Help! What's supposed to be an mp3 is now called a ".23" file!!??

This all started when I was shipped a MOV file to view and use as a template for an infomercial revoicing project (I know I should have just used Pro Tools..) that I opened in AA3 by opening a new session in multitrack and choosing INSERT> VIDEO.
The dam file was called ProSeal.23.wmv (It had a "point" before the 23..then another "point" before the wmv)

Now for some reason when I am in edit mode..even doing another session AA3 will save any file that I want saved as an mp3 as .23

I have tried recording a test file and saving it as test.mp3 and hitting save..but then it saves it as test.mp3.23

JEESH..how do I get rid of this .23 extension? It renders the file useless to anyone that gets it (obviously) and in doing quick stuff like TV news promos I have to be very sure I go back into the drive and RENAME the file from .23 to .mp3 manually!

And now in the window that has all of the file types it lists the cryptic .23 alongside .mp3

MP3Pro (.23,mp3)

WHOEVER named that file in NYC ought to be sent to thier room with the cat.

Sounds like Audition isn't particularly smart about its filenames.

Two things to try:
1) In the "Save" dialogue in Audition, type the correct filename such as "WMAQ package 5-27.mp3" (no quotes). Be sure that the file type dropdown is on MP3 or MP3Pro
2) In good old Windows Explorer, find the file which is improperly named, right click it and choose rename. Give it the proper name "WMAQ package 5-27.mp3" (again, no quotes) and clear any warnings about changing the extension. I guess you already know this, but I'll state it anyway :p

The first should fix Audition to use .mp3 extensions again, and the second should allow you to fix files you've already saved with .23 extensions.

You might also go into the file types in Windows Explorer (Tools - Folder Options - File Types tab) and delete the .23 extension entirely.

How are you liking AA3? I use AA 1.5 and it is quite stable.

I couldn't get AA3 to play nice with my Echo Mia and Lexicon Alpha interface.

Chuck..I LOVE AA3...It should have not been called "Audition" because it has a lot of Pro Tools' elements in it..It's the best of both, and no issues with any soundcards I use (Delta 44 and CardD)

As far as the .23 mystery...I ended up having to rename the files then literally ****** EVERYTHING that had been automatically named with the .23 extension. APPARENTLY..Audition will assign pretty much anything as an extesnion and also add it to the last type of file you successfuly saved..If I saved a file as an .mp3 as the last type of file before all this happened..if I import something with an added decimel point (i.e. .23) it will add that as an extension to the MP3 selection box...

I recorded and saved an .aif file. Then I recorded and imported a file called "test.dick.aif" in the multitrack window..and there it was the next time I opened the save as type of file box. AIFF (.dick; .aif) and sure enough the NEXT file I recorded and attempted to save as an .aif (2nd_test.aif) was saved as "2nd_test.dick"

I guess I need to be SURE that any file I import is renamed if need be without any added decimel point/periods huh?

I've used every incarnation of the program since Cool Edit Pro 1.1. And I can safely say that Audition 3.0 is the best overall release so far! It can be tougher to setup and requires learning how to use ASIO drivers. But once it's running, it's just fantastic. 2.0 had many good ideas that weren't implemented well. 3.0 made those ideas work smoothly, as well as adding in some wonderful workflow enhancements. I've also found that, although it seems to hog more CPU power than 1.5, I actually get higher track-counts with 3.0. I have no real gripes with the functionality of 3.0, and it's as stable as 1.5. For older/slower machines with consumer-grade gear, 1.5 has the edge. But for a modern machine with a professional interface, 3.0 wins every time.

But then of course, there's the 'if it ain't broke' logic. And that's also fair. I don't know how you work, so I can't speak for anyone but myself...But the gain knob feature, EV fade tools and multitrack auto-crossfade function save me a serious amount of time and effort. Now I just get frustrated with 1.5 when I'm required to use it.

Good to know Emmett (and Jeff). I guess I have to figure out the ASIO drivers, etc and configure for my audio card and Alpha interface. I think that was part of it... I couldn't figure that out compared to 1.5

I'll re-install 3.0 and perhaps you gents can assist?

File Extensions

One of the problems you guys are having with file extensions may be remedied more easily if you change one of Windows default settings. Normally, Windows doesn't display the file extensions of "known file types", i.e. files that are associated with a particular program.

If you tell Windows to display all file extensions, you'll be able to resolve issues with file names that have a . where it doesn't really belong. Here's how:

1. Open any folder on your computer.

2. Go to the menu bar and select "Tools", then "Folder Options".

3. When the window opens, click on the "View" tab at the top.

4. Scroll down until you find the checkbox for "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck the box.

Now, you'll be able to see the file extensions for all your files. If you have a file with an incorrect extension, or an incorrect name, you can simply rename it in Windows explorer. Please note that changing the extension DOES NOT change the actual format. If you rename a .wav file to .mp3, you'll end up with an unuseable file. If, however, you rename "Jeff's file.wav.123" to "Jeff's file.wav", you'll have a wav file that will open just fine in any audio editor.

Old DOS dogs know how to change the extension of all the files in a particular directory. I could tell you how, but then I'd have to charge a consulting fee...
