HELP WANTED -- News -- Immediate Opening -- GOOD station, GOOD company

"Helped" is the relative term here. She didn't plot or scheme per se. She like others, thought what they were doing was for the good of the country. How many boomers who fought the establishment back in the 60's became part of it in the 70's and 80's? About 95 percent of them. I won't even get into John Dean. We all make mistakes. Even Ted Kennedy later admitted that Gerald Ford issuing a full pardon to Richard Nixon for his wrongdoings was the right thing to do for the country at the time.

I can see why Teddy Kennedy likes the idea of pardons. You never know when or some other Kennedy is going to need one.
Besides, Nixon and the Kennedys were cohorts in red-baiting and black-listing. Jack supported McCarthy. Bobby worked for him. Old Joe backed him with cash. And Tricky Dick did the same act.
And, speaking of Kennedys, let's not add Maria Schriver as a role model for women in broadcasting.

The Baby Boomers you are thinking of were always "straights." Short hair. Juice freaks. Frat rats and sorority bitches. Jocks and cheerleaders. Listened to AM Top40 and bubblegum music. Young Republicans. Campus Crusade for Christ. ROTC pukes.
How do you know what Diane Sawyer thought. I don't but the people like her I did know were concerned only about looking good, fitting in and getting ahead.
Anybody who never inhaled grass or tear gas back then was a drone. They are the ones who became part of the establishment - heck, they were always part of the establishment. And much as they like to wave the flag, such people care about nothing but themselves.

And because Nixon did not go to jail, we now have Bush - and a bunch of former Nixon lackeys - who still think the president and those who work for him are above the law. Thank you, Jerry Ford. A dumb jock from a district dominated by the Dutch Reform Church and Amway.

They were not always "straights" and you know it. The hippies-turned-yuppies turned every much bit of the establishment as their 'square' counterparts. They too got the college education and used it to their advantage. The idealist goals were forgotten as their paychecks grew and their goals changed. It didn't happen overnight, but it happened. The only one who truly didn't change was Abbie Hoffman, and look what happened to him.

As for Maria Shriver...no argument whatsoever from me on that one.

As for Ford, let's keep politics out of this. There were far worse Presidents than him, political parties be damned.

Speaking of Help Wanted Ads

There were far worse Presidents than him, political parties be damned.
Worse presidents than he.
OK, Harding maybe.
If it weren't for the pardon, Jerry would be right up there with Coolidge.

Back to Help Wanted Ads....
Kevin LaRue has relocated and continues to write great - really creative and interesting - help wanted ads. Each one is different. Here is a sample from his current offering:

Do you remember when radio news was built with a team of dedicated pros who rivaled Hollywood for prestige? When reporters made enough money to take lavish vacations and hire a squad of poolboys to clean their country villas? When owners deferred to the judgment of their newsrooms even when it cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars? When full-service radio stations executed wall-to-wall coverage with a cast of hundreds?

No? Well…neither do we.
The whole thing is on All Access. Too bad there's not an online collection of his ads from Roanoke.
The guy really should be an agency creative director.

I was thinking Fillmore, but I like your suggestions better.

The one in San Francisco or the one in Greenwich Village?

Letter To Feder Gets Chi-Town Jock Canned

EMMIS Classic Rock WLUP (THE LOOP)/CHICAGO has severed ties with weekend/swing jock CARA CARRIVEAU, apparently because of her letter to the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES that appeared in ROBERT FEDER's column of reader mail recently.

Characterizing the letter as "the last straw" in a deteriorating relationship (CARRIVEAU was replaced in middays at THE LOOP last MARCH), VP/GM MARV NYREN told FEDER, "I don't think CARA is a fan of what's happening here. I have no problem with my people talking to you, but I want to have people here who believe in our industry and believe what we're doing is right."

In her letter to the SUN-TIMES, CARRIVEAU said, "It's unbelievable how many CHICAGO radio icons are not currently on the air in this town. It's amazing that we can no longer flip through the dial and hear MANCOW, JOHN LANDECKER, FRED WINSTON, DICK BIONDI, BOBBY SKAFISH, among many others. My heart goes out to those talented personalities, and I am empathetic to the many disappointed listeners. This situation is sad. Very, very sad."

CARRIVEAU is now questioning whether free speech exists in the industry, noting that she "did not speak negatively about any person or company." .... [snip]

Because anything you say can and will be used against you.
Because too many radio people are thin skinned and can't tolerate even a hint of questioning and criticism.
Because too many radio people can dish out but they can't take it.
Because if people use their real names what you get is what people are willing to have their boss read, the industry line and assorted forms of sucking up.
If that's what you want, "mom" might as well turn this site over to the NAB or Clear Channel to run.
And you will get the same kind of candor, independence and objectivity as trade publications and speeches at industry conventions.

This thread has run on so long, I'm out of popcorn! ::)

I looked for you guys last week at the Portable Media Expo.
(You WEREN'T there, right? TELL me you weren't. If you were, and I missed you, I'll shriek.)

That WAS me, applauding in the back of the room, when they announced your nomination for one of those Podcast-of-the-Year awards.

HELLUVA turnout.
2500+ people, for a PODCASTING convention!
My pictures/notes/audio @ http://members.aol.com/cookeh/pme06.html

If I'd have been there, I'd have made a point of alerting you so we could meet up. I sent two of our co-hosts to represent us instead. They told me I should go next year.

Thanks Holland, but that wasn't just a nomination, that would have been our win. 2nd year in a row. ;D This year we beat out George Bush, Barak Obama, and Democracy Now.

I've ALMOST got RSS figured out. :)

You know my email if you still need help. Don't hesitate.

Be there or be square.
MIND-BOGGLING event.

There was an Elvis impersonator...in a chicken suit. And a TV reporter whose crew didn’t seem to notice he wasn’t wearing pants. There were more T-shirts than suits...but more suits than last year.

Enthused, imaginative, quirky people...doing "radio without a transmitter."
Many MAKING MONEY at it.
And no boss!

Stations are now dabbling in podcasting, but most are simply doing online re-runs, archived on-demand stuff. WHICH IS BETTER THAN NOT PODCASTING AT ALL.

I could see the lightbulb snap on when I recently told a station owner, "most of your audience doesn't hear most of your programming."

"Wha?" One of radio’s strengths is one of its weaknesses. We’re live. Even if you WORK AT a radio station, you don’t hear everything that airs. If you did, you’d never sleep.

THANKS to all who replied!

Update: I'm heading out on a two-week consulting trek, and will visit both of the stations described by the opportunity posted at the top of this thread and @ www.AllAccess.com

I'm toting duplicate hard copy files, each containing the material received from every applicant who responded. I'm also pleased to be toting TOOTHPASTE, SHAMPOO, MOUTHWASH AND COLOGNE, and all that other stuff they made us stash in checked luggage for 6 weeks. But I digress.

Please know that your application will be given every consideration. In addition to the individual replies I have already sent to acknowledge each applicant's material, I may be in touch again, for further information, possibly to schedule interviews.

THANKS to all who responded! At both stations I'll be visiting, we've set aside Quality Time to review these submissions. And as I've already told these station managers, I am quite pleased with the response we've gotten. For all the cutbacks radio has suffered in recent years, it's good to hear that there's still a lot of talent out there, raring-to-go. As I told one of these station managers just the other day, the common thread that runs through the material applicants sent is PRIDE in their work.

If we don't end up getting together for these two particular positions, I will certainly keep your material on file for consideration elsewhere, as pertient opportunities arise.

Best wishes,
HC
