switching power supply plugged into my cigarette lighter (cellphone charger or XM power plug)! AM frequency response was chopped at about 4KHz analog too, which stunk up the place.

IF DICE would have done a 2nd generation 'FIX' based on my comments, it could have been a great unit, but my guess is that they gave up.

Funny you mention the switching power supply in the cigarette lighter, because any cell phone charger plugged up in my car cuts FM HD reception by about half. But then it also interferes noticeably with analog FM, too.

That DICE add-on was first gen equipment right? HD radios now aren't quite so hot (the old Sony excepted). Any first generation hardware is bound to have problems, especially the newer it is. I try to avoid buying anything that's brand spanking new tech because they tend to have growing pains.

Guess what? I just bought another Sony XDR-F1HD. It's my second one. I was reading something about Sony may be discontinuing the HD tuner, so I bought another XDR-F1HD. This is more of how well it performed on both AM and FM on analog signals rather than to receive HD. If Sony did stop making this tuner, will there be a new HD tuner to replace it? I don't know. Probably not. I don't see it in the Sonystyle website.

Sony should continue to produce the tuner, perhaps with an added forced analog function and just market it as a killer AM/FM tuner with HD mentioned in small print as a bonus feature. Either that or they should introduce a new analog-only tuner using the existing digital signal processing to improve reception of noisy and weak stations as in the F1HD. This is a killer tuner and a steal for under $90, whether or not HD is included.

If Sony would dump the HD-AM and add their old Sony AM Stereo C-Quam chipset, or use DSP to decode it with noise-blanking, widen the AM bandwidth, add an ANALOG only switch, and add a cooling fan, THEN I'll buy a pair of them!
