I was gonna ask the same thing...of course being from an era when I was amazed when cart machines were introduced...please explain how one would receive HD...is this totally new technology that is going to require special receivers, etc. Is this the radio industries answer to Sat radio??? Someone explain this whole concept to this radio geezer.

This is new technology that will require a new receiver. The digital signal is contained within the bandwidth of the analog signal. FM multipath will not be an issue with the digital signal, until it gets too weak then simply drops off the cliff. The idea is that it will revert to the analog signal when that happens. There is also the possibility of splitting the digital channel into additional channels by lowering the bit rate of the primary channel.

In terms of it competeing with satellite radio, digital will do nothing to change the content or spot load of the analog station. The additional split off channels may have some unique programming and low spot loads starting out, but the licensees will eventually start selling that inventory as well, and programming more narrowly as listenership builds.

Putting the digital signal on is a very expensive and somewhat complicated thing to do. Return on investment is years away and the audio quality will be lower than your MP3 player can produce.
