heard they blew up kbsg.

Pretty sure the station now running on auto-pilot. Silent segues in all the talk spots, and sweepers/jingles between all other songs.

Good luck, team. Hope you all land on your feet. Some good folks there....

This just blows donkey snot. If I wanted to listen to KIRO I would switch to 710. What a waste of an FM frequency.

From the Bonneville website...
Thank you for your interest in B97.3 KBSG. By listening to the station, you know by now that we made some changes to our programming. Please take a minute and read below. I sincerely hope this will answer your questions and address your concerns.

First and foremost, thank you for listening to and loyally supporting KBSG through the years. I am especially grateful to the KBSG staff, and very proud of the fine work they have done for this community.

We know there are a significant number of radio listeners who use FM on a daily basis, but may visit the AM dial only sporadically. In addition, we also know that as the music radio landscape has become more and more fragmented, it's clear that there will be a limited available audience for KBSG's music programming. Puget Sound listeners have shown great support for the quality news and stimulating talk on 710 KIRO. This is why KIRO has been a perennial audience leader in the region.

We believe we can best serve Puget Sound Residents by instead offering News Talk 710 KIRO's rich mix of news, local talk, public affairs, and community service on 97.3 FM.

Therefore, we will begin simulcasting KIRO on FM 97.3 and AM 710 beginning at 5am, Tuesday, August 12th.

Again, thank you for being a loyal KBSG listener. I hope you continue to listen to the KIRO programming on 97.3 FM.

Sincerely,

Carl Gardner
Vice President and Market Manager
Bonneville Seattle

Obviously KJR to benefit from this...and it makes sense because very few markets have two classic hits stations battling each other like we have here. Would LOVE to see KJR ratchet it up a bit and mix some of their heritage with the "classic hits" positioning now that they don't have to worry about competitor counter-programming against them.

The 2 stations aren't even close to the same format! KJR is the original rock based, more hit oriented version of Classic Rock and KBSG is updated Oldies.

and you think all the people who prefer KBSG to all other music choices are going to make that distinction? You also think Jay's not going to react to the market changes? When KLSY shot their feet off with a Magnum pistol ... you think people preferred to just shut off their radio rather than gravitate to choices like STAR? (insert big-time annoying teen-age eye roll here...)

Silent segues

I believe these are known as "cold segs" or "hard segs" in the business...

Bonny and Cox have simulcasted a lot of their AM stations on FM. It's a growing trend that I wouldn't be surprised to see continue by CBS, CC et al...

So riddle me this Batman...what's to become of KJR AM now that KIRO is poised to be the big dog in sports?
KIRO's got the better signal and football and baseball franchises. Bring back the sports babe!

Yes, but no nasty IBOC on FM... :)

I think people who are fans of the Beach Boys, Supremes, Monkees and Herman's Hermits will only tolerate KJR to hear the Beatles and Stones.

This will be the second time 710 KIRO has taken the simulcast route. If I recall, back in the days when Bonneville also owned KIRO-TV and KSEA (now The Wolf under Entercom) they flipped KSEA from easy listening to simulcasting Newsradio 710 on 100.7, and ultimately created the KIRO News Network - which didn't last long. Then came "The Buzz"...and then the sale to that other company.

BTW: Their FAQ on mynorthwest.com says that Mariners games next season will be on the AM side only, while newstalk will continue as normal on FM and the internet feed.

I assume Bonneville still has the rights to KIRO-FM as calls. If they don't I'm sure they could buy them back. If so, this will be the third time the calls will be in the market. 1948-1967, 1992-1997 were the previous periods.

i suppose now that since there will be a simulcast on 97.3, that means that AT40 (the 70's) will be off as well. could they maybe go to KJR?

That would be a homecoming (sort of), as KJR-AM ran AT40 for years...

Just when I think a radio station finally gets it's itshay together....KABOOM!!! It NEVER fails....

20 years is a damn good run for any radio station and I'm surprised KBSG lasted that long. And I think KJR-FM staffers will be partying hard tonight.

But news/talk on FM historically in Seattle has never been too successful. Of course, we're talking about the old KIRO-FM, on 100.7, later KQBZ. I'm not sure if this run of KIRO-FM is going to last any longer than the old one. Of course when the first KIRO-FM came about, there were very few news talkers on FM in the US. There's a lot more now. Only time will tell if Seattle really wants it now or if it wants it's tunes back....

The only FM that will feel any pinch from this will be KUOW. But if it does take off, could 101.5 become KOMO-FM?

Unfortunately, I saw this coming a mile away. This will give Entercom more leverage in the market as I'll bet they will garner a 6 share with one product to sell. And in this cost-cutting environment, every dollar counts. Let's hope the FM doesn't cannibalize the AM. I think what will happen is that the reach and cume will get huge as the FM taps into the younger set, 25-44 adults.

As for B97, I would strongly suggest rimshot station KFMY, 97.7, takes over all of the imaging, logo, call letters and other materials and becomes B97, Tacoma-Aberdeen.

It really is the death of Tacoma's KNBQ for us old timers....and it's sad, so it would be great to ressurect the format on KFMY, 97.7 Mhz, which you can now receive in Seattle. Here's 97.7's signal coverage:

Except it's Bonnevile - not Entercom - that now owns KIRO and the late KBSG.

correct. annopuncement posted on their website.
KIRO-AM simulcast to begin 8/12.

You can bet the farm that they're dancing the jig at 351 Elliott Avenue and over at the Palace - this move is just one more nail in the AM 1000 coffin.
