HD Radio updates only

Speaking of KHMX, they had a good hour of dead air when I was flipping around presets at lunch. The other Audacy properties were all on the air.

I noticed at least 10 minutes of dead air on Sunday night, as well. RDS and HD info was still updating song info, etc correctly during the dead air. Wonder what’s going on there…

RDS can be different from what is being transmitted in some odd ways.

I haven’t checked this lately, but for a lengthy time KUHF HD-2 had an interesting problem with its musical readouts. The station uses the Classical 24 service on its HD-2, and the radio display shows the name, composer, and performer of the various works, as provided by the syndicated feed.

From 10am to noon the station breaks away from Classical 24 and airs Performance Today. However, during those two hours, the display would continue to show whatever was being played on the Classical 24 feed. Very odd, as it revealed the data was essentially tied to Classical 24, regardless of what was actually being aired.

Apparently HD originated program info is called PAD, or Program Associated Data.

I've seen that RDS anomaly happen on music stations that run major league sports. My guess is since they can't run the sports on their stream, they just feed the stream the regular music log programming and the serial data feed from that feeds the RDS encoder.

RDS is great and not so great. PAD is awesome but Artist Experience graphics not so great for Spanish radio and its service fees.
We use TRE from BE. Total Radio Expericience app to send data to FM and HD Radio.

RDS is for FM. Its data is on the carrier signal, its injected about 4 to 6%. Some of yall experience issues with song and artist names incomplete or not showing, its probably due to the signal and your tuner not able to decode it due to low signal incomplete data.

To send this data , it starts from the automation , TRE sends its song data to either a exciter, a processor, or an external rds encoder. Its all about routing the data to an IP and when programing changes from Automation to sports, or whatever change, RDS breaks or continues with data sent from automation or not. Especially during Network show, the Songs they play from their automation at another market , well that data doesnt connect to the local rds encoders. Managing that takes scheduling routing network paths over wan, well you get the idea, not going to do that. When network shows go on air, we simply run a scheduled message like “Estas Escuchando Show”. We also sell the sponsorship. During spot breaks you probably see a Lawyer name and phone number LOL about being in a wreck.

Same issue with PAD which is the RDS version of HD Radio. It has a lot more data, Artisit Experience for Album Display and Station Logos.

Interesting new article about Visual Displays.
