Is that too new or being an ochestra not considered Big Band ? I'm guessing, it can't be too recent, Mr. Miller was killed in WWII.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra still exists. http://www.glennmillerorchestra.com/ They even released a CD about 10 years ago that had Pensylvania 6-5000 on it. A lot of other people have done cover versions, and the song is frequently played by modern big bands. Some songs live on, mostly because they were good tunes. This is one of them.

You can usually tell by the quality of the recording if it is an original. They were pretty good for their time, but the newer recordings usually have much wider frequency response and much lower noise. Some of the recordings made in the 1950’s (in stereo) are truly amazing sounding.
Back in the 1980’s, there was even a disco version of Pennsylvania 6-5000, as well as many other familiar big band songs. In fact Larry Elgart did a whole series of disks called "Hooked On...." There was "Hooked on Swing," "Hooked on Big Bands," "Hooked on Classics," and others. They became reasonably popular.
There are even a lot of big bands still playing. Out here in East Texas, I've discovered four of them whose members live within the sound of our FM signal. That surprised even me.
