HD Radio updates

It seems to me to be a waste of broadcast spectrum to use an HD subchannel as a primary feed for a translator. The whole idea of HD subchannels is to increase choice and variety. Sadly, this has not been the case, at least in the Houston market. Plus, you have the chicken and the egg analogy, because there are very few radios out there that are HD-capable. When KTRU sold their license to University of Houston, which in turn laundered it to KSBJ, they were diverted to an HD subcarrier. For a time, they were giving radios away so people could listen to them.

Is HD something ahead of its time, or just a booster shot for FM, which really doesn't need a booster shot in the first place? I think a more useful use of the Commission's limited resources is an expansion of the FM broadcast band. After all, if there is one thing that Houston desperately needs, it's room for more Mexican translators.

If by Mexican you mean Regional Mexican music then let me inform you there are only 2. La Grande 104.5

And (Now) La Caliente DIGITAL 102.5

If Mexico were to ever license translators, they would all be, naturally, in Mexico. "Mexico" is a country, not a format.

KOVE is over 50% regional Mexican. The music on KLTN is 100% regional Mexican.

98-5 and 107-9 are both regional Mexican 100%.

Indeed. The formats of radio in Mexico are as varied as they are north of the border. Regional Mexican is but one of them. But not all Hispanic translators or LPFM stations are Regional Mexican. With regard to Tejano, I don't think any station in the Houston market broadcasts in that format. Although supposedly Univision was using one of their HD subchannels on 102.9 (ex KQUE) to rebroadcast Vibe 107.5 San Antonio. But with HD Radio, we're back to the chicken and the egg. If the listeners were there, then broadcasters would program real variety, but without real variety, the listeners won't tune-in. At some point, the market will be appropriately saturated with HD receivers, but that won't be this year. Probably not next year, either.

I was referring to the translators, we I my have 2 translators with regional Mexican music is what I meant.
Those 2 stations you mentioned don’t even have originating stations unless 880 recently went back to 102.5. I can’t really keep up with that

That didn't last long. At least KTHT HD has song info again

Which means they are clearly operating outside compliance. Will the Commission do anything about it? Doubtful. The FCC is no longer proactive, and the translator boondoggle in Houston has become a political issue.

How is it political?????
Who owns the translators? What is the programming on the translators? If the translators aren't where they are supposed to be, or operating at the power they are authorized, why isn't anything being done? Yes, it is a political issue.

KUHF HD2 doesn’t have any text. I don’t know if I had posted but KKHH HD2 hasn’t had text for probably close to a month now.

Edit: KUHF HD2 has text again

KUHF HD-2 runs the Classical 24 feed for most of its schedule, and the text display will show the musical works being broadcast on that service. But the text has a quirk: Weekdays the HD-2 breaks away between 10am and noon to run the syndicated Performance Today. However the text display continues to show whatever is being broadcast by the Classical 24 feed during that time. So the text is directly tied to Classical 24 and not any alternate programming that might be running on the HD-2.🤔🙄

I was hearing classical music when there was no text at all. I don’t know when it started but it came back quickly after I first saw it

Most likely temporary but KQBT HD is off. If anyone has a radio that can set clock time over RDS but HD takes over. Now is the time to get it set.

I find The buzz and Sunny the most reliable RDS clock time. 96.5 and 100.3 are a hour behind.

iHeart stations seem to do well. I usually use Sunny or The Beat because it’s correct and usually I can get it weak enough for HD to not flash. 93.3 has clock time but it’s minutes off

I had been using kXBJ they had good clock time. For a long time it has been off. Don't count on air one. It set mine back to 12:00am.
